AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF PORT TOWNSEND AMENDING
SECTION 2.64.050, BEREAVEMENT LEAVE, OF THE PORT
TOWNSEND MUNICIPAL CODE TO INCLUDE STEPPARENTS
WHEREAS, Port Townsend CitY employees are entitled to bereavement leave spanning
one to three days for the purpose of traveling to and attending a funeral; and
WHEREAS, PTMC Section 2.64.050, listing and defining "immediate family" does not
include stepparents; and
WHEREAS, the City Council deems it appropriate that bereavement leave be available
to employees who wish to attend the funeral of their stepparent(s),
NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Port Townsend does ordain as
follows:
Section 1, Section 2.64.050, Bereavement leave, of the Port Townsend Municipal
Code is hereby amended to read as follows:
2.64.050 Bereavement leave.
An employee who has a death in his immediate family will be granted one to three days
bereavement leave, depending upon the amount of travel required to attend the funeral.
"Immediate family" for the purpose of this section shall be defined as mother, steP-mother,
father, step-father, spouse, children, sister, brother, mother-in-law and father-in-law. When
approved by the mayor, an extension of emergency leave may be granted for the employee
where conditions necessitate it. An employee shall not be entitled to both bereavement leave
pay, holiday pay, sick leave pay or vacation pay, or any more than one of those,, for the
same time. Bereavement leave shall not be deducted from sick leave or vacation leave at any
time.

Section 2,. Severability. If any provision of this ordinance or its application to any
person or circumstance is held invalid, the remainder of the ordinance, or the application of
the provision to other persons or circumstances is not affected.
This ordinance shall take effect and be in force five days after the date of its
publication in the manner proVided by law.
Read for the first, second, and third times and passed by the City Council of the City
of Port Townsend, Washington, at a regular meetin held this /5 re'day of
October, 1995.
