HomeMy WebLinkAbout022800Port Townsend Public Library Board Meeting Port Townsend Library February 28, 2000 Present: Bi 1 Maxwell (President), Eileen Price, Kate Schumann Excused: J hn Sullivan, Sarah Muirhead Staff: Linnea Patrick (Director), Beth deJarnette (minutes) Friends of the Library: Isabelle Manley President Bill Maxwell called the meeting to order at 5:18 p.m. The minutes from the January 24, 2000 meeting, were approved. Communications: Linnea met with a patron who had brought in an advertisement for Bess Internet filtering software expressing concern about our non - filtered Internet access. Kate sugges�ed a forum about filtering/controlling Internet versus free speech. The Board agret1king to take both suggestions into consideration. Linnea stated that all public libraries are about Internet policies and patron responsibilities. Kate mentioned that a patron' asked if staff would wear nametags so that patrons could thank them for their hard work. A card to be sent to Judy Gunter, Jefferson County Library Director for • her retiremept was signed by board members. Public Co ent: Isobelle Manley, Friends of Library board representative, reported on the March edition of the Friends Newsletter, and announced the Friends book sale March 4"' and the book signing for the book "Life Is So Good" by local author Richard Glaubman. �he book signing will take place during the book sale. Kate Schumann donated a us' d refrigerator to the library staff area Director's Report: In addition to the director's written report, Linnea summarized her recent meeting with the City Manager and will work on incorporating his ideas into a long term cod lection development/maintenance proposal. Foundations See attached report: " Proposed Uses of Library Foundation 1999 Endowments Income ". Bob Polishuck musical evening is April 151" at the Unitarian Church. Thy hall seats 135. The Foundation is looking for better paying investments for large amounts of dollars. Music CD's may be donated to the library and then passed on to the Friends if the library staff decides does not add them to the library music collection. Staff: Beth deJamette, Youth Services Manager, presented the Children's Library Annual repo (see attached report). 1999 children's library programs totaled 366 with 9,010 library contacts. Committee reports: No committee reports. The library board suggested that part of the March library board meeting be used to work on revising the library by -laws. - New Business: Linnea is working on a collection maintenance request that would show need rather han requests fulfilled. There is an increase in reference requests, circulation and cardhol ers. George Smith, Deputy Director of the Alaska State Library, has been asked to su mit a proposal for a study of the feasibility of consolidating Port Townsend Public Library and the Jefferson County Rural Library District. Mr. Smith is an expert in library consolidation issues. There is a possibility that the Baptist Church, located next door to the library, might be available for use by the library for storage, library programming and meeting place.
