Minutes of last meeting approved as mailed.
Communications: Feedback on excellent reference service from library staff; going the extra mile.
Public comment: Brenda McMillan explained that she had trouble getting onto reservable public computers in a
timely fashion. Noting that she could call ahead and reserve computer time at the county library, and that she had
been told that the reason PTPL did not was that we had only one phone line, she requested a second phone line
for making such reservations. Theresa told her that changes to the system are being looked at and that the
county is considering using the same system as the city.
Special Report - Youth Services: Jodie Glaubman reported on ongoing efforts to engage our younger users. At
one end, baby programs are popular. Teen field trips took kids to Seattle Public Library for a music performance
as well as other stops in the city, and on a hike up the lower Big Quilcene river to read and write poetry. They are
developing a relationship with Steve Wilmart at Quimper Sound for advice in which local bands to acquire. The
library had a presence at the Blue Heron Back -to- School night. They are working on a special teen website with
links to homework helps.
Director's Report:: At the Monday council meeting the contract with architects for the library project was
approved. Theresa and Mary Martin of the foundation will be the project managers. The grant from Humanities
Washington was received for this year's community read. This fall we must submit for the 2008 program. We
are looking for a East -West (U. S.) theme. A peninsula library directors meeting is being planned. On the agenda
will be evaluating online databases and looking for cooperative ways to promote them. Theresa is meeting with
Dave Timmons later this week about staffing patterns including the hiring of a new librarian to fill the open
position. Budget scenarios are being presented by Finance to allow for personnel changes. Next year in
September is library-card- sign -up month. Special incentives are being planned. Coming programs include an
apple pie demonstration and contest where Greg Atkinson, food guy for the Seattle Times will talk. Programs in
cooperation with the county this year will be on needlework.
Foundation: The meeting with the Foundation board has been moved to September 23, time and place to be
announced. The Foundation is eager to begin fund raising.
