00:00:00.000 --> 00:00:01.340
Council Chambers: Inside the box.
2
00:00:03.570 --> 00:00:22.349
Council Chambers: Happy New Year, everyone! Welcome to the January
meeting of the Arts Commission. Look at this beautiful full table of so
many wonderful people. This is an exciting, exciting start to the year.
We'll start by calling the meeting to order. It's 3.03 PM, and we'll
begin the roll call. I'm Alexis Aeravito, Chair.
3
00:00:22.440 --> 00:00:33.000
Council Chambers: Katie Goodman, Staff Liaison. Sheena Yuritz,
Commissioner. Rafina Garrass, poet laureate, thank you. Simon Lineage,
Commissioner.
4
00:00:33.480 --> 00:00:35.300
Council Chambers: Lee, City Council.
5
00:00:35.760 --> 00:00:37.560
Council Chambers: Dan Graussman, Vice Chair.
6
00:00:37.760 --> 00:00:40.380
Council Chambers: Melanie Yazumski, Commissioner?
7
00:00:40.610 --> 00:00:43.720
Council Chambers: Commissioner. Okay.
8
00:00:44.840 --> 00:01:00.470
Council Chambers: Cool, the next item on our agenda, the sound of my cell
phone turning on that, is elections, just to get us started on a new
year, on a great foot.
9
00:01:05.030 --> 00:01:13.940
Council Chambers: I'm just excited about any of these roles. I think we
just start with nominations.
10
00:01:14.750 --> 00:01:34.539
Council Chambers: I was so excited to put my hand up first. I'm so
excited that you did. To, not only express gratitude for the wonderful
leadership we've had for the last year, with you at the helm, but to
nominate you for yet one more year as chair of our commission. I'd like
to serve you.
11
00:01:34.900 --> 00:01:53.070
Council Chambers: Lonnie, do you know the order of procedure? Like, what
do I say next? I wouldn't do that for another. I would do this for
another. Is there a second for nomination? No, Becky. Any discussion? Is
there anyone else who's interested in that role, or role?
12
00:01:53.170 --> 00:02:03.480
Council Chambers: I'm not… don't, you know… I will say there are other
candidates that are qualified, but I would like to… I should have said
it. I appreciate it.
13
00:02:03.570 --> 00:02:18.479
Council Chambers: I will accept that nomination, and I will say that over
the course of the next year, like, I feel like 2026 is a good year of
transition from my personal life, and so I'm excited to think about,
14
00:02:18.480 --> 00:02:30.319
Council Chambers: succession, and so if there's, during the course of
this year, if you'd like to talk at any point about what it's like to be
chair, or insights, I'm very, very, very open, and we'd super happily sit
down with any
15
00:02:30.500 --> 00:02:32.520
Council Chambers: Agreed, Dan, that there's a lot of…
16
00:02:32.820 --> 00:02:44.040
Council Chambers: We've got a whole exciting slate of commissioners now,
and a lot of dedication and activity and momentum that's built over the
last year, and so,
17
00:02:44.370 --> 00:02:48.529
Council Chambers: There's a lot of qualified people sitting around this
table, so happy to talk anything.
18
00:02:51.010 --> 00:03:10.170
Council Chambers: Yeah, that's a rough statement. If there are no other
nominations, then, for chair, I… we can take a vote. All in favor? All in
favor of, I guess, Alexis remaining chair of Arts Commission?
19
00:03:10.410 --> 00:03:15.159
Council Chambers: Thank you so much. Any…
20
00:03:15.490 --> 00:03:36.439
Council Chambers: That'd be rough. It's okay. We don't want our national
politics variants influence. Everyone should feel very free to speak.
Okay, cool. Well, I will remain chair, it looks like, for another year.
Happy to do that. Awesome.
21
00:03:36.510 --> 00:03:42.749
Council Chambers: Vice Chair is an exciting role, and I'm not… I would
love to know,
22
00:03:42.860 --> 00:04:00.869
Council Chambers: Dan would like to speak to that role, the months that
you've been in that position, and if you… how you're feeling about it.
Thank you, yes, I would like to speak to it. So, I've been happy to be
Vice Chair. I think the number one role, the responsibility is to run the
meeting if you can't, so that's something to keep in mind.
23
00:04:00.870 --> 00:04:04.590
Council Chambers: I'm happy to do it if no one else is interested.
24
00:04:04.590 --> 00:04:06.310
Council Chambers: to,
25
00:04:06.320 --> 00:04:19.360
Council Chambers: lean back on your comment of succession's role, it's a
really good idea, if you see that in your future, to at least have a year
as vice chair, because you get the, incoming memos, the chair and vice
chair get all the
26
00:04:19.390 --> 00:04:41.889
Council Chambers: emails, which is really good to acquaint yourself with
procedures and what's happening. I don't see being chair in my future,
because just family commitments is not something that I'm willing or able
to do. Maybe a reverse word, able to do. So, I'm willing to do vice chair
again if no one else would like to step up, but this is a great time to
step up.
27
00:04:41.950 --> 00:04:44.549
Council Chambers: I can think of a few people that would be awesome at
it.
28
00:04:45.940 --> 00:04:48.010
Council Chambers: Agreed. Okay.
29
00:04:48.120 --> 00:04:54.110
Council Chambers: Is there anyone who'd like to nominate themselves? You
know, in light of that, any discussion, or…
30
00:04:54.290 --> 00:04:57.859
Council Chambers: Anyone feeling called about the vice chair at this
time?
31
00:04:58.510 --> 00:05:03.089
Council Chambers: It's pretty easy unless called upon for duty.
32
00:05:04.230 --> 00:05:05.460
Council Chambers: Going one?
33
00:05:05.670 --> 00:05:17.280
Council Chambers: We're gonna all get so excited about Robert Special
Order this year, so that everyone feels so confident in their ability to
run these meetings, which is… it's well within your wheelhouse.
34
00:05:18.170 --> 00:05:34.560
Council Chambers: One other thing to point out, even as vice chair, it
doesn't mean you have to run the meeting. There could be someone else
that could run it that you could… and I'm always comfortable with running
a meeting. That's true. Also, I attend almost every meeting.
35
00:05:34.830 --> 00:05:54.369
Council Chambers: Okay, well, I would nominate Dan Graussman to be Vice
Chair, unless there's anyone else who's gonna look really excited in 30
seconds. Dan, do you accept that nomination? Well, I have another
nomination, so then we both have to do them both. Yeah, I would like to
nominate Joshua's son.
36
00:05:57.880 --> 00:06:04.199
Council Chambers: Well, you have to accept that. You don't have to accept
that. I had to go over here.
37
00:06:04.340 --> 00:06:24.530
Council Chambers: You've had that a lot in the short time you've been
with us, I have to say. I appreciate that, and I really enjoy being part
of the Commission, and maybe, depending on how 2026 goes, I may be
interested in this position.
38
00:06:24.740 --> 00:06:27.030
Council Chambers: I appreciate that. Thank you, Kyle.
39
00:06:27.340 --> 00:06:37.630
Council Chambers: We could also have midterm elections, so if, like, you
know, in the summertime, you get really excited about first chair or
chair, feel free to, you know.
40
00:06:38.330 --> 00:06:54.630
Council Chambers: Okay, then we go back to Dan's nomination. Yeah, I
think Heidi would also be good, but she's not here to accept that. She's
got her hands full.
41
00:06:54.720 --> 00:07:02.780
Council Chambers: And I think Simon would be good, too. Simon travels a
lot. That's the mainly hesitation there. So, in lieu of…
42
00:07:04.000 --> 00:07:11.859
Council Chambers: other candidates stepping up, I would be willing to
continue, especially, like, the midterm election idea. Yeah. We'll cross
that bridge later. Right, thanks.
43
00:07:12.140 --> 00:07:13.100
Council Chambers: Okay.
44
00:07:13.580 --> 00:07:25.350
Council Chambers: Thank you for the nomination. Thank you for… thank you
for the nomination. There we go. Okay, I guess we can take it to a vote,
then. All in favor of Dan Graussman remaining as Vice Chair?
45
00:07:26.390 --> 00:07:49.699
Council Chambers: Beautiful. My name is, didn't see any. Okay, great.
Okay, and then Treasurer is our last position. I just want to make a
special mention about Treasurer, the nature of Treasury, or these
positions in general.
46
00:07:49.700 --> 00:07:53.479
Council Chambers: It's my understanding that at various points in time,
the Arts Commission has had
47
00:07:53.480 --> 00:08:06.309
Council Chambers: like a secretary, like, pre-having a clerk present to
do that, this work. So, the Treasury transferer role is really well
supported at this point through the work that our staff liaison does.
48
00:08:06.310 --> 00:08:19.840
Council Chambers: So you're primarily just giving voice to the numbers,
who's reporting, the balances when it comes time to looking at our grant
numbers. It's just nice to have them kind of top of mind. And so…
49
00:08:20.910 --> 00:08:25.920
Council Chambers: Yeah, it's not… you're not responsible for crunching
numbers, you're just kind of…
50
00:08:26.320 --> 00:08:38.710
Council Chambers: a physical manifestation of the memories of people.
Yeah, and we have not had a treasurer's position since Joe resigned from
the Commission, because he was our treasurer. So,
51
00:08:39.870 --> 00:08:42.750
Council Chambers: Any interest in this, this role?
52
00:08:44.690 --> 00:08:52.910
Council Chambers: Or should we talk about, sort of, absorbing it back
into the staff liaison role? I mean, I don't know what the process is
like for that, as far as just…
53
00:08:53.210 --> 00:09:04.980
Council Chambers: being the person who shares our totals at the meeting?
I'm not sure either. I don't know if treasurer is, like, a have-to-have.
Not a have-to-have.
54
00:09:05.090 --> 00:09:17.690
Council Chambers: I think with Joe, most of the times I kept the numbers
before you got here, but it was just kind of like I went through, I did…
I had to do all the grants, so… Yeah. It was just kind of keeping up with
the grants and the expenditures, like…
55
00:09:17.690 --> 00:09:30.949
Council Chambers: I mean, it's not that hard. You know exactly… when we
do trade report, you'll know what we start with, and we go from grants,
and then on. So it's pretty much like keeping a
56
00:09:31.310 --> 00:09:33.299
Council Chambers: An Excel sheet. Yeah.
57
00:09:33.310 --> 00:09:57.950
Council Chambers: I think it is that, you know, the Arts Commission is
one of the few commissions with its own amending budget, and so I believe
that's the reason that the body has a treasurer, which does, you know, is
somewhat meaningful, but I do think that from the city side, like,
everyone's keeping a pretty close eye on themselves, so it's a little bit
up to y'all whether you're like, well, we need this person because
58
00:09:57.960 --> 00:10:07.309
Council Chambers: We want to make sure our budget is demands the way that
we have commissioned. Right. Or, if you're like, we feel really com… we
feel comfortable with the kind of reporting back out to us.
59
00:10:07.870 --> 00:10:16.190
Council Chambers: Any thoughts? Interesting. So, I was gonna say,
precedent was that we… yeah, I was secretary for, like, 6, 7 years or
something like that, until…
60
00:10:16.190 --> 00:10:36.620
Council Chambers: Now, Lonnie came in, and then, well, Clerk came in.
Right, right. We had that job just absorbed. So that would mean that now
that Katie's here and does a lot of the financials, that we could do away
with it, but as I was about to make my comment, and then you just said,
because we have… we're the only advisory board with a budget, it does
maybe make sense that for checks and balances, we have another
commissioner. So I don't know, that's…
61
00:10:36.620 --> 00:10:55.930
Council Chambers: It's a really easy job. LTAC? Yeah, because the city
reports out, yeah. Well, the LTAC, I don't think, has officers, because
it has a totally different structure. You know, collectors and whatever,
yeah. But they do have a chair, I mean…
62
00:10:56.410 --> 00:11:14.019
Council Chambers: I think it's the council member. Yeah, you're right, it
is. So, yeah, great. Anyone got me treasure? Looks great out of revenue.
Now that we've talked about how treasurer, if there's anyone who's in
that.
63
00:11:17.520 --> 00:11:29.909
Council Chambers: I'm gonna do it.
64
00:11:30.040 --> 00:11:49.219
Council Chambers: Okay, I'll nominate… yeah, I'll nominate Melanie Zimbi
to be our treasurer for the 2026, reporting out of numbers. I mean the
letter so quickly. Great. Is there a second?
65
00:11:49.400 --> 00:12:06.630
Council Chambers: Thank you, Joshua, and accepted. I'll accept the
nomination, and then let's vote. All in favor of Melanie serving in the
Treasurer this year. Yay. Look at us. All right, well, it will be a
pleasure to…
66
00:12:06.780 --> 00:12:18.669
Council Chambers: serve alongside all of you this year. I'd love to be
the number here. So, let's move into the approval of our agenda today.
67
00:12:18.830 --> 00:12:30.180
Council Chambers: Looks exciting to me. I think there's one change, which
is that we're gonna, Rafina might present a poem during public comment,
sort of at the top of the meeting.
68
00:12:31.940 --> 00:12:44.119
Council Chambers: Any other changes that anyone sees that needs to be
made? Should we have a Fred intro, or is that going to be in your… Okay,
never mind.
69
00:12:44.890 --> 00:12:49.789
Council Chambers: Any comments on clients? How about Moto crew?
70
00:12:58.910 --> 00:13:06.830
Council Chambers: I think it does have to be a Clifer, unfortunately.
Really? I can't build anything? No, you are… you are in the bridge.
71
00:13:06.870 --> 00:13:20.929
Council Chambers: But you're here as a liaison. Thank you, Melanie.
You're like me, we're liaisons, so we're kind of, like, experts. Okay, I
guess you're good to know the rules. Yeah. Okay, all in favor of
approving our agenda today.
72
00:13:22.610 --> 00:13:26.179
Council Chambers: Cruise through, beautiful, and the minutes from
December 4th.
73
00:13:28.180 --> 00:13:29.610
Council Chambers: No lost beard.
74
00:13:30.230 --> 00:13:36.279
Council Chambers: Oh yeah, I remember, I forgot about this whole thing,
we had to wait.
75
00:13:36.660 --> 00:13:42.500
Council Chambers: Delicate… Any amendments?
