PORT TOWNSEND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING
Port Townsend Library
September 28, 1998
Present: John Sullivan (President), Bill Maxwell, Kate Schumann
Excused: Sarah Muirhead, Chris Johns
Staff: Linnea Patrick (Director), Carol Costello (minutes)
Guests: Ian Keith (City Council)
The meeting was called to order at 5:16 PM. Kate Schumann, new board member was
introduced.
Minutes from the August 24th meeting were approved.
Communications: Linnea received a letter from Mayor Julie McCulloch stating that
Kate Schumann has been appointed to the library board. Kate will be introduced at the
October 5th city council meeting.
Director's Report: Linnea reported that the building renovation fund is right on
schedule. We may not use all of the $150,000 appropriated because we may need less
earthquake work than estimated.
Jeff Phillips from Advanced Mechanical Services found a burned out motor in the ceiling
that was supposed to vent the bathrooms. The ductwork was not attached properly in the
1990 remodel.
In a discussion of the current remodel, the staff is finding that most patrons are very
pleased.
Linnea and Beth have received 18 applications for the vacated Senior Library Associate
position. Many applicants are from out of town and out of state.
Friends: The Friends book sale is scheduled for Saturday, October 3rd, at the community
center.
Foundation: The Foundation met September 16a'- A change of officers and board
members is due in March. The Foundation would like to repeat a similar program to the
one held in May of this year.
Staff: The staff is glad to be settled into the new rearrangement of space.
Committee Reports
Community Relations: The committee needs someone to write a small article about the
Board for the Leader Library Centennial Celebration insert. The board decided that each
member would write a short biographical piece and give them to Carol Costello before
Thursday, October 1s`'
Old Business: Linnea reported that last Tuesday, city department heads were told that
$300,000 would need to be cut from the 1999 budget. Mayor Julie McCulloch is being
very conservative for the 1999 year because of the re- election of council members. The
general feeling is that the cut asked for will be 5 %. Linnea can readily identify
approximately $15,600 of the $24- 27,000 that may need to be eliminated from the library
budget for 1999. Any amount beyond the $15,600 would have to come from the
materials budget.
Bill moved to have Linnea's director's memo to the mayor concerning 1999 budget cuts,
be approved by the board. Unanimous approval.
New Business: Bill moved to have the board's 1998 discretionary money contributed to
the Library's Centennial Celebration. Unanimous approval.
The Library Board members and Linnea will take Orabelle Connally out to lunch to
honor her for her participation on the Library Board.
The meeting was adjourned at 6:25 PM. The next meeting will be October 2& at 5:15
PM.
