Port Townsend Library
August 23, 2001
Present: Bill Maxwell, Sarah Muirhead, Kate Schumann, Larry Thomas, Eileen Price

Guests: Karen Long (Friends), Julie Owens; Freida Fenn
The meeting was called to order by President Bill Maxwell at 9:15 AM. The minutes from the July 25t" meeting
were approved as read.
Director's Report: There was no formal director's report this month. Linnea reported on her recent initial budget
meeting with City Manager David Timmons. David wants Linnea to prepare a budget that would reflect the
following:
• Restore open hours which would mean additional staff hours
• Restore the book budget to the amount of this year's initial materials budget plus $10,000 from the city's
contribution to this year's Book Boost
The board discussed the draft memo written to David Timmons regarding sustainable funding for library services.
Larry moved that the board adopt and send the memo to David Timmons. Unanimous approval. Bill will deliver
the memo to David on Tuesday.
After a discussion of the board's meeting with Jefferson County Rural Library District consultant Ralph
Delamarter, Kate mentioned that she particularly liked the idea of annexation as a "marriage" between the two
excellent libraries. Linnea said that the bottom line is that annexation can result in better and more equitable
40 service to everyone in Jefferson County.
Bill has sent a fax to the mill requesting the $1000 that was pledged for the Book Boost be sent to the library.
Children's librarians from Port Townsend Library and Port Townsend School District will be present at the
September 4th meeting of the city council when September will be proclaimed Library Card Signup Month in Port
Townsend. The group's goal is to issue library cards to every kindergarten, sixth grade and ninth grade student.
The library board will also be present at that meeting to present the Book Boost check to the city.
Friends of the Library: Kate reported on the Friends booth at the Jefferson County Fair. The net gain for the
Friends was $228. They sold book bags and books, registered new members, sold quilt blocks and raised $245
for the Book Boost. According to Friends President Karen McKenna it was a success!!
Foundation: The next meeting will be September 29th to approve the document that changes the Foundation
Board meeting frequency to one time per year. The executive committee of the foundation will meet as often as
there is business to discuss.
Staff: Carol explained how the Port Townsend library staff is helping out patrons during the Jefferson County
Library's closure. JCL reserve books are being held for patrons at PTL. Our staff is making the calls to notify
JCL patrons that their books are here.
The grant for digitizing the Port Townsend Leader will end August 31St. Carol Cahill had enough money left to
order Leader microfilm and CDs through 1920. Volunteers and staff members will continue to index the issues as
time permits.

27th at 9:00 AM.
