Members present: Bill Maxwell, Julie Owens , Mark Decker, Kate
Schumann,
Absent: Eileen Price
Staff present: Theresa Percy
Introduction of new board member Mark Decker
Minutes of last meeting: Approved.
Communications:
Kate mentioned that she has gotten a couple of comments that people
are pleased that the staff is wearing their name tags, but they would
still like to have those people who answer the phone identify
themselves.
Public Comments: Julie mentioned that "reserves" now show up in the
card catalogue under "book info." She also mentioned that
notifications for new items will automatically be available online.
[is this correct Julie ?)
Director's Report:
Carol Louise needs to send her intentions to Theresa by July 1
Staffing: vacation time, sack pay and longevity of service has been
recalculated to be in line with other city department policies.
PDN article mentioning a $250,000 budget cut caused concern, however
Dave Timmons was using the Library and the amount of money merely as
an example. Timmons has suggested that the Library formerly in the
general fund, now be a stand -alone fund. This would allow__a...separate
levy to handle the level of services budget.
Theresa stated we need to be clear about our message and needs and
she will invite Timmons to come to one of our next meetings to
explain the Library's funding.
Assessment Study: Three architectural candidates will be meeting with
the building committee to present their ideas for the new building
project.
Community Read: The book, "The unfinished Life" by Mark Spragg has
been chosen for 107. Robert Reedy calls Spragg the "next Wallace
Stegner." The movie of the book will be shown in March as a co-
sponsored event with the PTFF_ PT Shorts may be asked to do a
reading from some of Spragg's books. Grants may be possible from a
humanities group.
Rienstra's new building: Concern was raised at its size (which we can
do nothing about as it is perfectly legal - -no height restrictions)
and the lack of parking space available that could be a problem for
he Library.
Miscellaneous: Grand total of circulation is up this year
Grant money is available next year for new signage
Jody got a state grant (actually Federal money that gets funneled to
1
w
states) from the Institute for Museums and Library Services for
things such as marketing.
Old Business: Books on Wheels Home Delivery Service is now
*inctional. Info is available from social workers when people sign up
-or Home Health and Hospice. Service for the Aging will also
distribute info re the program.
New Business: Mark introduced the Blue Heron Middle School "One Book,
One Community" read program through the reading of "The wanderer" by
Sharon Creech. Adults as well as children are encouraged to participate.