76
00:13:45.870 --> 00:13:59.660
Council Chambers: So I would have the exact wording read back a couple
times to get it in here accurately, that was good. I remember one
sometimes was like, wait, what was said? Yeah, like, your motion, that
was good.
77
00:14:01.530 --> 00:14:02.480
Council Chambers: Hey.
78
00:14:03.160 --> 00:14:06.430
Council Chambers: Okay, then a motion to approve the minutes.
79
00:14:08.040 --> 00:14:12.480
Council Chambers: Thank you, Joshua, all in favor?
80
00:14:13.680 --> 00:14:22.100
Council Chambers: Once again, we have. Okay, now we can move into our
public comment. Is there anyone here who would like to make public
comment?
81
00:14:22.670 --> 00:14:27.840
Council Chambers: Yes. Okay.
82
00:14:27.840 --> 00:14:46.620
Council Chambers: Well, I'll give a quick update, too. I just want to
thank you. I just started in my tenure, and it has been fabulous so far.
Katie has done an outstanding job, and also Melody, and just sort of
supporting the activities of the lineup, and I've already completed a
poet's Walk.
83
00:14:46.620 --> 00:15:10.770
Council Chambers: We… a group of us, maybe about 11 or 12 poets, and non-
poets, you know, poet curious, they, walked with me through Fort Ward on
a very cold and windy day, and we got up to the vault, and I gave them
the atmosphere poem that we read together, last time, and let them lean
back into that sort of, monument that, that you see when you sit on the
throne.
84
00:15:11.090 --> 00:15:25.849
Council Chambers: I don't know if you got to see, and it has excellent
acoustics, and that was fun. And then we had tea and cookies in my art
studio that Katie helped me procure so that I can write bespoke poems for
many of the events, and
85
00:15:25.850 --> 00:15:50.809
Council Chambers: So it's been fabulous, I'm enjoying it, and it's
rippling through. I have people writing to me on the email already. I
have, soccer team players writing soccer haikus on these little pocket
poems, and we're gonna have little stations at the library, and hopefully
Velocity Coffee Shop, and I also got some moms of homeschoolers to write
some poems as well. If any of you want to write a poem, I'll need you
some of these as well.
86
00:15:50.810 --> 00:16:05.939
Council Chambers: So, it's been great, and I do want to also thank, Grace
Love again for nominating me. She is also a local musician and artist. I
think it's been hard for her. And I just want to acknowledge that
sometimes we don't know what we need.
87
00:16:05.940 --> 00:16:14.170
Council Chambers: Until we actually believe it's important enough to go
and do it. Despite the numbers, right? Like, the first post walk.
88
00:16:14.170 --> 00:16:31.320
Council Chambers: And I love people, but I think people are talking to
each other, and they're definitely talking about the cookies actors.
Please do come. The poem I'm going to read, has a touchpoint in an old
family story, and unfortunately, two of you have at least already heard
this at the inauguration, so you'll hear it again.
89
00:16:31.320 --> 00:16:37.199
Council Chambers: But I think it's important, in these times, with all
the political activities that are going on.
90
00:16:37.200 --> 00:16:41.109
Council Chambers: To, kind of, steady yourself, in poetry.
91
00:16:41.200 --> 00:16:59.390
Council Chambers: So my Uncle Tony and my father, sailed the Philippine
Islands on a lumber ship, delivering lumber to different islands. And one
of the seasons was a terrible monsoon season, and due to the longer time
in the wild sea and storms, the food supplies ran out completely.
92
00:16:59.390 --> 00:17:01.860
Council Chambers: And the crew began to fear for their lives.
93
00:17:01.920 --> 00:17:12.710
Council Chambers: And they organized a meeting. So my Uncle Tony, who was
the captain, lashed my father, to the mast of the boat, and that was his
younger brother and his best friend.
94
00:17:12.950 --> 00:17:25.400
Council Chambers: And then after he did that, he shot the one handgun on
the catamaran into the sky. And a torrent of flying fish were taken up by
the swell, and they landed in the boat.
95
00:17:25.990 --> 00:17:38.920
Council Chambers: This is unbelievable. And most of the people on that
boat were people of faith, and it was a miracle enough to feed the crew,
and to save the lives of my uncle, my dad, so that they could all reach
rapport.
96
00:17:38.920 --> 00:17:56.549
Council Chambers: The title of this poem, which is an Ars Poetica poem,
which means it's a poem about writing poetry or the poet process, the
title is Padava, which is a word in Bical, it's the native dialect of my
parents, and the translation of it is my beloved, my favorite.
97
00:17:56.890 --> 00:17:57.810
Council Chambers: Okay.
98
00:17:59.360 --> 00:18:04.089
Council Chambers: My beloved, my favorite.
99
00:18:04.660 --> 00:18:13.900
Council Chambers: This is to say, I have been fishing in the sky for
words to land a pocket poem. Yours to keep.
100
00:18:14.050 --> 00:18:24.309
Council Chambers: Beloved. To carry you through hard things, lost at sea,
a grieving swell of unease, memory that may never turn.
101
00:18:24.620 --> 00:18:25.640
Council Chambers: Still.
102
00:18:26.460 --> 00:18:27.480
Council Chambers: Hope.
103
00:18:27.840 --> 00:18:31.499
Council Chambers: When the waste fog like deadly potion, don't drink it
in!
104
00:18:31.940 --> 00:18:35.199
Council Chambers: Swallowing the briny sea is uncomfortable.
105
00:18:35.650 --> 00:18:38.789
Council Chambers: You still have other ways to navigate.
106
00:18:39.210 --> 00:18:41.190
Council Chambers: Stargates.
107
00:18:42.180 --> 00:18:54.919
Council Chambers: Way out the wind, in wonder at the sea's constancy,
wave and ripple, black and light, shimmer swell, cold and quiet.
108
00:18:55.690 --> 00:19:01.889
Council Chambers: Seas always return to shore finding peace in the space
between.
109
00:19:02.530 --> 00:19:05.060
Council Chambers: Rest now, and you bottom have to go.
110
00:19:05.320 --> 00:19:14.349
Council Chambers: It is not so different than the catalogan of ancestors.
They shine on you, storm or sun, begotten one.
111
00:19:14.840 --> 00:19:20.770
Council Chambers: Even if taken by typhoon or tsunami, you are the bridge
of flight.
112
00:19:21.340 --> 00:19:26.919
Council Chambers: The earth sits in your belly, so eat the falling stars.
113
00:19:27.180 --> 00:19:31.959
Council Chambers: When your heart aches for sea change, bless yourself to
the best.
114
00:19:32.500 --> 00:19:38.419
Council Chambers: You drowning in rain, Know that sometimes fish fly.
115
00:19:38.840 --> 00:19:41.939
Council Chambers: Your mutinous minds will be fed.
116
00:19:42.530 --> 00:19:50.520
Council Chambers: I will still scale flying fish for you, removing the
grayish slime that protects against illness in water.
117
00:19:50.740 --> 00:19:54.749
Council Chambers: They will be clean, and you will have life.
118
00:19:55.220 --> 00:20:07.810
Council Chambers: Though I will mourn them, their sacrifice. Even if
poems fall like stars to pause, or rush like frenzied comets, even if
poems cannot be granted in place of potholes.
119
00:20:08.040 --> 00:20:21.510
Council Chambers: This is to say, I love you, Port Townsend. Potholes,
politics, and all. This is to say, Padaba, the poem becomes a gift.
120
00:20:21.790 --> 00:20:26.999
Council Chambers: When you receive nourishment, until then, it's just a
fish.
121
00:20:27.400 --> 00:20:31.049
Council Chambers: Know by heart the celestial map of stars.
122
00:20:31.410 --> 00:20:36.200
Council Chambers: Two fish are enough for multitudes.
123
00:20:36.340 --> 00:20:37.550
Council Chambers: And Padata.
124
00:20:38.480 --> 00:20:53.999
Council Chambers: Thank you for everything you're doing for the arts.
It's really marvelous. Thank you so much, this is empty.
125
00:20:55.640 --> 00:21:07.280
Council Chambers: This one is Andy, if anyone would like to come. It
turns out it's really relaxing 575. Take care.
126
00:21:07.380 --> 00:21:19.180
Council Chambers: Move to adjourn. I think that covers it. I'm ready to
go.
127
00:21:19.750 --> 00:21:28.810
Council Chambers: Yeah, public comment. Yeah. I don't think we have any
public commenters online.
128
00:21:29.140 --> 00:21:35.110
Council Chambers: So we can move into our chair update.
129
00:21:35.110 --> 00:21:56.919
Council Chambers: And we would love to welcome our new Council liaison,
Fred Obie. Welcome to our world. Thank you so much. Pleasure to be here.
Looking forward to working with everybody here. Yeah, I wonder if you
would mind, I don't know, sharing a brief update about introduction,
anything that particularly excites you about the Townsend Parks
community, or…
130
00:21:56.960 --> 00:22:20.220
Council Chambers: I don't know. I would just say that I, you know, I've
been a long-time supporter of the arts. I grew up in the arts. My father
was a theater professor at a university, and, you know, from the very
earliest ages, graduate students were grabbing me by the hand whenever
they needed a 7-year-old to walk across a stage when I'd play, or
something like that. And so I was an extra in lots of things, and of
course, when we traveled.
131
00:22:20.290 --> 00:22:27.740
Council Chambers: We went to all major theaters everywhere, you know,
across the United States, and saw all kinds of shows, great shows.
132
00:22:27.830 --> 00:22:41.110
Council Chambers: My father was particularly interested in Elizabethan
theater, so it was a lot of Shakespeare, so that was a grounding, and
I've all… I've been a musician all my life, pretty much, and
133
00:22:41.170 --> 00:22:49.200
Council Chambers: So, you know, the ARCs have been central for me for a
long time, and so I'm here to support it in any way I can.
134
00:22:49.890 --> 00:23:08.610
Council Chambers: Love to hear it. All right. Well, welcome. This is,
it's a fun group, I think. We're… and we're getting more fun all the
time, with new members and commissioners joining us, and, this is a
really exciting year for the arts in Fort Townsend, between a
reinvigorated
135
00:23:08.610 --> 00:23:23.390
Council Chambers: inaugural official Poet Laureate beyond the Poet
Laureate pilot program. We've had a chance to see Regina in action now
twice. I think it's just a really exciting, energizing time for us, so…
136
00:23:23.800 --> 00:23:46.119
Council Chambers: Huzzah! Anyone else would like to add anything, or
introduce themselves in a, I don't know, different way? You'll get to
know as you… Right. If anybody has any questions you want me to bring to
the Council for some reason, then, you know, feel free to step right. I'm
here to be some kind of avenue to the Council for all your ideas and
suggestions and things, so if you see something that
137
00:23:46.120 --> 00:23:56.429
Council Chambers: that we need to do, I'd be happy to hear all of those.
Oh, you will. I fully expect that. I look forward to the opportunity to
do that. Me too.
138
00:23:56.690 --> 00:24:14.670
Council Chambers: Well, great. An update on Commission applicants is that
we have two in the pipeline, which is very exciting, and, I believe
everything's moving ahead. Katie might have more information on this
specific. I know there was some
139
00:24:14.740 --> 00:24:18.400
Council Chambers: The new year, well, the new year of an election year
brings some…
140
00:24:18.970 --> 00:24:34.340
Council Chambers: change, like, some, like, administrative needs of the
city council meetings, which means that our appointments have been sort
of pushed onto later agendas, then.
141
00:24:34.470 --> 00:24:37.170
Council Chambers: You can check that deck. Yeah.
142
00:24:37.170 --> 00:25:00.790
Council Chambers: So, yeah, we'll have a full site, which would be
exciting, and yeah, we'll get this in front of Council on the consent
agenda, yeah, hopefully for the 22nd, and if not, like, at the end of the
end of February, so… But we're actually moving really quickly, because
when I was thinking about this, I pulled up my application, and I applied
to join the question in December, and he wasn't planning anything, so…
143
00:25:01.810 --> 00:25:07.730
Council Chambers: No, things are… we're doing better than they could be.
144
00:25:08.300 --> 00:25:26.629
Council Chambers: Well, we're doing, we're doing that, we're doing it.
Okay, well, Treasure Update, is actually going to be a staff
presentation, though. This is not, this is not a big switch. So yeah,
included in the packet, after…
145
00:25:26.960 --> 00:25:37.359
Council Chambers: The… monthly for the meeting schedule, which I think we
reviewed in December. But,
146
00:25:37.500 --> 00:25:46.990
Council Chambers: Councillor Obi, one thing that might be worth looking
at is at the bottom of that schedule, there are the Board and Commission
priorities for 2026, which are the things that we specifically discussed.
147
00:25:47.340 --> 00:25:51.470
Council Chambers: trying to get in front of Council at some point this
year.
148
00:25:51.540 --> 00:26:09.899
Council Chambers: So, none of, you know, none of those are really on the
docket for today, but at some point we'll be discussing, several of these
things. Mostly, a lot of them are, ones related to murals and, street
painting, which has been a priority for the Commission for a while, but
is, like.
149
00:26:09.980 --> 00:26:19.579
Council Chambers: winding through some different minis and stuff like
that, like, there's some interaction with HPC and different things to try
to figure out if there's a path forward for,
150
00:26:19.690 --> 00:26:33.640
Council Chambers: allowing that kind of art to happen, specifically in
historic districts, but elsewhere as well. And then sort of a review of
the art in public places policies and procedures, which is, like, a
document that,
151
00:26:34.260 --> 00:26:44.989
Council Chambers: outlines, like, how public art gets created in Port
Townsend, and it's pretty dense, so we're, like, trying to figure out if
there's a way to make it a little bit more accessible. Yeah. And then…
152
00:26:45.210 --> 00:26:48.389
Council Chambers: As you may know, last year.
153
00:26:48.760 --> 00:27:05.620
Council Chambers: we updated… PTAC had been working on this for some
time, and I was able to step in and kind of, like, grab the whole roll,
which was great, which has been working on this 1% for the Arts update,
to try to have that fund actually start building up.
154
00:27:05.620 --> 00:27:10.820
Council Chambers: money for projects, which was really exciting, and now,
like, seeing,
155
00:27:10.820 --> 00:27:21.580
Council Chambers: we're waiting to kind of see what that builds and what
we can do with some of those funds. So those are sort of, like, the
priorities that are most specifically related to the Council's work right
now.
