PORT TOWNSEND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING Port Townsend Library, Carnegie Room June 22, 1998 Present: Orabelle Connally, Chris Johns, Bill Maxwell, John Sullivan Excused: Sarah Muirhead Staff: Linnea Patrick (director), Carol Cahill The meeting was called to order by John Sullivan at 5:25 pm. Approval of Minutes: Orabelle Connally moved to approve May's minutes. Unanimous approval. Director's Report: The cabinets will probably be removed from the upstairs this week and stored in Linnea's garage. It looks like the new computer table will be built in rather than purchased. Staff has been packing materials and books in preparation for the move; Linnea, Carol Baker and Carol Cahill will decide which of the "old" books should be kept in the library collection. The construction calendar is not yet finalized; Linnea will work with Bob Little. Linnea distributed an update on the amount of money raised outside of the regular library budget. Friends of the Library: Their annual meeting was June 13th. Officers were elected for 2 -year terms: President, Lesa Barnes; Secretaries, Gwen Howard & Jody Glaubman; Treasurer, Marilyn Rose. The book sale that day was well organized and well attended. Foundation: Over 100 people attended the William Dietrich lecture and around 30 the reception following. It was very good and the foundation will probably repeat this program with other authors. Staff report: We purchased a reference desk for $450 (worth $3,500 new) from local vendors who deal in surplus office furniture. Bev Shelton is working on the computer grant. Many children showed up today to sign up for the summer reading program. The library will have an Internet web page as part of the City of Port Townsend's (written by Carol Cahill). Committee Reports: None of the committees have met since the last board meeting. Budget packets are due to the mayor on August 20th. Old Business: Maintenance & renovation projects: see Director's Report. Board member recruitment: Referred to the community relations committee. There will be an ad in the Leader, plus a poster in the library. y r New Business: Centennial celebration: Linnea would like to see involvement from people . outside the library staff: Marion Rideout from the foundation has volunteered. Other suggestions include Julia Owens. September 23 marks the 100th anniversary of the library charter; and October 14 the 85th anniversary of the dedication of the building. It is hoped a celebration can occur between those dates. Planning was referred to the community relations committee. There is money in the Friends Family Programs budget that can be used for this celebration. Chris suggested we may wish to come up with some sort of souvenir, such as a T -shirt that people can purchase. Meeting adjourned to Executive Session at 6:10 PM. 1A J 11
