Port Townsend Library
August 23, X999
Present: John Sullivan (President), -Jill Maxwell, Eileen Price, Kate Schumann
Excused: Sarah Muirhead
Staff: Linnea Patrick (Director), Carol Costello (minutes)
Guests: Allen Frank (City Council)
The meeting was called to order by President John Sullivan at 5:15 PM.
The minutes from June 28'h were approved.
Communications: Kate has reminded Richard from Admiralty Landscaping that he
needs to give the library the total number of dollars donated by his company toward the
recent landscaping of the library.
Director's Report: The leather sofa and two chairs that have been in need of repair have
been picked up and are being reupholstered. When the furniture is finished the sofa and
one of the chairs will be placed in the children's area. The money from last year's
children's grant and gift fund is financing the project.
The Friends of the Library have been receptive to providing part of the money for
uniform- height, bolted -to- the -floor shelving which is needed upstairs in the library.
Safety is a concern in this area of the library with large art books shelved above patrons'
heads and old shelving that doesn't bolt down.
The editor of the Friends newsletter is accepting articles for the next issue. Kate will
write a letter of thanks to the Friends for all of their hard work.
Foundation: The next meeting of the Library Foundation will be held September 18th
at 8 AM. There is almost $3000 in the Polishuk music account.
Staff: There were about 13.0 adults and children at the end of the summer reading club
picnic. Sixteen youth read 25 books each and twenty -six youth read over 30 books.
About 30 people participated in the library's entry in last Saturday's Uptown Parade.
These people were dressed as their favorite book character. In September, the children's
staff will begin its weekly read -aloud each Tuesday evening. They will read the third
book in the popular Harry Potter series.
Budget: The library board budget committee met last week on the same day that Linnea
received the city budget manual for 2000. Linnea is asking for city funds toward uniform
shelving for the upstairs adult book collection and for two new staff computers, as well as
restoration of the materials budget which had severe cuts this year. The budget proposal
must be completed by September 1 ".
