Held at The Pink House, Port Townsend, on August 19, 2004
Board Members Present: Co- chairs Eileen Price and Kate Schumann, Deborah Carroll,
and Larry Thomas.
Excused: Bill Maxwell
Staff Present: Theresa Percy, Library Director
Guests: Julia Owens, Ray Nelson, and Jody Glaubman of the Friends of the Library.
The meeting was called to order at 9:05 AM.
It was MSC to approve the minutes of the Library Advisory Board meeting held July 8,
2004, with the correction of the meeting ending time to 9:20 AM.
Public Comment and Communications
• A letter was received from Robert Ready regarding the library conference. Mr. Ready
gave his reflections and critique of the visioning conference process. The letter will be
entered into the minutes.
The Board and the Long -Range Planning Committee all received a communication from
Jim Todd regarding the use of library space. Mr. Todd did an informal survey and gave
recommendations based on his data. The Library Director indicated that Mr. Todd's input
would be added to the mix of all ideas about library space when the staff holds its internal
space usage meeting. Mr. Todd's letter and survey will be entered into the minutes.
Kate Schumann and Eileen Price, as co- chairs of the Board, will write a letter of
acknowledgement to both Mr. Ready and Mr. Todd.
Kate Schumann reported that she heard Theresa Percy, the Library Director, speak at the
Chamber of Commerce about the long -range planning committee survey. Kate said that
she did a good job and it is important to have a library presence at the Chamber.
Friends of the Library Report
Jody Glaubman reported that the Friends have joined the National Friends of the Library
Organization. She said that the Friends are "tired" and that fundraising has become stale.
They are hoping that membership in the National organization will revitalize them with
new ideas.
The Friends will have a booth at the Uptown Street Fair on August 21't.
Booksales will continue, but the Friends are looking at doing one B1G fundraiser per
year.
Library volunteers manned a County Fair Booth and earned $500 for the library.

contribution to Jody by September 1 ".
Kate Schumann reported that the Pet Pals library program begins at the end of this month.
Kate will write an introduction of the program for the Friends newsletter. Kate is
gathering a core group of volunteers for the program.
Library Foundation Report
No report.
Directors Report
Theresa Percy reported that fines for late videos will not begin until it is approved by the
City Council. Hopefully this will happen on September 8th. She would like to see the
fines extended to all late library materials in the future. Eileen Price will attend the
council meeting with Theresa.
The statistical report was received for July 2004. The June statistical report will be sent to
the Board.
Karen Moore, wife of the former Secretary of State, invited Theresa to attend a
September 1" appreciation reception for Norm Dicks.
The Fire Chief reception is Monday, August 23rd at 6:30 PM. Panel boards will be on
display in the library lobby with the new firehouse colors and information about the new
fire station.
The staff will hold a space usage meeting on October 16`h, 8 am to noon, at the library.
Hope , the new library director at the Munson Library, will attend as the space
consultant. Hope is a facilities planner and is consulting with PTPL for free. The Friends
are paying for her airfare. The Board is invited to the session and packets will be
prepared.
Theresa attended the Washington Library Association meeting with County Library Staff
. with whom she is building rapport. The city and county library staffs are talking about
planning an annual co- sponsored event.
• There was a discussion of the storage unit situation, which Theresa is rethinking.
The Lewis & Clark dinner scheduled for October has been postponed.
"The Year of Living Dangerously" is the film the Friends will sponsor at this year's PT
Film Fest and Theresa is trying to get a movie reviewer from Seattle to come speak
before the film.
Long -Range Planning Report
The next LRP meeting is scheduled for September 14th or 15th, 2004. It is important to
have good representation of all LRP members, as this is the meeting when the Visioning
Conference and survey data will be synthesized and prioritized with library goals.
The next PT Library Advisory Board meeting will be Thursday, September 9, 2004
at 9:00 AM, at The Pink House, PT.
The meeting was adjourned at 11:00 AM.
