Minutes of the Port Townsend Library Advisory Board - May 18, 2006
At the Pink House 9:00 a.m.
Members present: Bill Maxwell, Kate Schumann, Eileen Price, and Julie Owens.
Staff present: Theresa Percy, Library Director.
The next meeting will be held on Thursday, June 15, at 9:00 a.m. at the Pink House.
Communications: Marge Samuelson of the Historical Society remarked to Julie that the library
was so crowded and lively compared with the last time she had visited several years ago. Kate
complimented Theresa on the new arrangements upstairs and in the Children's Room.
Director's Report: Theresa's written report as well as the others will be in our mail boxes later.
Theresa is sorting and reorganizing her office with the help of Carol Costello preparing for the
upcoming building project.
After a bit of a slump, circulation is now even with last year.
Samples of the new bags for the Books on Wheels program were shown as was the new billed
cap with the library logo. Kate had samples of the new book mark for the Read to Rover program
which, like the bag, has art work by Max Grover.
Theresa went to the Washington Library Association meeting and attended, with Mary Martin
from the Foundation, a workshop on fund raising called "Digging for Gold ".
The new city web site design should be up in June. The library will hire someone to redesign
our site which will be a link from the city.
A possible program on Astrology is in the works and perhaps this will also be a theme for the
staff development program in January as it provides a framework for discussing personality types
and how they react and interact. Staff attitudes and interactions are definitely improving.
Theresa will be having an evaluation from Dave.
Fall programs will include one with a cooking theme. The Scribe to Screen program may be
folded into the Community Read. We are working toward more cooperative programming with
the County Library, developing programs that will be presented in both venues. Summer program
will be a statewide one themed Paws, Claws, Scales, and Tales.
Old Business: An attempt to find out what percent of circulation goes out on "green cards" (CLAN
cards issued at the County Library) gave results that were suspicious so other approaches are
being tried.
Our Rhody Parade entry is coming together, There will be an electric car with a bubble machine
and a blue grass band. Other ideas being discussed are a decorated book cart in front of the
banner or some. method of including recognized friends and volunteers in the entry.
The three finalists in the architect competition are Cardwell, Thomas & Associates, Buffalo
Design, and Tonkin......., who did the historic section of the previous addition.
The Books on Wheels project has two volunteers in place, but waiting for background checks.
This week they will advertise for people who want to sign up for the service. After a shakedown
cruise or two the program may be enhanced with some program elements such as book talks
when the volunteer goes to a multiple user location like an assisted - living facility. Later Teresa
will be looking for a grant to further enhance the program with additional collections of large print
and audio books and maybe even a van or electric car with the logo. Bill asked for a workshop or
program on how the service works for hospice volunteers. Theresa will see he gets a call to set
this up.
New Business: Some problems with the catalogs were discussed and Theresa will look into
them: new additions lists are not yet available on Horizon; outstanding reserves should be on the
availability screen; directions for users on how to initialize the catalog need to be posted over the
laptops. Frequently they are blank and users, particularly those who are uneasy with strange
computers, don't know how to get started, even when they really want to.
Eileen will be absent in June.
There being no further business, meeting was adjourned