156
00:27:21.910 --> 00:27:37.449
Council Chambers: And on page, I don't know, 8, I guess, of the packet,
is the budget for this year. We reviewed this in December as well. I
don't… there haven't been any expenditures yet in 2026.
157
00:27:37.530 --> 00:27:43.650
Council Chambers: I guess something to note is that it does say in this
budget that
158
00:27:44.000 --> 00:27:53.720
Council Chambers: PTAC intended to give $10,000 each in three rounds of
grants, but the Commission voted last year to actually sort of,
159
00:27:53.770 --> 00:28:04.009
Council Chambers: change the distribution a little bit, so the round
that's due… that's coming up in February, with voting in March, is
actually for 13,500.
160
00:28:04.010 --> 00:28:26.870
Council Chambers: And then the round is for $10, and then the last round
will be for $7,500, because it has such a smaller amount of time that
people can use that funding during the course of the year, because they
have to expend it by December 2025. It's like 45, 30, and 25, I believe,
percent of the actual $30,000 total. Yep.
161
00:28:26.890 --> 00:28:40.560
Council Chambers: Yeah, one… I mean, something to note here, I think, is
the $7,500 budget item for the art awards, so that's coming up and will
be a big part of the Commission's work, I think, for the next
162
00:28:40.600 --> 00:28:47.710
Council Chambers: you know, several weeks, but that also, I think,
accounts for funds that will be…
163
00:28:48.250 --> 00:28:59.519
Council Chambers: towards the 2027 awards, if that makes sense? So, like,
advertising and other things that we… you guys will want to think about
that, putting some of that money aside for.
164
00:28:59.540 --> 00:29:08.360
Council Chambers: when hiring's after, you know, February 27th, or
whatever, when the awards are… the new 2025 awards are awarded.
165
00:29:09.330 --> 00:29:15.710
Council Chambers: And… and one of the things I was also thinking about
was that once the awardees are…
166
00:29:15.860 --> 00:29:33.590
Council Chambers: chosen, I would imagine that y'all would like to make
an announcement of some sort in advance of the actual ceremony, and that,
you know, putting aside some funds to do an ad or something random year
for that would probably be a worthwhile thing to consider.
167
00:29:33.760 --> 00:29:39.729
Council Chambers: So those are some of the things that I don't know, just
like in terms of the budget to think about at the moment.
168
00:29:39.850 --> 00:29:52.980
Council Chambers: We'll look a little bit later at some of those videos,
that's a preview of some of the videos that Cold Pizza Creative made for
the PTAC grant awardees for last year. We're almost done, there's two
more to go, and then I can do at least
169
00:29:52.980 --> 00:29:56.400
Council Chambers: more publicly, and…
170
00:29:56.400 --> 00:30:13.670
Council Chambers: you would like to continue that work in this year,
which I would support, and that's what that budget line item is for, but
I guess, ultimately, that would be a commission at some point. Katie, can
you also speak to, the increase in our budget from last year and over
here?
171
00:30:13.990 --> 00:30:37.039
Council Chambers: Yeah, so the budget last year was $33,600, I believe,
$500? And yeah, this year it's almost $50,000, which I think is a pretty
large increase, yeah, which is really exciting. It's a really big deal.
Yeah, it's a really big deal, and I think it speaks to the fact that the
city is investing in this part of our, you know, community, the creative
community and the arts.
172
00:30:38.730 --> 00:30:46.999
Council Chambers: That additional fund was sort of like a one-time kind
of stopgap before…
173
00:30:47.000 --> 00:31:01.509
Council Chambers: money starts flowing into 1% for the arts, municipal
Arts Fund. So, the idea, I think, is that it becomes a little more self-
sustaining over time, because those capital projects are adding to that
funding. So hopefully, you know, hopefully
174
00:31:01.510 --> 00:31:09.510
Council Chambers: You never know what's going to happen year over year,
but if that goes as planned, be able to sustain something at this level,
or beyond.
175
00:31:09.630 --> 00:31:32.980
Council Chambers: So, for context, I just want to share with our… my
fellow commissioners that from the years 2009 to 2015, the Arts
Commission had a budget of $19,600. We got a bump to $22,000 in 2016-
2017, and then it hovered around $24,000 to $25,000 until…
176
00:31:33.220 --> 00:31:48.939
Council Chambers: 2023, 2024. So, this is a considerable increase during
a time when, a lot of municipalities are choosing to divest from the
arts, so it's a really big deal that, that we're actually growing in this
direction and embracing this
177
00:31:48.940 --> 00:31:59.340
Council Chambers: clearly a cultural identity that has existed here
since, 2009, but, you know, it's really cool to see that, that
transformation, so that's one of the reasons why I feel
178
00:31:59.340 --> 00:32:09.799
Council Chambers: I think it's a great year to be in Portugal, so, yeah.
That's really huge, and, there's a good reason to feel really energized
and excited about what is involved.
179
00:32:09.800 --> 00:32:26.799
Council Chambers: It might also be worth noting that during those years
of the $19,000 to $22,000, we were consistently documenting shortfalls,
like, you know, we were comparing our ask to what we could fund, and it
was a big difference. The best we could do was kind of document the need.
180
00:32:26.800 --> 00:32:47.650
Council Chambers: So it's not as though the need was that before. We're
getting closer to that now. The utilization rate of the… those dollars
was in the, like, 97% to 115% for those years, so it, it was really high,
and just consistently, like, the year over year.
181
00:32:47.880 --> 00:32:51.420
Council Chambers: It didn't move for a really long time, so it's now
moved.
182
00:32:51.890 --> 00:32:55.250
Council Chambers: That's, like, 150%, it's really big, so that's…
183
00:32:55.650 --> 00:33:08.480
Council Chambers: The other thing I think worth highlighting in the
budget this year is that, the Poet Laureate program, there was a stipend
for the Poet Laureate, but the Arts Commission didn't have a specific
budget for
184
00:33:08.480 --> 00:33:16.150
Council Chambers: projects, which we… was built into the budget this
year, so that means, like, Restina has an actual, you know, project
budget so that she can
185
00:33:16.580 --> 00:33:20.309
Council Chambers: do things like get this residency at Centrum, and, you
know.
186
00:33:20.890 --> 00:33:32.679
Council Chambers: paperwork on me, paper, you know, things like that,
which is great. And that's in addition to the Friends of the, Friends of
the Public Library, who have supported the, the, homeboy is doing,
187
00:33:32.800 --> 00:33:41.259
Council Chambers: programs through the library in the past, and that'll
continue as well. So it's just… I feel like it's nice, because it means
that there's, like, this really,
188
00:33:41.460 --> 00:33:50.560
Council Chambers: So, yeah, supported library component and a supported
community, you know, component that's just, like, one, like, wider than
that, which I think is great.
189
00:33:51.710 --> 00:34:00.499
Council Chambers: Well, why don't you roll on into your staff update with
the Creative District Grant and Sunshine Update. Yeah, so,
190
00:34:01.700 --> 00:34:09.380
Council Chambers: We got exciting news that our grant, like, passed sort
of the first hurdle of the Creative District
191
00:34:09.679 --> 00:34:19.309
Council Chambers: It's a capital… the capital project grant, which is, if
y'all remember, to do murals at the skate park. So yeah, they're,
they're… they are…
192
00:34:19.580 --> 00:34:32.299
Council Chambers: making their final determination on the 3rd, I believe,
on the February, but they recommended it sort of a chain of command,
193
00:34:32.300 --> 00:34:46.819
Council Chambers: So, yeah, we just thought it was, like, you know, nice
to hear, and I'm not sure how it works. I feel like in some place, in
some… like, in the legislature, my understanding is that recommendation
is pretty much
194
00:34:46.820 --> 00:34:59.740
Council Chambers: They're often sort of like a rubber stamp situation if
they have the funding. I'm not sure if this is, you know, where exactly
that makes us stand, but it's definitely good news. Yeah.
195
00:34:59.740 --> 00:35:15.400
Council Chambers: So it's going in the right direction, so it's exciting.
And then, yeah, then Soundcheck is, like, the… this is my children. They
just got off there. So, yeah, so anyway, that's good news, and hopefully
we'll have…
196
00:35:15.400 --> 00:35:30.980
Council Chambers: more good news, maybe by the next, PTAC meeting. And,
yeah, and then I just wanted to remind everybody about soundcheck.
Soundcheck is, like, all I'm doing right now for a little while, but
that's okay, there's time for everything.
197
00:35:30.980 --> 00:35:55.940
Council Chambers: please put the word, please come to Soundcheck. I guess
I, would imagine that we'll see you all at the Art Awards, but there's
also other exciting volunteer opportunities that if anyone has any extra,
extra any time that they would like to, spend helping out at the festival
otherwise, like, that would be awesome.
198
00:35:55.940 --> 00:35:59.790
Council Chambers: On the webpage, there's a really nice form and
everything.
199
00:35:59.790 --> 00:36:01.040
Council Chambers: So,
200
00:36:01.040 --> 00:36:15.359
Council Chambers: Thank you for your help spreading the word, being a
part of it beyond the Art Awards, which I know is going to be a lift,
but, and yeah, I think it's gonna be really… I think it's gonna be a
really cool weekend. People seem excited about it, so I'm feeling really
good about it. Does anyone have…
201
00:36:15.990 --> 00:36:22.450
Council Chambers: I should have asked a couple questions about the
budget, or about Soundcheck, or about this grant, or anything that I can
answer?
202
00:36:24.060 --> 00:36:26.429
Council Chambers: What is that? What's the total we're spending?
203
00:36:26.630 --> 00:36:39.860
Council Chambers: Oh, I… oh, you mean of the, soundtrack? Yeah, I guess.
Yeah, okay, not… yeah. It was… and the PTAC budget, because I didn't say
that at the end of the PTAC budget, but the soundtrack budget, is… it's
around $30,000 for the weekend. Yeah.
204
00:36:39.860 --> 00:36:49.640
Council Chambers: And our… the Press Commission budget this year is
$48,800, which is significant, yeah. Right, I heard that part.
205
00:36:49.930 --> 00:36:55.980
Council Chambers: And that… Is that $30,000 inclusive of the Arts Awards?
206
00:36:56.080 --> 00:37:00.700
Council Chambers: It is not exclusively afterwards. Yeah. But it's Alpac?
207
00:37:00.760 --> 00:37:15.489
Council Chambers: it's a combination of LTAC funding and, PTAC funding.
Yeah, and PTAC funding and, funding from the department budget. My
departmental budget, yeah.
208
00:37:15.490 --> 00:37:25.730
Council Chambers: Forgive me if this has been discussed before, but is
the actual logistics of the award portion all ironed out, like, who's
emceeing? Would you like to join our committee? Yeah.
209
00:37:25.760 --> 00:37:28.779
Council Chambers: I'll probably attend. Yeah, yeah.
210
00:37:29.300 --> 00:37:51.990
Council Chambers: That's what we… I just thought, wow, if somebody's not
dialing that in now, I could just be like, well, I thought you were doing
it. Right, right. Well, you are, ahead of your time by about 2 minutes.
Yeah, so let's just make sure there's any other questions on those
topics. So, yeah, the soundcheck, sort of rundown is included in your
packet as part of the press release.
211
00:37:51.990 --> 00:37:55.280
Council Chambers: But, yeah, it's… I think I…
212
00:37:55.280 --> 00:38:11.169
Council Chambers: I think it's, like, I feel really good about the
structure of it, and I think kicking it off with the Art Awards is gonna
be really exciting, and… yeah, it's, like, a lot of interesting things
going on over the course of the weekend. But, like, you know.
213
00:38:12.020 --> 00:38:27.980
Council Chambers: Volunteer support and, like, just community support is
going to be really key to making it successful, so, you know, you're
involved in other groups, you're involved with other, you know, arts
organizations that might want to, like, jump in and lend a hand, like,
please…
214
00:38:28.230 --> 00:38:33.129
Council Chambers: direct them… do ptcreativeDistrict.org slash subject.
215
00:38:33.420 --> 00:38:38.839
Council Chambers: And, or, and catch volunteer, if you wish, but that was
fine, too.
216
00:38:39.400 --> 00:38:41.560
Council Chambers: But yeah, that's…
217
00:38:41.790 --> 00:38:57.479
Council Chambers: more to come, you know, and hopefully, like,
advertising will start kind of popping up pretty heavily around town and
stuff like that. Yeah, where are these going? These are inescapable.
These are for you to take. Yeah, they're just going up beyond the usual.
Anywhere you want? Yep, totally. Yeah.
218
00:38:57.900 --> 00:39:10.109
Council Chambers: Cool, great, yeah. Then let's move into work groups,
and we'll talk about the Arts Awards, which is Alexis, Jacqueline, and
Sheena on the Arts Award committee.
219
00:39:10.790 --> 00:39:20.719
Council Chambers: We got cake. No, we won't lean too heavily on cake to
deliver more peace of it, but,
220
00:39:21.320 --> 00:39:28.509
Council Chambers: You know, we did a lot of pre-work around building the
rubric and standards for how we're going to select and,
221
00:39:28.510 --> 00:39:43.980
Council Chambers: solicit our Arts Awards nominees. We, as you all know,
because you've hopefully taken some time to review the nominations, 18
nominees, but not just 18 nominations, because numerous people were
nominated multiple times.
222
00:39:43.980 --> 00:39:46.780
Council Chambers: super exciting.
223
00:39:46.810 --> 00:39:58.129
Council Chambers: That's up from 3 last time. It's pretty rightful.
Again, our… Very promising. Yeah, our metrics are… our KPIs are on fire.
