The minutes of the February meeting were approved.
Communications: Eileen shared a comment from a patron suggesting that the upcoming
basketball game between the Lower Elwa girls' team and that of Port Townsend High
School is racist. (The game is part of the "Counting Coup" Community Read.) Julie
received a communication regarding the number of books that are disposed of after the
Friends' book sales. She will respond and explain that, due to very limited storage space,
the leftover books have to be recycled.
Director's Report: The Community Read will definitely become an annual event and
Theresa reported that more than the usual number of library cards have recently been
issued and she attributes it to the interest generated by the Community Read. Bulletin
Board Policy — Board members were given a draft of the policy. The date posted will be
stamped on anything posted and a staff person is already checking the board contents 5
days a week.
This Saturday is the Annual Meeting of the Port Townsend Library Foundation. In
addition to introducing their 6 new members, the Board will elect officers, review their
mission statement, look into the workings of the Community Foundation and basically
figure out how they will operate. Theresa will present a report to the Foundation of how
the Port Townsend Library operates, future library trends, the relationship the PTPL has
with city of Port Townsend, and an organization chart — which she will also share with
the Advisory Board. In giving a baseline of bow the library operates she will highlight
that the library budget is a special revenue fund and is no longer in the city's general
fund. She will list what each staff member does, list its many no -fee programs, collection
management (repair, processing), community outreach, volunteers, reader's guides,
reference, grant writing and strategic planning.
Friends' Report: Last week's book sale brought in $2668 with $225 in new
memberships. There will be a welcome Jody party in the library on Friday, March 17,
from 4 -6 p.m. The Friends' annual meeting /volunteer awards /election of officers will
take place on Friday, June 2. Barb Dyer is running the library landscaping project and is
always looking for volunteers to help. There is a new editor for the newsletter and there
was some discussion about changing the membership dues from $5 per year to $7.50 for
1 '/2 years and charging $15 for family memberships. Theresa thanked the Friends for
their numerous donations towards the Community Read and the new computers.
Foundation Report: Their meeting is Saturday and Bill Maxwell, as representative of
the Advisory Board, will read a statement from the Advisory Board thanking the
Foundation for their work. Foundation Board member Michael Thompson has left the
Board for one year for personal reasons. Larry is still anxious to see the Memo of
Understanding between the Foundation and the City of port Townsend. Theresa will
provide us with a copy.
Old Business: The joint meeting of Theresa, the Friends, the Foundation and the
Advisory Board will probably take place in May.
New Business: Jody Glaubman is an official member of the fort Townsend Library staff.
Bill Maxwell is the new chairman of the Advisory Board. We have two possible
candidates for the open slot.
