CITY TO HOST SAFE STREETS FOR ALL OPEN HOUSE
Drop-in open house will feature planning for safer streets in Port Townsend.
PORT TOWNSEND – The City of Port Townsend is developing a Safety Action Plan to improve
safety for everyone who walks, bikes, rolls, and drives in our community. This Plan is funded by
the federal Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant program of the US Department of Transportation.
“The SS4A program supports the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Roadway Safety
Strategy with a goal of zero roadway deaths using aSafe System Approach. The City pursued a
grant opportunity with SS4A to help identify safety issues with our local roads and to create an
action plan to address them. The resulting Safety Action Plan will be an excellent tool for
prioritizing safety projects and obtaining funding assistance through grants,” said David
Dinkuhn, City Engineer for the City of Port Townsend.
Community members are invited to stopby anopen house featuring this planning effort from
5:00 –7:00pm on Thursday, October 20 at the Cotton Building, 607 Water Street in Port
Townsend. Attendees will learn about the SS4A plan purpose, goals, and process, as well as
explore results from our spring 2026 Safety Concern Survey, our safety analysis findings related
to injury and crash trends, and potential safety countermeasures. Project Manager David
Dinkuhn and consultant team members will be present to answer questionsand hear
perspectives on local street safety.
Over 250 respondents completed the survey between May 18 – June 30. The survey asked
respondents to share general or specific safety concerns by type (pedestrian, bicycle, driver,
crash, near miss, etc.) and location (roadway at intersection/not at intersection, pedestrian
crossing, sidewalk, etc.). Respondents could pin locations on a map for their concern and
suggest opportunities for safety improvements.
A draft Safety Action Plan will be posted online for public comment in November 2026.