224
00:39:58.130 --> 00:40:18.530
Council Chambers: the number people would be very impressed. So, yeah, I
guess we can take questions about the rubric or process, or we can ask
ourselves the questions about how we're gonna do the next thing. I think
the idea is that,
225
00:40:19.180 --> 00:40:20.840
Council Chambers: we…
226
00:40:21.510 --> 00:40:35.360
Council Chambers: I heard if I'm wrong, Katie. We complete these for
ourselves, like, to kind of get our base numbers together. We email them
to Katie, who is our anonymizer, who will help
227
00:40:35.360 --> 00:40:44.829
Council Chambers: pull the numbers for each thing out for each of us, so
that we can then see, just by virtue of having 18 nominees,
228
00:40:44.900 --> 00:41:01.330
Council Chambers: And I really must pause to emphatically state that
these are 18 wonderful nominees, like, they're really… every single
person who was nominated is doing really cool, good work in this
community. I didn't see anyone who was like, yeah, I mean, they're…
229
00:41:01.980 --> 00:41:09.870
Council Chambers: Competition is fierce, and so that's part of the nature
of what a rubric can help us do, is make sure, like, to see
230
00:41:09.950 --> 00:41:19.850
Council Chambers: like, who's really standing out, and jumping out in
the, like, 90s, as far as these numbers are concerned. So,
231
00:41:19.850 --> 00:41:33.770
Council Chambers: Quick question on that. Yeah. Is there time during the
presentation to have, like they do for the film awards, like, the
nominees are, you know, to give a little shout-out, because there are so
many high-caliber nominees that we could say.
232
00:41:33.770 --> 00:41:42.019
Council Chambers: 18R, let's just quickly… Right, or they're in the
middle of one sentence, or, yeah, I think I, I, I think the spirit of…
233
00:41:42.020 --> 00:41:54.800
Council Chambers: this isn't my interpretation, but I think I'm gathering
from my conversations with you all and the broader arts community that,
like, the spirit of the reinvention or reimagining of our arts awards is
for it to be
234
00:41:55.850 --> 00:42:19.549
Council Chambers: in layman's terms, like a… just local art love fest, so
I think that that is the spirit. It's like, the more the merrier, the
more accolades and, positive recognition. Totally. And yeah, when we were
talking about that, I had that exact same, you know, at the Oscars, all
the nominees are mentioned. Although, I will say, not all, you know,
because I…
235
00:42:19.550 --> 00:42:23.730
Council Chambers: The Academy votes on a larger slate, but it gets
brought to the awards.
236
00:42:23.730 --> 00:42:27.500
Council Chambers: That's a perfect nature of a rubric, so…
237
00:42:27.500 --> 00:42:31.109
Council Chambers: Also, this might be a good time to say the whole…
238
00:42:31.110 --> 00:42:55.740
Council Chambers: putting together this. Thank you. Amazing. Made the
reviews so cool and high-tech, and yeah, shout out to you. I'm sorry I
forgot to include this particular… Oh, you're human? But now y'all have
it. This is my Photoshopper. Like, I know I did, like, doctoring to get
it, so I could do it for myself, like, 10 minutes before you sent it
funny.
239
00:42:55.740 --> 00:42:58.550
Council Chambers: And then I…
240
00:42:58.760 --> 00:43:07.039
Council Chambers: But there are physical copies if you are a paper
person, like I am, yeah, you can save some paper iron, potentially.
241
00:43:07.510 --> 00:43:14.210
Council Chambers: Joshua? Yeah, and so if we do choose to go to the New
River in a paper format…
242
00:43:14.220 --> 00:43:28.040
Council Chambers: drop it off here, you can take photos of it, or yeah.
Do you… or could… do you just want the final scores, or do you want all
of it?
243
00:43:28.130 --> 00:43:38.590
Council Chambers: I think of both things. Oh, I think it would be helpful
to have the whole thing, so it's like, so I have pieces to information
for everyone. That's what I was…
244
00:43:38.850 --> 00:43:47.459
Council Chambers: Yeah, I mean, well, I'll… I'll add up. I'll, add up.
I'll put everybody's score in the line, what the total is for each.
245
00:43:47.460 --> 00:44:05.530
Council Chambers: So I think this maybe came, before, you know, in one of
our meetings about the rubric, and if the scoring is just, oh, they're
all, like, you know, there might be some that are, are ties, like, and
with so many that…
246
00:44:05.530 --> 00:44:09.790
Council Chambers: I mean, who knows what will actually happen, but then
that lands.
247
00:44:09.890 --> 00:44:17.499
Council Chambers: on us to kind of… Yeah, just… okay, so that's where
that… Yeah.
248
00:44:17.880 --> 00:44:24.870
Council Chambers: Like, another system. I think we also get to decide
that, like the, like a big, like a…
249
00:44:27.120 --> 00:44:39.380
Council Chambers: meaning a threshold, if you will. So, like, if there's
18 nominees, and… You know…
250
00:44:39.940 --> 00:44:46.329
Council Chambers: 9 of them have scores of 80 or above, then that helps
us
251
00:44:46.480 --> 00:44:56.620
Council Chambers: narrow our focus so that we're not having to, like…
because again, all of these people are extremely qualified. There's some
limitation to, you know, we don't want to, like.
252
00:44:57.930 --> 00:45:16.140
Council Chambers: we kind of have to go off of the nominations that were
provided to us, which have limitations themselves. So, like, you know,
there was at least one nomination that I read through where, like, I have
more contextual knowledge about that person than the nomination form
suggested. Sort of, like, in the interest of…
253
00:45:16.140 --> 00:45:23.669
Council Chambers: But if you have to include, you know, websites and
stuff like that. Yeah, yeah, totally, totally, 100%. But we could also…
254
00:45:24.000 --> 00:45:28.319
Council Chambers: We're already broadening to 3 to 5 awarding, like,
like…
255
00:45:29.200 --> 00:45:52.320
Council Chambers: we could do 20, if that's kind of where we want this to
go, but I think we did want it to feel like, you know, there was an
exceptional demonstration, like, something that really cut above, or…
Right. And again, the hope is that, like, we'll continue this, so that,
you know, those people who were highly qualified nominees this round,
yeah, could have a strength, yeah.
256
00:45:52.420 --> 00:45:57.369
Council Chambers: I don't know if this is the right time to bring that
up, but Natalie. Yeah. I'm glad you said that, so…
257
00:45:57.690 --> 00:46:05.239
Council Chambers: having information in a small town, personally, about
individuals. For example, when I went through and did my scoring, one of
the
258
00:46:05.660 --> 00:46:18.530
Council Chambers: weighing criteria was if they were paid for their
position or if they were volunteering. That means something different to
me, but it wasn't always obvious, so I may know through the community if
that's the case or not, but should we be just
259
00:46:18.570 --> 00:46:41.719
Council Chambers: judging on what's in the nomination forms, or do we
bring our own knowledge? I think it's a… I think it's part of that
individualized approach, is that it's sort of… you can't not… you can't
not know what you know. Yeah. We all live separate, so, like, you have
all access to all of your brain. Yeah. And there's different… yeah,
that's part of it. It's meant to be our own…
260
00:46:41.720 --> 00:46:50.640
Council Chambers: And I'd like that about the Arts Commission. You are
one vote, you can subjectively raise yourself that way. And then my other
comment was, we may…
261
00:46:50.640 --> 00:46:53.179
Council Chambers: want to be run by the city attorney if
262
00:46:53.470 --> 00:47:10.539
Council Chambers: records used in scoring because there's money involved
become part of a record that needs to be collected, or only if that is a
document that's used for scoring and needing? Well, there's not money
involved, because we're not awarding financial awards.
263
00:47:10.540 --> 00:47:19.010
Council Chambers: But I think that's why we're getting the refixing for
her, which is being one of the reasons for the awards that are original.
264
00:47:19.010 --> 00:47:22.030
Council Chambers: And we don't have a meeting to decide.
265
00:47:22.050 --> 00:47:31.009
Council Chambers: Next… next… next commission meeting is when we'll,
like, be talking about it. So will I have all the applications so that we
can post them?
266
00:47:31.290 --> 00:47:33.769
Council Chambers: Like, oh, as part of the packet? Yeah.
267
00:47:34.630 --> 00:47:36.359
Council Chambers: Well…
268
00:47:36.970 --> 00:47:52.420
Council Chambers: Dan's thing, if that question comes up, you might want
to speak to him, but in the application.
269
00:47:53.520 --> 00:47:59.469
Council Chambers: The… if they're paid or not paid.
270
00:48:00.300 --> 00:48:19.989
Council Chambers: Okay, yeah, well, let's put that at lunch. It also may
be, like, that's where the laureate process was not… was… it was not
noticed with meetings, etc. That, like, happened through a subcommittee,
so if there's a desire…
271
00:48:20.560 --> 00:48:37.500
Council Chambers: I mean, this thought had not crossed my mind until just
now, but if there's a desire for the Commission to empower, essentially,
the Arts Award Committee to making these determinations with your
rubrics.
272
00:48:37.500 --> 00:48:47.849
Council Chambers: having been submitted, that's a possible offset. That's
a lot of pressure on the target, because I'm not necessarily excited
about, but,
273
00:48:48.310 --> 00:48:50.790
Council Chambers: That might be…
274
00:48:52.050 --> 00:49:13.620
Council Chambers: I don't know, what do you think, Josh? Yeah. I think we
should stick to the… I mean, we have a process. I think it's gonna be
fine. I do too. Yeah, I think it's gonna be fine, I think it's our… we're
not trying to keep the winner's secret, or whatever. Okay, that it's a
public meeting.
275
00:49:14.110 --> 00:49:16.620
Council Chambers: For scoring purposes, I would…
276
00:49:17.090 --> 00:49:32.900
Council Chambers: if people haven't already done their scoring, but have
just, like, looked over it, which was the request, which is great if
you've done it already, but, like, I would say that one of the things
that was… made it easier for the Poet Laureate process, which was
similar, was when people were relatively, like.
277
00:49:33.080 --> 00:49:41.009
Council Chambers: you know, I know you're kind of like, let's give
everybody a 20, or whatever, but people were decisive. And people were
pretty decisive and pretty, like, you know.
278
00:49:41.150 --> 00:50:04.500
Council Chambers: gave… gave a spread to the knowledge that allowed it
to, you know, that made it easier to figure out who was kind of the
people that were most, you know, like, the people most wanted to see the
position. Right. So, that's just a little sort of tip on scoring. And
those numbers… then those numbers can sort of look harsh, because they're
decisive, but it's not…
279
00:50:04.500 --> 00:50:29.469
Council Chambers: Like, I would really love for us to shift our thinking
to, like, oh, no, we're selecting 12 losers. We're selecting 5 people who
really deserve recognition for their contribution. And the losers are!
There's no losers in this situation. We're really looking to, like,
highlight the people who are doing especially great work, based off of
these nominations. Because also, there's lots of people doing
280
00:50:29.470 --> 00:50:44.110
Council Chambers: great work experience, it'll work. So, and, like, a lot
of this is just, like, at some point, the line has to sort of just gonna
be drawn in the sand, and we leave with that. I think something that also
helps me with that, I mean, is, like.
281
00:50:44.110 --> 00:50:47.349
Council Chambers: There's an encouragement to, like, you…
282
00:50:47.680 --> 00:51:12.490
Council Chambers: next year. Like, you're a good candidate. This doesn't
rule you out as a candidate. They're all great candidates. I mean, you
know, just to emphasize that, and I don't know if there's a way to kind
of encourage that, at the awards, or before, or how we communicate with
the nominees. Yeah, I think partly how we start that is by opening our
nominations this much earlier, like.
283
00:51:12.490 --> 00:51:20.459
Council Chambers: Ideally, they open the day after the awards this year,
where it's, like, everyone who's just been at this event and was really
excited about it.
284
00:51:20.460 --> 00:51:30.450
Council Chambers: It's already, like, percolating about who they couldn't
nominate for next year. And so this year, we had a really… actually a
pretty tight deadline in all these responses, so…
285
00:51:30.470 --> 00:51:46.700
Council Chambers: I mean, there were nominations where I was like, oh, I
wish I knew more about this person. Yes, there was a website, but, like,
that narrative explanation of, like.
286
00:51:47.050 --> 00:52:11.979
Council Chambers: the dynamicism of some of the nominations, they were
really helpful, and that… I mean, that is part of… that is one of the
things we were sort of looking for on the rubric, was the… that falls
under the alignment with civic value. It's like a complete nomination
that has a lot of information, and it's pretty rich. So is this kind of
an optional tool, then? Like, if I went to… We're all new.
287
00:52:11.980 --> 00:52:15.980
Council Chambers: Okay. And the second thing was, did you say anonymizer?
288
00:52:15.980 --> 00:52:21.860
Council Chambers: He's hard to say that. On the record.
289
00:52:22.360 --> 00:52:28.500
Council Chambers: Great. Ceremony updates, discussion, spaghetti!
290
00:52:28.730 --> 00:52:52.959
Council Chambers: That's a universal, that's… right! Could you speak to
the spaghetti aspect of the ceremony? So the ceremony! Well, that's part
of the plan for Friday evening is for the Art Awards from 5 to 6 30 at
the fairgrounds, followed by, like, a free community put on by the…
291
00:52:52.960 --> 00:53:17.939
Council Chambers: the kitchen that's out there, and headed up by Aaron
Stark Hospital, so there'll be pasta for everyone. In order to cover the
cost of that event, we are doing a $10 suggested donation for adults, but
no one turned away, and kids are free, or whatever. And then after that,
it transitions into a Dayton's party in the same space that the awards
ceremony would be in, and then, like, a bunch of bonfires outside, so
that's
292
00:53:17.940 --> 00:53:21.810
Council Chambers: Let's plan for Friday night, all out at the
fairgrounds.
293
00:53:21.810 --> 00:53:41.019
Council Chambers: So, yeah. But, yeah, I think it'll be really fun,
because I… hopefully it'll mean that, you know, people stay and come,
because they know they're going to get dinner, as well as find out, you
know, find out, but celebrate the awardees, yeah. Maybe experience some
live music, or…
294
00:53:41.020 --> 00:53:47.880
Council Chambers: a burst of art of some kind. I have gotten some
information about at least one,
295
00:53:49.140 --> 00:53:59.060
Council Chambers: somewhat local? I don't know if they're local, but I
know they've done events locally. Mc, so… Okay, cool. We have resources
coming together. If you have any, like.
296
00:53:59.420 --> 00:54:18.649
Council Chambers: If you aren't able to physically volunteer or serve on
the Arts Awards Committee, but you have a great idea, don't let that be a
barrier to stopping you from sharing that great idea, so shoot us an
email with any idea that you might have, like, oh, I know a great emcee,
or hey, it would be so cool if this person performed, just throw it out
there,
297
00:54:18.850 --> 00:54:20.000
Council Chambers: Always.
