President Bill Maxwell called the meeting to order at 5:26 PM. The minutes were approved as
read.
Communications: Linnea read a copy of a letter that City Manager David Timmons sent to
Jefferson County Library and Kitsap County Library, regarding library annexation.
The board received a letter from Friends President, Lesa Barnes, regarding the "Once in a
Lifetime Book Boost." The Friends cannot give money, but are willing to help in other ways.
Linnea received two complaints recently. The first person complained about body odors in the
library. The second person was bothered by the beep at the circulation desk.
A patron asked Kate about the "real" cost of library books. The board thought that the answer to
this could be published in the Friends newsletter or could be part of the "Once in a Lifetime
Book Boost" promotion.
Sarah had a conversation with city council member Allen Frank. Allen told her that the
possibility of the council match for the "Once in a Lifetime Book Boost" looked good.
Bill said that Jack Westerman, county assessor, would be glad to come to a library board meeting
to explain the tax process for possible annexation with the county library.
Director's Report: Linnea held the first morning book discussion group on January 7tn, seven
people attended and two more have shown interest. The evening discussion group will begin
February 1st
Linnea has received mostly good comments on the new library hours.
Dahti Blanchard has resigned effective February 28th. Her position is being advertised in the
Peninsula Daily News, the Port Townsend Leader, and in several other newspapers. The library
children's choir will continue under Dahti's direction funded with money from the sale of the
children's CDs. The library has hired Mical Blanchard - Wright and Ruby Baylor as pages. Page
Joe Michaels will be leaving January 25th
Linnea will attend the Library Directors Meeting on January 25th and 26th
0 Over fifty people attended the Words on the Waterfront program held January 20th.
Friends of the Library: no report
Foundation: no report
Staff: Carol told about the recent Home school program. The theme was Colonial America.
Dahti served breakfast cooked in the fireplace upstairs. Afterward the children made their own
quill pens and wrote in journals. Over 30 home schoolers attended.
No committee reports.
Old Business: The board will meet with the Jefferson County Rural Library District board on
Wednesday, February 14th. The theme for the meeting is cooperation. Topics that the board
would like to discuss relate to annexation.
Bill reported that the City Council match for the "Once in a Lifetime Book Boost" has been
referred to the City Council Finance Committee.
New Business: The meeting date for the board has been changed to the fourth Thursday of the
month at 9 AM. The next meeting will be February 22 °d
County Assessor Jack Westerman will be invited to speak at the next board meeting.
