PORT TOWNSEND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING
Port Townsend Library
December b 2001
Present: Bill Maxwell, Sarah Muirhead, Kate Schumann, Larry Thomas, Eileen Price
Staff: Linnea Patrick (Director), Carol Costello (minutes)
Guests: Karen Long (Friends)
The meeting was called to order by President Bill Maxwell at 9 AM. The minutes were approved as read.
Communications: Bill received a letter from patron Jim Todd regarding the level of noise on the second
floor of the library. Bill will write a response to Jim. It was suggested that a "quiet zone" sign should be
posted near the entrance of the second floor.
Director's Report: Linnea told the board that the library staff would receive a 1.7% cost of living
increase in 2002. Those staff members that did not receive a step increase in 2001 because of the salary
freeze will go up two steps in 2002. A group life and disability insurance benefit for the city non -
represented staff has been in effect since October 15`.
The board discussed the final 2002 budget.
Friends: Karen reported that the Nan Toby Tyrrell concert that benefited the library's compact disc
collection raised $253. The Friends have joined Washington Library Association. The next book sale
will be in February 2002.
Foundation: No report
Staff: Carol told the board about "Midwinter Cheer at Port Townsend Public Library." Tuesday
December 18`h from 3:30 — 5 PM, participants will make decorations for the library tree. The last concert
for the Library Children's Choir will be held at the First Baptist Church at 7:30 PM on December 19`h.
Refreshments, stories and singing will follow at the library.
Six members of the library staff attended the three -day workshop "Effective Reference Performance" in
October and November.
Old Business: Approximately $15,000 of the Book Boost money has been spent so far.
The new 2002 open hours for the library are as follows:
Monday —Thursday 10:30 AM — 8 PM
Friday — Saturday 10:30 AM -- 6 PM
New Business: Larry mentioned the Code of Ethics that the city council recently passed. He wondered
when he would be able to see a copy. Linnea will disperse copies to the board members when she
receives them.
Linnea will ask David Timmons about whom the board liaison will be now that there are several new
members on the city council.
The next meeting will be January 24'h at 9 AM. The meeting was adjourned at 10:40 AM.