298
00:54:21.090 --> 00:54:23.699
Council Chambers: Excited to throw spaghetti at the wall.
299
00:54:24.080 --> 00:54:32.220
Council Chambers: Or a spaghetti and bonfire kind of tech. Yeah, yeah,
exactly. I love having a more bonfire. Okay.
300
00:54:32.360 --> 00:54:34.990
Council Chambers: We heard from, Regina.
301
00:54:35.210 --> 00:54:58.509
Council Chambers: And… was there any other things that we needed to touch
on with the ceremony, Katie? No, I don't think so. I think it was
actually put on that agenda with the intention that we would have met
before, but I totally didn't make us… We will, we will. But we will,
yeah. Yeah, no, I think just… just… yeah, make sure, you know, mark your
calendars. Yeah. February 27th.
302
00:54:58.510 --> 00:55:00.649
Council Chambers: And,
303
00:55:00.920 --> 00:55:11.909
Council Chambers: Yeah, I guess it was also just an open discussion.
People had wishes, or dreams, or desires, just… that they wanted to see
happen that night. This would be a good time to talk about it, so the
committee can take those things into account. Yeah. Right, so…
304
00:55:12.600 --> 00:55:14.739
Council Chambers: Welcome to the committee. Thank you.
305
00:55:15.980 --> 00:55:18.260
Council Chambers: Very nice!
306
00:55:18.510 --> 00:55:35.409
Council Chambers: 2026, Round 1 deadline coming up in February? Correct,
yeah. February, February 19th is the deadline for the, first round of
grants, and there's $13,500 available in that round.
307
00:55:35.800 --> 00:55:38.150
Council Chambers: Quite to you? Yes.
308
00:55:38.150 --> 00:55:54.749
Council Chambers: We haven't gotten any response yet, which is not
unusual at all. Yeah, they all come in the last couple of weeks. It's
better to take your time. Yeah. I'm planning on,
309
00:55:54.750 --> 00:56:15.919
Council Chambers: recording a, like, updated webinar for grants. Shelly
did one last year, and it's great, but it's not… it's outdated. I'm not
gonna do it live, because I don't think enough people to make it worth
it. I'll just record it and have it available online for people, and I
can reach out, you know, with questions easily.
310
00:56:16.470 --> 00:56:20.379
Council Chambers: They want to talk to me, and I'm gonna try to do that
by the end of the month.
311
00:56:20.570 --> 00:56:40.239
Council Chambers: And then, the other thing I wanted to mention was that,
so on the 28th of this month, I'm gonna have my first Nexus meeting of
the year, which, will be at the library, and I'm planning to have sort
of, like, an overview of all, like, the resources that are available.
312
00:56:40.240 --> 00:56:43.909
Council Chambers: From the city and from the creative district and stuff,
so he's going to talk about
313
00:56:44.120 --> 00:56:54.890
Council Chambers: the submission grants, it's talking about, like, the
Art Walk activation funding, the Arts in Action program, the library,
etc, like, stuff like that. So just trying to give people,
314
00:56:55.240 --> 00:56:56.270
Council Chambers: like…
315
00:56:56.360 --> 00:57:10.880
Council Chambers: it's hard to get to make sure people know about these
things, like, you would be surprised. So just, you know, trying to get
the word out in the creative community about the fact that all this stuff
is out there, and also just, like, you know, the city is trying to
support
316
00:57:10.880 --> 00:57:16.380
Council Chambers: The creative economy in your sector. Is there a time
for that? Yeah, it's 6 to 7.30.
317
00:57:16.380 --> 00:57:21.049
Council Chambers: It's always 6730 on the Forest Wednesday. Oh, okay.
Through October.
318
00:57:21.210 --> 00:57:32.690
Council Chambers: So, and the next one in February, we'll be at Northwind
Archange, right before SoundCheck, so let me see how that goes. Sorry, it
repeats every… Every fourth Wednesday through October.
319
00:57:33.080 --> 00:57:56.549
Council Chambers: And then, I thought, if we are… I think we're okay on
time, I think we're actually doing quite well on time, that y'all might
want to see a couple of these videos from this year that are not yet on
YouTube or whatever, because I'm waiting so we could just sort of, like,
announce them all at once, you know? But I think they're really nice.
Lonnie, maybe you can… Lonnie, if you please, if you…
320
00:57:56.550 --> 00:57:59.509
Council Chambers: So there was, I think,
321
00:57:59.590 --> 00:58:06.059
Council Chambers: there were… they signed me out. I'll come over there.
There were…
322
00:58:09.320 --> 00:58:19.160
Council Chambers: 19 grantees last year? You're talking about 19 grants,
okay. And,
323
00:58:20.330 --> 00:58:33.529
Council Chambers: We're making a total of 8 videos, I believe, of people.
The first round of France, this wasn't my option, because we hadn't
thought of it.
324
00:58:34.740 --> 00:58:43.460
Council Chambers: But… oh my god, you guys are gonna watch me take it?
It's so embarrassing.
325
00:58:44.840 --> 00:58:49.770
Council Chambers: And so we offer this, like, optional, sort of, like,
make of…
326
00:58:49.920 --> 00:58:54.860
Council Chambers: Short video about your project to people who,
327
00:58:55.950 --> 00:59:02.149
Council Chambers: Wanted two from the second round of grants, and the
third, and,
328
00:59:03.170 --> 00:59:16.099
Council Chambers: out of the 12 people or something, I guess we took us
up on it. And we, you know, the idea was that, you know, these were
really nice, cool ways for…
329
00:59:16.750 --> 00:59:32.429
Council Chambers: They will pay for the Arts Commission to be able to
show the things they're supporting, but that also these videos may be
useful for the artists themselves to promote double it, right? So there's
sort of, like, double duty.
330
00:59:33.430 --> 00:59:35.600
Council Chambers: Thank you.
331
00:59:36.560 --> 00:59:46.110
Council Chambers: You need to share it, like, let me see what we need.
332
00:59:47.340 --> 00:59:49.109
Council Chambers: So you want to talk to me?
333
00:59:49.520 --> 00:59:50.200
Council Chambers: Goodbye.
334
00:59:53.110 --> 00:59:58.310
Council Chambers: I'm worried that if we do it, because you have some
meetings, but…
335
01:00:01.840 --> 01:00:13.520
Council Chambers: We'll give you a shot. So, what's really cool is, like,
it's a very eclectic mix of things, in my, in my opinion. Pretty
eclectic.
336
01:00:14.420 --> 01:00:27.059
Council Chambers: group of things when he was funded, so everything from,
like, this, like, kids' art thing, to just, you know, Handel's Messiah,
or whatever, to, like, the accessibility project for,
337
01:00:27.200 --> 01:00:43.970
Council Chambers: So, anyway, so, so… not doable.
338
01:00:49.760 --> 01:00:51.910
Council Chambers: A whipping sound.
339
01:00:52.660 --> 01:00:54.476
Council Chambers: How do you do it.
340
01:00:55.460 --> 01:00:58.719
Council Chambers: This is one in particular we need to have.
341
01:01:00.690 --> 01:01:04.610
Council Chambers: Is it gonna get all weird if you put on the license?
342
01:01:14.960 --> 01:01:18.590
Council Chambers: Let me wrap up over there.
343
01:01:22.990 --> 01:01:32.049
Council Chambers: It's not a phone TV.
344
01:01:32.860 --> 01:01:36.380
Council Chambers: Is the opportunity to accomplish?
345
01:01:36.860 --> 01:01:43.809
Council Chambers: Should be counted for that.
346
01:01:45.080 --> 01:02:02.399
Council Chambers: We can try that. Stop sharing and see if we just…
347
01:02:12.900 --> 01:02:22.939
Council Chambers: Alright. Well, sorry guys, I should have tested the
audio once. We all know the work, it's okay.
348
01:02:22.940 --> 01:02:32.949
Council Chambers: Well, what I can… what I'll do is I'll try to… I mean,
we'll have them all, and they'll be accessible soon. I just thought you
guys might enjoy it.
349
01:02:32.950 --> 01:02:36.850
Council Chambers: a little sneak peek, you know what I mean?
350
01:02:38.640 --> 01:03:03.509
Council Chambers: Picture a handle of the Messiah playing through the
background. This lady saying really nice stuff about how awesome PTAC is.
That's what's happening right now. Now they're all singing. This lady
really likes singing, and is really grateful for the grant.
351
01:03:03.510 --> 01:03:05.540
Council Chambers: To grab. Then they edit the notes.
352
01:03:05.680 --> 01:03:17.029
Council Chambers: It sounds really amazing, because it's, like, 100
people singing. It's beautiful, yeah. The videographers did a really
great job, like…
353
01:03:22.170 --> 01:03:30.470
Council Chambers: The Ripley is nice. When the nerves you a sound. It's
really nice. Yeah, they're really sweet.
354
01:03:30.470 --> 01:03:47.059
Council Chambers: Everyone says really nice things, and then they all end
with saying something, like, and we didn't even really prompt them, like,
saying something really nice about the forecast opportunity, and, like,
how involved it is to them. So, the final video that, Kyle is making is a
compilation of all the really nice things.
355
01:03:47.240 --> 01:03:53.029
Council Chambers: That, people say about 40,000 arts community, so we can
use that as sort of a…
356
01:03:53.200 --> 01:03:55.110
Council Chambers: So I'll be on the website.
357
01:03:55.110 --> 01:04:19.769
Council Chambers: I gotta say, those little 8.5x11 black and white
follow-up forms, where people say, we have so many people turn out, our
event was great.
358
01:04:19.770 --> 01:04:40.539
Council Chambers: put that next to this, I mean, because we can't all
attend these to see how wonderful it is. This is absolutely great. Yeah,
it's really, it's really cool. That's wonderful. Maybe these can be
shared in the creative district. Yes, totally, when they're up, when
they're done, for sure. Well, like, yeah.
359
01:04:40.860 --> 01:04:44.999
Council Chambers: They're really sweet, they're gonna do… and,
360
01:04:45.190 --> 01:04:59.629
Council Chambers: And I'm not sure this, you know, we… like I said, we
did build into the budget continuing this project, and since it's
already, like, called out in the budget, I don't know that it's something
that needs to be, like, a budget curation, but that's… so that's… that's
the plan, is to continue making them.
361
01:04:59.700 --> 01:05:07.629
Council Chambers: And yeah, hopefully we'll have, like, a bunch more
information, and more people, I think, will,
362
01:05:08.310 --> 01:05:14.560
Council Chambers: Like, no one has seen them. You know, people had to
kind of, like, imagine what they would be like, so the fact that we all
share them would be like…
363
01:05:14.920 --> 01:05:19.380
Council Chambers: Yeah, do you want one of these? I think people are
gonna be like, I do want one of those, you know, so…
364
01:05:19.610 --> 01:05:25.200
Council Chambers: I do wonder, if there's… well, I wonder if we can… but,
like,
365
01:05:25.870 --> 01:05:40.580
Council Chambers: if a couple of, like, if there could be ways, like,
because those ones are so, like, YouTube, they're a little longer form,
like, if there's an interest in, like, our ability to have them tailored
for social media, for example, in a way that, like.
366
01:05:40.590 --> 01:05:47.370
Council Chambers: I don't know, we could work with LTAC to, like, have
them distributed through Maine, like, I don't know, it seems like there's
ways to, like.
367
01:05:47.900 --> 01:05:59.790
Council Chambers: again, keep that… my unofficial Portal year of the
Port000 Arts Love Fest. All these different ways, right. I don't know,
just an idea. No, I know, it's a good idea. It's such a, you know, it's
such a…
368
01:06:00.030 --> 01:06:02.589
Council Chambers: It's just… it's really…
369
01:06:03.090 --> 01:06:11.890
Council Chambers: you know, Tyler was, like, they were supposed to be,
like, 60 seconds, and he was like… Yeah, keep in that story, you know
what I mean? It's actually… it's just such a…
370
01:06:12.250 --> 01:06:27.610
Council Chambers: But it's tricky, but it's definitely doable, and we can
chop them up. So what's the average length? 2 or 3 minutes? Like, a
minute, 30 seconds, or something. Under 2 minutes. Well, don't have an
attention span. Yeah, under 2 minutes is important.
371
01:06:27.660 --> 01:06:44.139
Council Chambers: Anyway, and they're really… they're nice, so… I can try
to share them with you through SharePoint, too. As with the other stuff
that also may or may not work. We have time to watch them all!
372
01:06:44.360 --> 01:06:49.400
Council Chambers: It's the second best thing I've seen on Medium, aside
from anonymized.
373
01:06:49.430 --> 01:07:06.980
Council Chambers: We're also grateful to have them. Yeah. But they're
really nice, and I'm excited for y'all to see them at sound. I will say,
even without sound, it's, it's… they're beautiful. You can tell that
they're really well-made. Yeah. It's awesome that they, like, one, two
per week.
374
01:07:06.980 --> 01:07:17.869
Council Chambers: just go take those interviews and see them in action,
like, there were a lot of touchpoints. Great, then we can talk about
public bonds.
375
01:07:17.870 --> 01:07:27.780
Council Chambers: Well, I guess the other… Oh, sorry, well, I was just
gonna say that there was, there are several, reports included in here,
which we don't usually discuss, but yeah, I just…
376
01:07:27.910 --> 01:07:31.180
Council Chambers: In terms of grants, it's also another way.
377
01:07:31.660 --> 01:07:33.650
Council Chambers: Some of the exciting things that…
378
01:07:34.150 --> 01:07:51.870
Council Chambers: Good information. No, there wasn't anything
particularly that highlighter stuff. Yeah. Yeah, I like the missing or
stuff, I love seeing the photos from L360, that's, like, the last thing I
can get on top of, yeah.
379
01:07:52.550 --> 01:07:56.340
Council Chambers: Yeah, Michelle, do you have any visual guide there?
380
01:07:56.950 --> 01:08:09.960
Council Chambers: This battery is so… I went up and saw it.
381
01:08:11.380 --> 01:08:14.930
Council Chambers: No, it wasn't fairly clear.
