Port Townsend Library, Carnegie Room
April 27, 1998
Present: John Sullivan, Chris Johns
Excused: Bill Maxwell, Orabelle Connally, Sarah Muirhead
Staff: Linnea Patrick (Director), Carol Costello (minutes)
Three members of the board were excused for this meeting. Those present discussed the
following items:
The meeting began with a discussion of the library's building and renovation projects
scheduled for this year. It has not been determined whether these projects should be set of
projects or one project. On Monday night, May 4th, the city council will take a final vote.
If the city attorney and finance director agree to a set of projects, then Bob Little will sign
a contract as projects manager and Chris Hanson will sign the electrical contract next
week. If it must legally be considered a single project we will have to go to a sealed bid
process.
Linnea and county library director Judy Gunter met with Niki Clark from the museum last
week. The Jefferson County Historical Society Board decided that the museum must
discontinue their membership in CLAN for financial reasons. Linnea explained what this
will mean to CLAN. The museum's circulation account will be terminated, but they will
be able to dial up to CLAN as citizens do now.
The annual report was discussed and will be forwarded to the city council. A copy of the
report will be sent to the Washington State Library.
Those present discussed a set of materials received from the city attorney which includes
discussions of possible conflicts between code city laws and library laws. Sarah has the
packet now and will pass it on to other board members who have not yet read the
materials.
Job descriptions for the library staff have been completed and each board member has
received copies.
As of April 27th, the children's furniture fund has received $17,163 from the community
and $10,000 from the McEachern Charitable Trust. When the donations from the
community reach $20,000, the McEachern Charitable Trust will give another $10,000
toward the project.
The Library Children's Choir and the Port Townsend Youth Choir will be giving a concert
at the library on May 21 st at 7 pm.
