Gentlemen: ¡;hen we were informed on Tuesday morn:Lng, Oct. 3, 1967, -chat out of' the 30 f'ull time em;-loyees, we, the undersigned, Hel"e the only f'our who did not receive a ramse, we v¡ere stunned .;,llY 'W;ere vve sine;led out'f.ie decided to investigate and see :If we could come up with some rutiona1 reason for the Council's ãe~isfuon. Out firs t concern was for ourselves. -,Jere we doing our jobs satisfactorily? It is hard to judge oneself' so vIe took a long hard look at each other's ability. Each of' us, looking at the other t~l.ree, could only see hard working loyal employees, who for years have bGen getting the job done with smooth eff'iciency. Our supervisors assured us they were satisf'ied with our Ylork and had so indicatGd by asking :Lor a raise i"or us in the prelLninary budget. Our see ond c onsidera tion \'Jas ¡vhe tl1.or the ci ty hod enou:.;h money to grant us the raise s. .ie all have access to information concerning tho city's income end balances and we assure yo-u., :.?;ent1emen, the requested raises taken from either the 'iiatGr or Current ExDense fund vvould not be detrimental to the best interests of' the City. Thirdly, we thought lJerhaps the Council hètd nade a survey of comparable positions in the eity and elsewhere. This little inves tieaticm left us feeling slie;h tly fuxious. "[Ie found that the C' city of Port Townsend was paying thGir off'ice crGW much less then any of' the f'ollowing: ?ort '-,'orden Trea tr1ent Center, The School Dis tric ts, The Co1J.rthous e, Crorm ?el1orbach, and c i tie s in the State State of Washington in the same Dopu1ation bracket. This seerL1S to be an odd ti:".1e for th'5 Counc il to deny the ','later Clerks a raise. Their wor]"load and res~onsibility will be considerably incl". sed due to the i~crease of sewa~e services and the merger of the Water ètnd Sewer Departments. Actually, we are being asked to do more vfOrk for less ~oney since the rising cost of living results in a decrease i" pay if' salaries remain s ta tionary. ¡¡ It 8 I I 8 I 8 I I 8 8 I I 8 I 8 I I 8 .' ^ 99 MINUTES OF THE REGULAR SESSION OF OCTOBER 17 , 1967 C ON~:nnJED Therefore, Gentlemen, we are reQuesting that you reconsider your decision and take the necessar~ legal action to grant us a raise i1;1 wages 'Tor °1968.