382
01:08:15.140 --> 01:08:20.010
Council Chambers: Like, he's really doing such wonderful work in the
community.
383
01:08:21.160 --> 01:08:34.629
Council Chambers: Very good! Okay, well then, should we talk about public
art? Sure. Always a good day to talk about public art, our public art
committee, and Joshua, anyone else on your Public Art Committee?
384
01:08:34.939 --> 01:08:43.909
Council Chambers: What do you got for us this month? You gotta work for
people in here. You're doing a lot of good work.
385
01:08:45.800 --> 01:08:53.419
Council Chambers: We worked on maintenance kits, and seriously led the
charge.
386
01:08:54.270 --> 01:09:14.069
Council Chambers: Yeah, it looks really good. I feel like we basically
have, identified the materials necessary to… for individual works in our
collection, and, thought it was…
387
01:09:14.859 --> 01:09:23.640
Council Chambers: That was neat and smart enough, the way it was put
together, and I think that referencing that original video,
388
01:09:24.240 --> 01:09:38.050
Council Chambers: We have a lot of Bronx outdoor stuff. I'll say they're
circle cleaning. Yeah, that was a really valuable riveting. Yeah. I was
just thinking, it's actually not, like, rare, like…
389
01:09:38.189 --> 01:10:03.110
Council Chambers: Yeah, sure, after Jerry Sudakawa, raced us with this
awesome bronze across the street, the apocalypse, we were like, hey, how
do we take care of this? And he goes, well, I'll just come to town and
give you
390
01:10:03.110 --> 01:10:07.570
Council Chambers: a demo, you want to bring some people out? So a few of
us from the Air Commission showed up. It was like.
391
01:10:08.340 --> 01:10:20.199
Council Chambers: March or something, so it was a little cooled to treat
bronze. Bronze wants to be treated in, like, hot weather, so we heat it
with a propane torch to absorb the wax, and…
392
01:10:20.200 --> 01:10:32.390
Council Chambers: straight with a gold credit card, how to remove tape,
like, literally, I've gone over and there have been birthday parties
where people tape up, like, happy birthday, Susie, and they're like, I'm
like, tape? I'm like, Ron's like, are you out of your mind? I don't say
that, I just think…
393
01:10:32.390 --> 01:10:43.420
Council Chambers: So yeah, it was just really great, and we did a video.
We had a student from JCS when I was teaching there. Part of her project
was to just do a video document, documentation of the process.
394
01:10:43.580 --> 01:10:54.580
Council Chambers: We even had a little video of all the stuff, some
turtle wax and WD-40, of course. WD-40 is good for everything. And,
different, you know, alcohol and whatnot. Anyway, it's part of our
record.
395
01:10:54.920 --> 01:11:05.169
Council Chambers: And I disagree that I led the charge, I think Katie led
the charge. So our idea was literally have, like, a box on the wall,
wherever maintenance is.
396
01:11:05.180 --> 01:11:25.010
Council Chambers: that says, this is this sculpture's stuff. Even if
things duplicate, just, like, have their own box. I mean, they're pretty
inexpensive, WD-40, isopropyl alcohol, old credit card, you know. Just
have it ready to go, and then match that up with the maintenance
schedule, so you're like, oh, it's… every 6 months, we go do the Salishi
Circle.
397
01:11:25.010 --> 01:11:39.660
Council Chambers: Then you pull the box down, and there's a link to the
video, or there's a little laminated instruction sheet, like… well, like
using this term, but idiot-proof it for anybody down the road, even if
they're not familiar with art, or just got hired on, maintenance crew,
they can just go pick it up.
398
01:11:39.910 --> 01:11:41.139
Council Chambers: Just make it happen.
399
01:11:42.810 --> 01:12:00.749
Council Chambers: behind and taking care of our art, so… Yeah, we did
that for every, piece of public art in our collection. A lot of them kind
of cross-referenced, you know, bronzes are kind of all treated the same.
A big reference document was the public art maintenance plan that we put
together with your sighting of that
400
01:12:00.750 --> 01:12:08.629
Council Chambers: national, accredited, I should say, referencing on how
to take care of each different,
401
01:12:08.660 --> 01:12:12.279
Council Chambers: type of medium. Each medium. Some of those…
402
01:12:13.050 --> 01:12:23.880
Council Chambers: We're a little tricky, like, some are a mixture of tile
and concrete or things, so we kind of mix those together, but a lot of
us, once you read through all the different,
403
01:12:23.980 --> 01:12:39.850
Council Chambers: Or just have to clean each one. It's pretty intuitive
as to what each needs. Also, on the sheet will be what not to do. Don't
pressure wash this or discuss what these pieces have, and then how to
repair, you know, maybe the next step.
404
01:12:41.190 --> 01:12:53.790
Council Chambers: Yeah, that's what I said, done. Congratulations. Yeah,
and maybe totally shady.
405
01:12:53.790 --> 01:13:18.579
Council Chambers: It did a great job. I was like, gosh. We were trying to
expense some of those components in 25, so hopefully… Right. Try that not
to be too expensive, but… Yeah, yeah. I think we may have missed the boat
on that, but it's okay. Yeah, it's only minimal.
406
01:13:18.580 --> 01:13:28.250
Council Chambers: Yeah, we'll look at it. But yes, and it's my job now to
take all the information that Joshua and Dan have compiled to, parks, the
way they have.
407
01:13:28.540 --> 01:13:37.170
Council Chambers: And whoever put together the original maintenance
plans, it's really great, yeah, it's really thorough, you know.
408
01:13:37.360 --> 01:13:38.600
Council Chambers: Which was the students.
409
01:13:38.610 --> 01:13:53.189
Council Chambers: Good graphics. Yeah. Spend a lot of time doing
Photoshop, right? Photoshop stuff. Yeah, awesome.
410
01:13:53.190 --> 01:14:16.130
Council Chambers: Yes, that would be a cool project to wrap up, and it
feels like it'll… it'll feel really good, I think, just to, yeah, have
that actual physical, like, we did it, it's here, you know. I guess the
next step would be a recommended frequency, get it on a calendar, and
have some follow-up to make sure Parks is doing it. We used to have
someone from Parks, I think they came to a meeting, and we had proposed
that we have a quarterly presence.
411
01:14:16.180 --> 01:14:21.929
Council Chambers: which is a one-time visit, but, you know, to have some
sort of… we're all about collaboration these days. Right, yeah.
412
01:14:23.670 --> 01:14:27.199
Council Chambers: The seawater is. Yeah.
413
01:14:28.420 --> 01:14:31.280
Council Chambers: Have a great merchandise.
414
01:14:31.920 --> 01:14:45.069
Council Chambers: Yeah, I just wanted to put that on there, that the… and
I may have mentioned this before, it just continues to move forward. The
factory marker has been cleaned and sealed, and it's, like…
415
01:14:45.070 --> 01:14:58.179
Council Chambers: Happily… this was the piece that was being ground down
by the dumpster union work. Yeah, all of us, all of our collective
memories. We're all on the same page, so it should… it's already an,
416
01:14:58.860 --> 01:15:06.550
Council Chambers: It's been cleaned, it's been cleaned, it's been sealed,
and it's ready to reinstall in Madison Street Park, and we,
417
01:15:07.230 --> 01:15:22.519
Council Chambers: parts are all ready to do it, and I had suggested that
they wait until the temporary whale, like, sculpture comes down, because
I think that that'll be… When does that come down? I thought it was
temporary. It is temporary. It's coming down next month, I think.
418
01:15:22.520 --> 01:15:34.000
Council Chambers: So, either in February or March. Is it a similar
location. Yeah, so I just, I think that that would just make it look
nicer thing, or whatever, but it'll happen at some point.
419
01:15:34.180 --> 01:15:41.200
Council Chambers: That'll happen soon. We could, you know, move some pay
around that, which I think will be nice. Was there a decision on, you
know, whether to anchor it?
420
01:15:41.300 --> 01:15:49.289
Council Chambers: Yeah, they have some kind of plan that sounded good. I
can't remember it off, but I feel like it did have something, but we
discussed it, and they…
421
01:15:50.080 --> 01:16:13.800
Council Chambers: Hasn't been stolen yet. Hasn't been stolen yet.
Apparently, yes, and they found that it already has, like, holes in the
plot. Yeah, that was why they usually put, like, rebar in. So you have to
be supportive of, like, rebar, but not, like, a plinth or… No, no, no,
the idea is to put it in, like, the way it was originally built. But it
was there now, yeah. No plinth 3. Yeah.
422
01:16:15.010 --> 01:16:18.909
Council Chambers: Yeah, that's it. Firm.
423
01:16:19.030 --> 01:16:33.040
Council Chambers: public art stuff for now. I do believe that there will
be quite a… possibly quite a bit of public art action this year,
particularly if this Creative District grant comes through that will be a
call for artists using
424
01:16:33.410 --> 01:16:58.369
Council Chambers: And, you know, we'll… we'll be sort of a whole
commissioned through our commission, which is, I think, pretty cool.
Well, as a member of the Public Art Committee, I feel like I can
comfortably state that our committee of two is not only eager to acquire
more members
425
01:16:58.480 --> 01:17:10.020
Council Chambers: But we are ready and ready to receive the direction of
our processes to establish an artist selection panel, and
426
01:17:10.160 --> 01:17:24.569
Council Chambers: A chunk of money set aside for a piece of public art
and get the whole ball rolling. It's absolutely an awesome thing for
anybody on this commission to be involved in, to select art that
theoretically will live beyond their lifetimes.
427
01:17:24.570 --> 01:17:32.899
Council Chambers: Finally, we're on the precipice of this happening.
Again, it's been over 10 years since our last call for learning, so we
are…
428
01:17:32.990 --> 01:17:51.109
Council Chambers: Excited? Excited? Anybody else want to be excited and
join in? I would do it. But public art committees were really fun.
Because public art is… I mean, it's really cool that we have this grant
program, but the public art collection is…
429
01:17:51.490 --> 01:18:04.260
Council Chambers: existing inventory that belongs to the City of Port
Hasan and all of its residents, and, is, like, there is no arts
commission without that public art. Like, we have it, we own it, and we
do…
430
01:18:04.650 --> 01:18:29.100
Council Chambers: We have relationships with it. Some of us love all of
it, so, you know, like, it's meant to evoke whatever in us, so, I love
the Public Art Commission. A question for the Public Art Committee this
year, a good time to ask it is now, is, what does the Public Art
Committee, see as the need for an update to the public art?
431
01:18:29.100 --> 01:18:41.230
Council Chambers: plan, which AP4 says that we update the public art plan
annually. We don't have to update the art plan annually. We can… AP4 is
our document. We get to choose what the policies and procedures are.
432
01:18:41.250 --> 01:18:49.200
Council Chambers: This isn't gonna sound. But, yeah, we didn't update the
public art plan last year, it was…
433
01:18:49.750 --> 01:19:02.639
Council Chambers: just a big accomplishment getting it approved last
year. Officially. So this year's a good time to think about, like, what
are the needs of that document. There are new… well, there are…
434
01:19:02.740 --> 01:19:14.729
Council Chambers: existing pieces of the collection that we've identified
that seem like we've come into the collection or be officially
recognized. So there'll be some updates in that regard, but,
435
01:19:14.730 --> 01:19:27.180
Council Chambers: This was a big focus of the last one, so if there's a
different focus you'd like to… or angle looking ahead, feel free to just…
Make sure things cross-reference accurately with 1% for the article.
436
01:19:27.890 --> 01:19:43.279
Council Chambers: So, is it correct, also, that the Public Art Committee
should have fewer than a quorum number so that we can move… so that's
going to be 4. And then, is this also the time to do appointments? To
those? To those, to that subcommittee? It would be a bad time to do it.
After elections?
437
01:19:43.320 --> 01:19:55.590
Council Chambers: Yeah, I think they're just kind of… I think they're
kind of standing until… unless there's a big change. We used to do it as,
like… Well, because we had a chair of the public art committee.
438
01:19:55.890 --> 01:19:58.409
Council Chambers: But I don't think we… do you?
439
01:19:58.650 --> 01:20:10.719
Council Chambers: Have a chair? No, we don't have a chair. Yeah, we coach
you. Okay, okay, great. We swap chairs here, so…
440
01:20:10.720 --> 01:20:32.640
Council Chambers: Just subcommittee appointments. My memory is we used to
have that be something that went in the record. Well, these are more,
like, work groups at the moment. Ongoing. They're, like, task-based at
the moment, and I think if we get to the point where they're more of,
like, a…
441
01:20:33.190 --> 01:20:45.369
Council Chambers: like a subcommittee, which is something like a slightly
different thing, then we would do that. Sounds like there's no way out.
But also, if you look at the February meeting,
442
01:20:45.630 --> 01:20:52.139
Council Chambers: It is dedicated to the art awards and to the public
art,
443
01:20:52.880 --> 01:21:04.029
Council Chambers: spam. Update. What's the, timeline on, like, the
applications that are in the pipeline?
444
01:21:04.310 --> 01:21:10.330
Council Chambers: Are they here in Mexico? They can be if we get the,
445
01:21:11.220 --> 01:21:15.280
Council Chambers: If we get the candidates on the consent agenda for
those.
446
01:21:15.730 --> 01:21:35.359
Council Chambers: I know that she was trying to… anyway, so… The next
meeting or the follow-up. So we should try and…
447
01:21:35.710 --> 01:22:00.570
Council Chambers: I kind of feel like, yeah, you might, maybe. I feel
like sometimes new commissioners need a minute to get settled. But yeah,
no, I think it's a good point, and I think it's also, like, a good point,
because it is, like.
448
01:22:00.960 --> 01:22:04.060
Council Chambers: a… route slightly.
449
01:22:04.250 --> 01:22:22.820
Council Chambers: going through the process and actually, and, like,
actually, you know, acquiring art and doing all the things it takes is,
like, it's a process, and… Yeah, yeah. And it might get to the point
where we're at, if we are doing a call, an actual call, and, you know,
into that part of it that we…
450
01:22:23.390 --> 01:22:41.990
Council Chambers: we do sort of have a more official subcommittee that
becomes something that has to be noticed in public meeting, and all that
kind of stuff. We kept minutes at our prior call. Yeah, yeah, so it might
be, because there is money involved. Yeah, exactly. Once we get to that
point, it might… there might be a shift. Like, I feel like right now,
this…
451
01:22:41.990 --> 01:22:45.740
Council Chambers: It's more important to sort of have these working
groups to get some of these things.
