Port "Townsend Library March 27, 2003 Present: Co- Presidents Kate Schumann and Eileen Price, Larry Thomas, Deb Carroll, Bill Maxwell Staff: Linnea Patrick (director), Carol Costello (minutes) Guests: Peter Hiatt (Foundation); Julia Owens President Eileen Price called the meeting to order at 9:03 AM. The minutes from February 27, 2003 were approved as read. Communications: Kathie Meyer, a reporter from the Vigilance newspaper, may attend today's meeting. Director's Report: Linnea has been invited to speak at the Bill of Rights Defense Committee of Port Townsend and Jefferson County, which will meet April 27". She will be discussing the library's role in the Patriot Act. Linnea handed out copies of the recent report that she prepared on the library's statistical differences between 1994 and 2002. Friends: Linnea told the board about the recent death of Friends co- president Marilyn Rose. Marilyn was a past treasurer of the Friends as well. The Friends raised $1800 at their last book sale. The next book sale will be May 31st. Foundation: Kate attended the last meeting of the Foundation, as Larry was not able to attend. She discussed the director search with them, particularly the website, advertisement, and essay questions. This is Beverly Shelton's last year as treasurer. Peter mentioned the recent Foundation accomplishments. Newest members are Leslie Cox, Carolyn Latteier, and Carmen Matthews. The Foundation released $200 from the Bob Polishuk endowment for the library to spend on compact discs. Fifty dollars can be spent on gardening books from the Bernice Johanson endowment. Staff: Carol told the board about the newest member of the library staff. Amber Faulkner has been hired to work two hours a day to cover books. The library has a new color printer for the staff to use. There are several new volunteers who are working at the check -in desk. Old Business: Larry told the group that the ad for the new library director is scheduled to be in several of the major library magazines in April. Larry reported on the recent work that the search committee has been doing. A discussion of library policies will be postponed until the next meeting of the advisory board. Linnea proposed that a sign should be posted at the library near the computers, and on the website regarding the library's policy on the Patriot Act after the board formulates a Port Townsend Library policy. Linnea asked the board to read the current library policies in preparation for the next meeting. New Business: At the last CLAN board meeting Linnea mentioned that a possible alternative to CLAN's current consortium framework could be one in which the Jefferson County Library would own the automated system with Port Townsend Library, Quilcene School Library, and Brinnon School Library contracting with them for the connection. Jefferson County Library Director Ray Serebrin is compiling a list of pros and cons to present at the next CLAN board meeting. Linnea mentioned that the board might participate in the PTTV Our Town show. It is taped live on Tuesdays. Deb and Eileen are unavailable at that time. Perhaps the show could be taped ahead of time. Linnea will check on that. Bill Maxwell will be out of town for the next board meeting. The next meeting will be Thursday, April 24"' at 9:00 AM. The meeting was adjourned at 10:28 AM.
