HomeMy WebLinkAbout062801. s PORT TOWNSEND LIBRARY BOARD MEETING •Port Townsend Library -- June 2$, 2001 Present: President Bill Maxwell, Sarah Muirhead, Larry Thomas, Eileen Price Absent: Kate Schumann Staff: Linnea Patrick (Director), Carol Costello (minutes) Guests: Karen McKenna (Friends) President Bill Maxwell called the meeting to order at 9:10 AM. The minutes from May 240' were approved as read. Communications: Bill received a letter from Bank of America, which denied the "Book Boost" request based upon a shortage of funds for community projects. Director's Report: The library has received its new microfilm reader printer. The Friends of the Library paid half of the cost and the city administration paid the other half. City manager, Dave Timmons, Jefferson County Rural Library District Director, Bill Mitchell, and Linnea will meet within two weeks to further discuss the possibility of annexation to the county library. The children's department received a $3000 LSTA grant from the State Library. The grant provides for board books for children, picture books, parenting books, and children's books written in Spanish. Staff: Linnea shared the "Take to the Road" bibliography brochure that she recently completed. Carol Cahill is in Denver, Colorado, at a digital imaging workshop. The Washington State Library paid for her to attend the workshop. Carol Costello has begun working on the digital imaging grant with Carol Cahill by beginning to index the early years of the Leader that are now on CD ROM. The children's summer reading program is in full swing. More than 120 people turned out for the two puppet shows that were held last week. About 25 teenagers showed up for the Cover to Cover book discussion group. No numbers were available for the other programs. Friends of the Library: Karen reported that the Friends raised $1400 to $1500 at their last book sale. An additional $300 in membership fees was raised. The current newsletter can be found on the library's website. The Friends will have an informational booth at the Jefferson County Fair this year. Book bags and membership applications will also be sold. Tonight is the annual meeting along with the library volunteer recognition event. Foundation: Larry reported that the Foundation has decided to meet once a year. A small group of people is writing an operations model. Old Business: The Book Boost contains approximately $6900. This does not include the money promised from the Port Townsend Paper Mill and the money from Laura Popenoe's art sale. Each board member received a copy of the Washington State Library planning draft "Designing Our Future, 2002- 2007." Washington is one of three states that do not receive revenue from state taxes. • 4 Work Session: The board continued its work on "Tax Alternatives for Future Funding." They completed • "Contract for library services with a library district" and "Options for cooperative ventures with the county library short of annexation or contracting for services." New Business: The next regular meeting of the board is scheduled for Wednesday, June 25`''. The meeting was adjourned at 10:40 AM. • •