452
01:22:45.840 --> 01:22:55.879
Council Chambers: back on track, like, reimagining the wards, like,
getting, yeah, sort of like the post… anyway, that isn't necessarily,
like, they don't take the status quo forever.
453
01:22:56.420 --> 01:23:06.749
Council Chambers: I don't think it's actually technical. Well, I think
there'll be… I think the excitement and enthusiasm will come when there
is… I think that's what you're saying, is that, like, people will get
jazzed about, yeah, chipping in when there's, like.
454
01:23:06.750 --> 01:23:19.679
Council Chambers: Like, they can be, yeah, there's no tangible. More
exciting than anything. Yeah. A little mind-bound, there's a lot of
different things about it that make it a little, you know, yeah.
455
01:23:20.110 --> 01:23:25.320
Council Chambers: It's still important. Maintenance is great, isn't that
maintenance is super important. Call for new stuff.
456
01:23:25.590 --> 01:23:27.260
Council Chambers: host.
457
01:23:28.410 --> 01:23:29.950
Council Chambers: You'll have it.
458
01:23:30.590 --> 01:23:40.589
Council Chambers: You guys are top dogs. Yeah, yeah. Well, I really would
not want…
459
01:23:40.590 --> 01:23:51.799
Council Chambers: I mean, I know, like, time is valuable, but we have
time, which is kind of a rarity for us to have excess time. We're down to
the end of our agenda, really.
460
01:23:52.240 --> 01:24:03.389
Council Chambers: And we have about half an hour working today. So, first
of all, kudos to us. But…
461
01:24:05.030 --> 01:24:06.930
Council Chambers: what topic…
462
01:24:07.730 --> 01:24:17.689
Council Chambers: In light of the fact that next meeting focus is really
around the arts awards selection, and also a bit about public art,
463
01:24:18.920 --> 01:24:22.600
Council Chambers: Is anyone feeling particularly…
464
01:24:25.260 --> 01:24:41.290
Council Chambers: I don't know, sure about how we should spend this last,
like, 20 minutes, or… we can still break a little early, but we should…
we should stick around, because we'll take advantage of the time to catch
up. I just had a thought about the research that I didn't want to throw
out earlier, but I just think that, like.
465
01:24:41.440 --> 01:24:58.099
Council Chambers: this is just my individual thought process around the
rubric, but I just think that, like, the partnership tool works will be
more successful if we actually are more critical during using the rubric.
I was just thinking, like.
466
01:24:58.270 --> 01:25:03.139
Council Chambers: I'm in a really, like, attempt to avoid, like, a, like…
467
01:25:03.140 --> 01:25:28.039
Council Chambers: you know, certainly good 100 times in a row, just being
like, everybody's good, because it's like, there's kind of no point to,
like, having the awards if we're just gonna, like, give every… we should
just have a party, you know what I mean? But, like, I don't know, just in
the spirit of, like, the conversation we've had around, like, presenting
an award that is, like, uniquely tied to the city's identity and, like,
what's occurred during these
468
01:25:28.040 --> 01:25:53.010
Council Chambers: here within the arts, like, I just feel like we should
do… we should give the respect to the process we're trying to develop by,
like, actually, like, you know, putting time into the review of
submissions and, like, and be relatively critical and, you know, as
adults. So, that's just my… I really appreciate you saying that. Yeah, go
ahead. And I think one thing that does help with that is
469
01:25:53.010 --> 01:26:17.500
Council Chambers: to consider the different categories, because I may
think an artist is great, and they're fabulous, you know, and I love what
they do, but do they fall into that category? Like, how does it, you
know, I'm forgetting all the different ones, but, like, impact, community
impact is a big one. And just really considering that, because there are
some artists out there that a lot of the community knows, but their
impact just may not be as great, and so just really to get
470
01:26:17.580 --> 01:26:19.039
Council Chambers: A little more, yeah.
471
01:26:21.870 --> 01:26:33.509
Council Chambers: I have a question. It sounds like some people have
already done this homework? Do, like, this… I mean, I would love to have
these supportive docs, too. Like, if people are feeling, like.
472
01:26:33.670 --> 01:26:57.450
Council Chambers: I can do this, you know, the sooner, the better would
make my life easier. So, I think I said end… I can't even remember if I…
At least the end of the month. Put a date, yeah. Yeah, I think I said… I
think I said end of the month, but I would say end of the month or sooner
would be awesome. Yeah. Yeah, just to say, it sounds like people are kind
of on it, which I super appreciate, but it's helpful, so…
473
01:26:57.450 --> 01:26:59.530
Council Chambers: Yeah, one more time.
474
01:26:59.530 --> 01:27:03.619
Council Chambers: Okay, well, does anyone, in light of that, want to…
475
01:27:03.990 --> 01:27:11.079
Council Chambers: Does anyone who has completed the process want to speak
to their experience, or how they approached it?
476
01:27:11.770 --> 01:27:24.880
Council Chambers: I really thought that community impact would be a
bigger chunk than it is. You know, the second highest is of artistic
excellence, but as you said…
477
01:27:24.880 --> 01:27:31.899
Council Chambers: Even if it's really close to artistic excellence.
478
01:27:31.900 --> 01:27:35.390
Council Chambers: And that, you know, I don't really want to judge on…
479
01:27:35.740 --> 01:27:48.019
Council Chambers: the art itself, because it's really more about how that
art interacts with our community, whether it's even high-quality or low
quality. Like, it could be low-quality art, but if it's involving youth.
480
01:27:48.330 --> 01:27:51.830
Council Chambers: That's a really big deal for me.
481
01:27:51.890 --> 01:27:55.020
Council Chambers: quality at the output or not, so…
482
01:27:55.080 --> 01:28:17.659
Council Chambers: That was… that was a little odd for me to actually
assign points to that, because community impact should be, like, half of
the value. I kind of like that… that comment, based on the idea of us,
like, as individual counselors bringing that mentality to it. I think
that's, like, why the project can actually work, because, like, obviously
you're saying your predisposition is to…
483
01:28:17.660 --> 01:28:24.970
Council Chambers: I feel that community impact is, like, really, really
high value to the way that you'll vote.
484
01:28:24.970 --> 01:28:48.469
Council Chambers: Which, I think that's cool. I mean, that, to me,
actually just sort of, like, calls out, like, the, like, variation that
will go into the voting, and that's what's actually interesting, you
know? Youth is big for me. Yeah. A volunteer versus someone who's paid
for their position, that's really big for me. Yeah. So if you're
volunteering and helping kids, you're talking about this, yeah. I wanted
to highlight, I just wanted to pull up the,
485
01:28:49.170 --> 01:28:57.170
Council Chambers: we don't… it may not be the bottom part, so it's really
the top piece of this. It's the scoring rubric that sort of explains
486
01:28:57.220 --> 01:29:15.949
Council Chambers: like, what is meant by artistic excellence or community
impact, and this was helpful for me. I, when I was doing mine, alignment
with civic values, like, I remember committing it, I was like, wait, what
did you mean? So, like, and that is…
487
01:29:16.000 --> 01:29:20.229
Council Chambers: That's a fair thing, because this is…
488
01:29:21.630 --> 01:29:30.100
Council Chambers: It's not a grant award, but it is an award. So, the
nomination materials, in my opinion, this is, again, maybe my personal
bend.
489
01:29:30.150 --> 01:29:41.850
Council Chambers: Not to be, like, the administrator, but, like, you
know, we did ask for complete nominations that had really… so if the
depth of the nomination just wasn't there, like.
490
01:29:41.920 --> 01:29:54.409
Council Chambers: We… I mean, that's… I'm sorry for that nominee, but we
did ask in the… explicitly in the material, please consult with the
nominee so that it's a very thorough nomination. So if that person didn't
do, you know…
491
01:29:55.130 --> 01:30:02.790
Council Chambers: they're gonna have another opportunity next year,
perhaps. So, yeah, I just wanted to highlight that that… this… this…
492
01:30:02.790 --> 01:30:20.000
Council Chambers: explainer is in your meeting packet, and it might just
be helpful to have that out while you're looking at this. It is helpful,
because I looked at it, I saw that 50% is community impact and civic
values, which kind of combined does make up half, so I can have applied
that through my own land.
493
01:30:23.980 --> 01:30:28.029
Council Chambers: The other thing that might be, just because, like, you
were…
494
01:30:28.050 --> 01:30:52.980
Council Chambers: using this time to go over, just because it might save,
like, a meeting later, or whatever it would be, to talk a little bit
about the ceremony itself, and, like, what people want that to look like,
and also maybe a little bit about any kind of, like, promotions that we
want to do in advance. Something I will mention, though, I don't know if
it's, like, if y'all would want to do this or not, and it would
495
01:30:53.710 --> 01:31:13.509
Council Chambers: Well, I guess you have this, you have the, you know,
the budget within the awards buckling, which is pretty healthy. The
leader runs a special in January where you can get a full-page ad for a
half-page price, which is $1,320, I believe.
496
01:31:13.630 --> 01:31:22.660
Council Chambers: So usually a full-page link in the meter is, like, 20,
almost $2,500, and, if…
497
01:31:22.830 --> 01:31:36.260
Council Chambers: PTAC wanted to do a big… and you don't have to run it
in January, you just have to buy it in January, and you can schedule it
any time throughout the year. So if PTAC wanted to do a big, splashy,
like, congratulations to our winners, and have a whole full-page ad.
498
01:31:36.470 --> 01:31:43.760
Council Chambers: in the leader, that would be something that… or, I
mean, I have to use your gospel, whatever, you know, the last, last,
499
01:31:44.660 --> 01:31:53.710
Council Chambers: That's just an opportunity that exists right now that
wouldn't exist in a couple of weeks, so that's just something to think
about. And…
500
01:31:53.850 --> 01:32:00.939
Council Chambers: Oh, I guess we'll have to get the fine as well. Yeah,
that's your thing. But that's,
501
01:32:01.790 --> 01:32:03.900
Council Chambers: I don't know if that could happen.
502
01:32:04.080 --> 01:32:14.729
Council Chambers: Or if it was just like, no, let's go ahead and do,
like, kind of a quarter page, like we've been doing, which are a little
more affordable, like, for the… that's what the commission did for the
503
01:32:15.080 --> 01:32:20.509
Council Chambers: A poet laureate, and for the… just, like, nomination
pieces.
504
01:32:20.540 --> 01:32:38.799
Council Chambers: Something like that. Anyway, it'd be good, because that
would be something you could get off to pretty quickly, so thinking about
that might be worth talking about. I think the ceremony itself is really
where the rubber meets the road as far as our engagement with the
community. We are one time to have the pulpit to address more
505
01:32:39.650 --> 01:32:55.029
Council Chambers: people's attentions at one time. Well, maybe this page
spread as well, but live. And so, you know, maybe we should be talking
about a bullet point list of, like, points that our MC should miss, you
know, like, that's an opportunity
506
01:32:55.030 --> 01:33:17.859
Council Chambers: maybe touch on who we are, what we do, maybe even
mention what we don't do or didn't do, you know? Like, this is our chance
to, like, tell people who we are, what you can count on moving forward.
In prior ceremonies, we've given a shout-out to the individual
commissioners. I don't think that's necessary, because it shouldn't be
about us, it should be about these awardees, but it is an opportunity to
507
01:33:17.860 --> 01:33:19.830
Council Chambers: You know…
508
01:33:20.350 --> 01:33:40.960
Council Chambers: Yeah, yeah, what we do, and make sure that we know that
we have a budget, where we, allow cash for projects, bring us your
projects, here's the website, and we can find it, if you can't find it,
it's on the city website, you know, and we know who our MC's gonna be?
It's not even me.
509
01:33:41.080 --> 01:33:46.029
Council Chambers: Yeah, a lot going on in February.
510
01:33:46.420 --> 01:34:09.910
Council Chambers: We should probably figure that out. Yeah, does anybody
have anyone in mind? The MC for Jefferson Landfest this year, after last
year was really wonderful, so I got her contact information from Rick,
because I understand that she's somewhat in the community.
511
01:34:09.910 --> 01:34:13.130
Council Chambers: But she was great.
512
01:34:13.690 --> 01:34:29.220
Council Chambers: And then there's a couple others, hopefully, in the
community, who are afraid. Well, whoever it is, they should probably just
read from a script. We prepare it. I think it might be, I mean, I don't
know if the person you're talking about after this.
513
01:34:29.270 --> 01:34:32.030
Council Chambers: Like, there's been…
514
01:34:32.050 --> 01:34:52.090
Council Chambers: plenty of, like, you know, performing artists and
theater artists that have PTAC grants, right? So, like, looking at that…
you know, obviously those… and being on stage or whatever, it could be
cool to think about somebody at one of those groups or funners people to
do it.
515
01:34:52.870 --> 01:35:09.630
Council Chambers: So, that's another… that's a thought I have. Will the
compilation video be ready by that date? I believe it should know. I
think those things are gonna be ready by the end of the month. So that
should be featured in my compilation video, because…
516
01:35:09.630 --> 01:35:13.729
Council Chambers: I'm gonna be honest with you after this.
517
01:35:14.460 --> 01:35:17.959
Council Chambers: Yeah, we can add it.
518
01:35:18.140 --> 01:35:23.050
Council Chambers: Like, go ahead, Jeff. Oh, I just, I agree. I think that
that's enough.
519
01:35:23.060 --> 01:35:37.879
Council Chambers: Smart comment. Yeah, I think that we should, like,
because I just, I just, I know in my, personal experience, like, I tell
people that I'm on the Fort Talent Arts Commission, and I tell people
that have really been Fort Talent for, like.
520
01:35:37.880 --> 01:36:02.559
Council Chambers: 10 years, or went to high school here, and they're
like, oh, well, I don't even really know we had that, or like, what? So I
do think it might be any opportunity to, like… That's right. Yeah, just a
little bit. It's just, you know, it is kind of surprising. I mean, I
guess I wouldn't, you know, just wondering what you said, I don't know. I
could do that. I could try it out and talk about that. But I don't think
I'm the best fit to end the evening.
