Bishop Port Townsend, to.;;wit: Mr Dennis Sullivan, Mayor Members of the City Council City Hall Port Townsend, Washington I De ar Sirs: This letter is to ask that the street on Hastings Ave., in front of blocks nine and block 10 Johnsons Addition be vacated, and that the humane society shelter be moved fronl in front of block 10. The shelter being there has hindered the selling of that property. Thank you for your attention to this request. Yours truly, P~s Bernice B. Bishop , A ttorney Abraham said that Mrs Bishop had came to the office after s~e had written the letter', he said that he informed her that the city had nothing to do with the humane society and even if the city wanted to move the shelter that we had no autl:ority to do so. The Historical Society requests your permission to use the City Council Chambers on the evening of Monday, June 13th, for one of its regular meetings. Because two interesting and worthwile speakers, W.J. Daly and Gael R. Stuart, will speak at the meeting of historical matters a large attendance is anticipated. Moti::>n carried. Ord. No. 1495 was again read ~or the third time by title on~y and it was moved by Councilman Siebenbaum seconded by Councilman Ruby that the ordinance do now pass. Motion carried. I NEW & OLD BUSINESS Councilman Hoglund asked the City Attorney if he had prepared the ordinances that he was asked to prepare by the finance committee. Att~~~ Abraham said tnat the ordinances were not prepared bwb wo1llÙd be next week and t.èlat a copy would be given to each member so they could look them over. Councilman Hoglund said that as soon as they received the copies he would like to call a meeting on the 28th of June at the fire hall. mr May, president of the chamber of commerce spoke before the council and quoted figures he had received from the state tax commission. He pointe out thö.t under the proposed B&O tax some 260 businesses would bear the burden of the revenue needed by tne cftty, he stated tffi t most busineesmen had no objection to a business license and proposed that the council reconsider the possibility of raising water rates and increasing private utility franchises aJong with a business license to raise the necessary revenue needed.. Mr Stan Kowalowski spoke against any added taxes to the business men. Mr Wes Johnson said that a business tax wDuld be discriminatory, that it would a ly involve a saml1 perèentage of people who operated businesses and felt that ev,ryone in the city should be involved. Councilman Hoglund explained that wile the council was talking in terms of a tax patterned after the state B&O but no definite rate of taxation had yet been decided upon. Council:nan Siebenbaum said that businessmen might è:tssist by helpirg to get Initiative 226 on the general election ballot. ~ayor Sullivan, asked patrole 'an Dick Kimball to report on the police school he Patrolman Kimba~l said that he hè:td learned a lot è:tt the school, and felt that the patrolmen attended would give the city better police protection along with making patrolmen out of them. Mrs Lee Davis spoke before the council saying that the histo:c>ical society wþ.5com:¡hiling the history of Jefferson County and 'since the city council ö.nd the county commissioners and the chamber of commerce ö.re the three bodies in this community that are interested in puch a type orpromotion of culture to the community and that the chamber of commerce ö.nd the county commissioners had endorced the project and would like to have the city council do the same. It was moved by Councilman Ruby seconded by Councilman Judy that the city couhcil endorce the project of the Historical society. Motion carried. '. . Gentlemen: . Would it meet with the Councils approval for the Chamber of Commerce to explore the possibility¡" of g~ants for restoration of Historical Sights or the Federal Progr:~s for Individual & community improvements. This would be to find out just what sort of conditions must bEl met if such funds are to be obtained~ The main thought in point was the possible improvement of the Ci ty Hall. There was no intent of pushing for improvements but just to see what conditions would be required. If the Council hö.s no objection we had a !notion made and pö.sse:d at todays meeting to find out some of the details involved. We do not wish to presume on any of the Citys initiative in the matter but more in the spmrit of cooperation. Very Sinc,erely., . E . R. May President Mayor Sullivan referred the above communicati on to the Building Committee. NEW & OLD BUSINESS Councilman Hoglund said he would like to pospone the meeting of the finance committee from the 28th of June until the l~th of July, the rea'son being that the elerk then would be in a position to project future revenues as well as balance for the: six month period. . Councilman Judy reported that a sign was in the walk at the corner of Quincy and Water street that people were having to walk out in the street to get around the sign. Mayor Sullivan asked the Chief of Police to take care of the matter. Councilman Judy al so reported that the sidewalk by theTown 'Ilavern was in ne ed of rep ai rs, that it was in. a hazardeouàs condition, he asked who was responsible the city- or the owner, he was informed that it was up to the owner to repair the sidewalk" Collncilm1;ln Judy said he W) uld contact the wwner."' .
