Port Townsend Library
April 26, 2001
Present: President Bill Maxwell, Sarah Muirhead, Kate Schumann, Eileen Price,
Larry Thomas
Staff: Beth deJarnette
Guests: Karen Long (friends)
The meeting started at 9:10 a.m.
This month's meeting was less formal than usual, with no printed agenda. Most of the
discussion centered on the Book Boost effort.
* Book Boost poster: Beth described the poster that library employee Jean Tarascio
will make for display in the library: a librarian balancing a stack of books in her
hands. Each book added to the stack will represent $500 toward our goal. Bill and
Linnea will craft a concise description of the fundraiser, which will be copied and
placed near the poster so that patrons can take the information home.
* Bill has talked again with Bob Giesler of Safeway, who recommends that we set up a
table there on a Friday early in the month: Friday because more locals shop then
than on the weekend; early in the month because folks will have just received their
paychecks. Bill suggested we set it up on June 1. By doing so, we can also display a
sign advertising the June 2 maritime book sale downtown. lie will firm up details
before our May meeting and we can sign up for "shifts" at that time.
* Kate announced that Laura Popenoe already sold one of her art pieces that was
destined for her exhibit. It sold for $1,200, so $600 is committed to the library (less
whatever Laura uses to provide wine for the opening). The board discussed what else
was needed for the art opening on Saturday, May 5, and board members who will be
present at that event volunteered to contribute refreshments. Kate: veggie plate;
Eileen: baby quiches; Larry: cheese and crackers; Sarah: cookies and chips.
On other matters:
* Bill attended the foundation meeting and reported that much of the investment
return of the last few years was lost in the market downturn.
* Bill said that City Manager David Timmons told him he hoped to get together with
the board to work together on some issues. Timmons said he would like the board to
explore budgetary support through: 1) annexation to the county library, which is out
of our hands for now and not an immediate solution; 2) levy lid lift; 3) levy lid lift
combined with council support. Timmons also said he would likes to share in the
hp=W8- job performance evaluation of Linnea. W64' -
* Eileen reminded the group that the Library Children's Choir performs Tuesday
night at the Baptist Church next to the library.
• Meeting adjourned at 10:15 a.m.
