HomeMy WebLinkAbout052499W-A PORT TOWNSEND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING Port Townsend Library May 24, 1999 Present: John Sullivan (President), Bill Maxwell, Sarah Muirhead, Eileen Price, Kate Schumann Staff: Linnea Patrick (Director), Carol Costello (minutes) Guests: Allen Frank (City Council) President John Sullivan called the meeting to order at 5:15 PM. Communication: Linnea received a letter from a patron requesting that a baby changing station be installed in the women's restroom. Linnea will try to find a way to make this possible. Public Comment: Allen appreciates the board members for coming to the city council meetings. He suggested that board members attend finance committee meetings and policy setting meetings as well. He also discussed a tight budget situation for next year and the low sales tax revenues. Linnea responded that she'd prefer to see efforts to increase city revenue rather than cutting the budget below the current levels. Director's Report: Linnea shared charts of library statistics that were made on a special is new computer program that compares libraries in the state. Friends: Kate reported that the Friends have recently received money from the following sources: garage sale, $998; new memberships, $40; book sale in March, $1786; renewed memberships, $225. In October, Herb and Nancy Payson, who write books about sailboat cruising, will be giving a slide presentation at Wheeler Theater at Fort Worden. The proceeds will go to the Friends. The Port Townsend Library and the Wooden Boat Foundation are sponsoring an event at the library in June. Thanks to Admiralty Landscaping who donated many more hours to the library's landscaping than they were paid for. Foundation: The next meeting of the Foundation will be held June 16th The Foundation received $600 in donations from the Port Townsend Orchestra in memory of Bob Polishuk. • Staff: The children's summer reading program will begin June 28th and will last for 9 weeks. The theme this year is a musical one "Rock and Read." The young adult group, Cover to Cover, will meet weekly and will participate in a field trip to Elliot Bay Book Company in Seattle. The vendor is replacing the new wooden tables in the children's area. The trim separated from the tabletops and could not be repaired. The Port Townsend Children's Choir and drumming group "A Beat in Time" had a wonderful concert on May 21st at the Methodist Church. It is time for the quilt display in the children's library to come down. Prints by children's book illustrator Max Grover will be on display throughout the summer. Beth will begin adding library events to the OlympusNet calendar for public Internet access. Committees Budget: Eileen and Sarah attended a city council budget workshop. Building: The new stucco on the library building is just about finished. The painting of the building is scheduled to begin in June. . The building committee received a letter regarding the recent reconfiguration of the library. The Building Development Committee has had their second meeting with a third meeting scheduled for the end of the summer. Linnea reported that the recently hired city manager, David Timmons, has been involved in a library building project in Colchester, Vermont, so he brings expertise in this area. Personnel: The non-represented library staff has received a 2.3% cost of living increase retroactive to January 1, 1999, Community Relations: Linnea handed out copies of the list of city council meetings, showing the dates that each board member volunteered to attend. Old Business: The members discussed the continuing need for a public pay phone at the library. U.S. West will not install a pay phone at the library without a guarantee of at least $3.00 per day from phone calls or a $44 flat rate per month from the library. Bill will investigate private company phones that are in some areas of Port Townsend. Linnea will talk to Randy at the Fire Department to find out how they got their phone. -ter New Business: The Workshop in Library Leadership will be held in Spokane in September. The purpose of the workshop is to train trustees and friends of the library. The state library will be sending packets to each library board member. The next meeting of the library board will be June 28'h. The meeting was adjourned at 6:15 PM.