521
01:36:02.560 --> 01:36:11.619
Council Chambers: Yeah, yeah, I'd be happy to… Oh, a professional stage
person would be awesome. As long as they're just given a, you know, a
wing it, you gotta give them a script.
522
01:36:11.710 --> 01:36:23.580
Council Chambers: There's also been talk about having, like, somebody…
some kind of, you know, music or some kind of performer in the beginning,
so… and I don't think that that's been identified either, so that's
something we can think about as well.
523
01:36:23.850 --> 01:36:24.890
Council Chambers: Huh.
524
01:36:25.100 --> 01:36:26.969
Council Chambers: We've been an ASL person?
525
01:36:28.280 --> 01:36:32.290
Council Chambers: You know what you said, maybe? Probably, yeah?
526
01:36:33.380 --> 01:36:39.509
Council Chambers: can ask, Denise about. There's also, like, an ASL club
in town, there's a…
527
01:36:39.820 --> 01:36:45.630
Council Chambers: That'd be tough. Yeah. That'd be… Yeah, you're right.
528
01:36:45.850 --> 01:36:52.670
Council Chambers: Especially that was brought up in this last year. Yeah,
it would be cool to have,
529
01:36:53.450 --> 01:36:55.140
Council Chambers: I'll have to look.
530
01:36:55.490 --> 01:37:15.430
Council Chambers: like, what's the… like, the brand names the nominees
perform? Like, you know, as far as, like, whether we ask nominees to
perform, or, or, you know, like, let them enjoy the… or, I guess, make
the opportunity available. Simon, do you have any input on that as a
performer?
531
01:37:17.050 --> 01:37:31.670
Council Chambers: Yeah, or, yeah, like, should we invite them to? Should
we… or give the option, or, if it's a performing arts medium, so they
could opt out, I guess if they wanted to.
532
01:37:32.640 --> 01:37:36.500
Council Chambers: I mean, not everybody's a performer, it's not. Yeah.
Yeah.
533
01:37:37.860 --> 01:37:40.829
Council Chambers: Perfect. It'd be a good opportunity.
534
01:37:41.380 --> 01:37:48.599
Council Chambers: If it was me, I wouldn't want to. You wouldn't? I
would. Oh, okay.
535
01:37:49.170 --> 01:37:52.820
Council Chambers: I would just think that makes my comfort more alive for
you.
536
01:37:54.330 --> 01:38:00.550
Council Chambers: Performance is nice. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
537
01:38:02.160 --> 01:38:03.749
Council Chambers: Would you, would…
538
01:38:04.350 --> 01:38:13.280
Council Chambers: You… would y'all want to ask the nominators to
introduce the nominees? Like, if someone nominated, someone might have a…
539
01:38:13.510 --> 01:38:16.600
Council Chambers: You know what I mean?
540
01:38:16.890 --> 01:38:35.319
Council Chambers: Yeah, right. So the… maybe we should just, like,
quickly review the format for the last year's, whatever, you know,
they're different, they're not intended to be specific, but just, like,
the context.
541
01:38:36.070 --> 01:38:37.240
Council Chambers: I love you.
542
01:38:38.330 --> 01:38:45.529
Council Chambers: What's the window of time we should start there? Like,
what do we have to do? This is the presentation part.
543
01:38:45.670 --> 01:39:08.570
Council Chambers: There's a Pandre over there, people are gonna drift,
right? That's right. So I think we kind of did that. We had, like, we
allowed for the first 20, 30 minutes, I think, was basically, like, get
the people in the door, make some mango, find your seats, enjoy a little
snack. We had, Kristen and Anna Smith playing music, right?
544
01:39:09.760 --> 01:39:34.730
Council Chambers: We had a little immersive art experience in the back,
like, all this sort of concentric circles, remember? Yep. That big
canvas? Yep. Tico had that? That's right. So there was some kind of,
like, interactive component that was also very family or kids.
545
01:39:34.730 --> 01:39:39.549
Council Chambers: friendly, snacks. Super easy to do, snacks.
546
01:39:39.550 --> 01:39:47.930
Council Chambers: So yeah, it did have a little bit of time in the
program for people to arrive, settle in, get oriented. Then the program
began with…
547
01:39:47.980 --> 01:39:52.100
Council Chambers: Lindsey and I gave a little speech.
548
01:39:52.920 --> 01:39:57.610
Council Chambers: We did ask the nominees to read…
549
01:39:58.560 --> 01:40:01.820
Council Chambers: Alright, we have the nominees read the nominations?
550
01:40:02.020 --> 01:40:08.330
Council Chambers: Which were long, yeah. A lot of those nominations were
longer than in,
551
01:40:08.920 --> 01:40:28.170
Council Chambers: So I think that might be why you're asking that, too,
because it was a little… and then, there was a moment where the mayor did
his proclamation. Yep. Did the city manager talk? Did we ask? No, he did
not. He really defers to council a lot.
552
01:40:28.260 --> 01:40:42.100
Council Chambers: spoke, though. It's usually a mayoral… Yeah, during the
proclamation. Press is there. Yeah. It happened really quickly, to be
honest. But that's why…
553
01:40:42.410 --> 01:40:56.910
Council Chambers: You know, we have more time, we have a budget, I mean,
that was the other thing. Proclamations are free! Yeah. Fairgrounds.
554
01:40:57.050 --> 01:41:01.900
Council Chambers: So, out in the big rooms? Yeah, you know, in the big
areas. Okay, okay.
555
01:41:02.420 --> 01:41:11.740
Council Chambers: So, it could be those… each of those things that we
just talked about could be broken up by a performance of some kind, you
know, or one of the videos, or…
556
01:41:11.990 --> 01:41:14.140
Council Chambers: No, proclamation for fun.
557
01:41:14.730 --> 01:41:25.099
Council Chambers: You know who's a really good MC? He's loud and
engaging, Mark Weinblad.
558
01:41:25.100 --> 01:41:39.250
Council Chambers: be awesome. But his OSHA program is one of the
nominees. His name's not mentioned, I don't think, but the program
itself… Yeah, okay. Ordrea Dupree is also in the gradebook form, so…
559
01:41:42.160 --> 01:41:56.500
Council Chambers: I'm going to Mark House after this. What are you doing
on the 27th? Yeah. We really also want all nominees to attend, regardless
of outcome, because that's, again, part of this, like.
560
01:41:56.500 --> 01:42:06.949
Council Chambers: creating a spirit of… Yeah. I don't see there being a
conflict if he were to… he could even say something funny about that. Oh,
no, no. I don't know, that choice is already made, so I guess,
influencing. Right.
561
01:42:10.530 --> 01:42:11.890
Council Chambers: Yeah.
562
01:42:12.020 --> 01:42:13.740
Council Chambers: Any other thoughts about them?
563
01:42:13.870 --> 01:42:16.959
Council Chambers: What would make a planned event like this?
564
01:42:18.240 --> 01:42:32.479
Council Chambers: So, I haven't, like, I don't, you know, I don't know
that any… some of the nominees probably don't know the amount, right? You
know, or it's not necessarily, like,
565
01:42:32.850 --> 01:42:51.409
Council Chambers: Would the commission like me to send an email being
like, you've been nominated? Like, save the date from this thing? Yeah.
We used to call people and just tell them that we've got you. Like, hey!
We'd each get, like, a couple names. Yeah. Yeah. It was fun. Yeah.
566
01:42:51.440 --> 01:42:57.079
Council Chambers: I mean, we can do it that way, too. I'm happy to, like,
divide it out if people want to do personal outreach. Okay.
567
01:42:57.150 --> 01:43:09.490
Council Chambers: And the nominators. Okay, I mean, they should know,
because they saw the… I mean, we had the date of, like, after they
submitted, it said, please send the data.
568
01:43:09.720 --> 01:43:19.979
Council Chambers: Okay, I will do that. Alright, we're on it. Maybe
encourage them to bring friends, yeah, maybe, yeah.
569
01:43:25.280 --> 01:43:50.219
Council Chambers: One of your areas of artistic focus is sartorial in
nature, so I… I think it is nice in events like this, where there's a
board or a commission presenting something, for there to be uniformity
among… as a matter of presentation, and we did
570
01:43:50.220 --> 01:44:04.200
Council Chambers: say last year, like, please, you know, dress in your,
like, artsy vest or something, so… Yeah! But it's… as a person who works
in events and the planning world, like.
571
01:44:04.310 --> 01:44:09.900
Council Chambers: It's a thing in 2025 to 2026 now, to send, like,
572
01:44:09.980 --> 01:44:23.370
Council Chambers: address code mood board, so… All of them up, yeah,
right.
573
01:44:23.370 --> 01:44:48.100
Council Chambers: But if we could just even pick a color, like navy blue,
you know, like, and kind of orient around something like that. It's not
Pantone's color of the year. There's probably no better way to have a
lower turnout than to have a dress… But for us, it would be cool. Yeah.
574
01:44:48.100 --> 01:45:10.370
Council Chambers: We're exactly what we're wearing now. Okay, well, feel
free to brainstorm on it. I'm just gonna dress myself. I'd be happy to…
Right, exactly. I like any excuse to dress up. For advertising, I just
wanted to mention theater. That could be…
575
01:45:10.370 --> 01:45:22.240
Council Chambers: I just looked it up. It's 3 months for $1,000. Wow.
And, no answer.
576
01:45:22.690 --> 01:45:40.379
Council Chambers: Yeah, it's on the, advertising on the Rose and Rosebud
Cinema. Advertising is available for all shows in Rose and Rosebud,
including matinees and evenings. Ad slides rotate for 30 minutes before
each show. Each ad is rotated up to 3 to 6 times before the film starts.
577
01:45:40.430 --> 01:45:42.980
Council Chambers: For 10 seconds.
578
01:45:45.880 --> 01:45:50.669
Council Chambers: The plan can be set up to be paid monthly or all up
front, and…
579
01:45:51.020 --> 01:46:09.620
Council Chambers: one image repeated up to four to six times, or two
images repeated two to three times. So, it's, like, a pretty good value.
Yeah. That's what I'm hearing. As far as advertising costs are concerned.
And it is a lot of people. Preaching to the choir there, too. Our
audience, too, has a kind of a direct overlap.
580
01:46:09.620 --> 01:46:14.169
Council Chambers: So, I'm interested. Sports are great theater, too.
Yeah, right, yeah.
581
01:46:14.170 --> 01:46:25.080
Council Chambers: I looked at the ropes last night, and all the ads were
really good. Well, they were, like, bright, and colorful, and fun and
dynamic, and it was… it's always cool to see, like.
582
01:46:26.520 --> 01:46:32.840
Council Chambers: Someone you know? Yeah, yeah.
583
01:46:33.480 --> 01:46:38.829
Council Chambers: Good. And there's videos, too. Up to 50 weeks, I think
it's $500.
584
01:46:40.880 --> 01:46:48.920
Council Chambers: Wow. If we wanted to play our video in bed, you guys,
we can think a lot. $2,000 for a 60-second clip.
585
01:46:51.260 --> 01:47:01.310
Council Chambers: Like, in addition to the leader, or kind of, maybe it's
done in… Yeah, or, yeah.
586
01:47:01.490 --> 01:47:10.650
Council Chambers: Before taking the plunge, could we ask, like, towards
me what her head count is, like, to get a baseline of what we could
expect, or should we just use our own?
587
01:47:11.050 --> 01:47:16.709
Council Chambers: They have audience… their estimates are 4,000 to 7,000
people per month.
588
01:47:17.490 --> 01:47:26.909
Council Chambers: Pretty good for town. A lot of those are repeat
customers. That's where advertising is most effective.
589
01:47:27.800 --> 01:47:43.419
Council Chambers: So, I have a couple of… I'm asking me a question, maybe
better after a journey? I don't know. I mean, they're loosely… public
arts, really. Yeah. So I don't know what's appropriate.
590
01:47:44.270 --> 01:48:09.150
Council Chambers: Go for it, okay, go for it. So, I'm gonna plug the
Opeppo play, because it's happening, my kiddo's in it, tomorrow at the
high school, 6 p.m, and Saturday at 1. The Key City writes this play,
goes in, and, and they take all the information from it at the end of the
week. So, they also involve more community members, and I think it's
591
01:48:09.150 --> 01:48:13.969
Council Chambers: really cool how that's happening, and, like, support,
more theater getting into
592
01:48:13.970 --> 01:48:26.399
Council Chambers: the greater community because of their practices. And,
and the other thing I have a question about is that at the last OPEPO
parent meeting, it was at the Rec Center. A lot of us utilize the Rec
Center.
593
01:48:26.510 --> 01:48:34.399
Council Chambers: We just had our costume-making party there. You know,
it sports families, but the arts also in different ways, I think, and…
594
01:48:34.450 --> 01:48:51.830
Council Chambers: And yeah, along with other things. I'm curious about
where that is being discussed at the… where to get information about
that, or where… yeah. It's a county-owned resource, so… And is that
coming into the city conversation?
595
01:48:52.350 --> 01:48:58.130
Council Chambers: At all? There was some conversation about it, is my
understanding, and then…
596
01:49:00.350 --> 01:49:18.750
Council Chambers: At this point, the county, you know, is keeping it
open, and I believe what they have is a line item in their 2026 budget
that includes the idea that there will be private philanthropy that will
go towards keeping the rec center open, because when the rec center was
threatened to close, apparently a bunch of people reached out and were
like.
597
01:49:18.750 --> 01:49:43.700
Council Chambers: I would give you money to keep the rack set open. So,
that's… that's just my personal understanding of the conversation, and I
think that that's where it is at this point. So, you know, you could
reach out to the county directly to find out more. Thank you.
Philanthropic anonymizers. Yeah. And you're… yeah, you're Peppa. Yeah,
and I can connect you with somebody who would
598
01:49:43.700 --> 01:50:06.999
Council Chambers: be a good person to talk to about Patrick. You reminded
me, in our last 5-10 minutes, 7 minutes, let's do a quick roundtable,
like, art news around your neck of the woods. So, Opepo, that's exciting.
Simon, do you have any art news around your world at events coming up, or
anything? We have a sign workshop going in the studio right now, starting
in
599
01:50:07.000 --> 01:50:12.180
Council Chambers: And then again on Sunday, I got called back here.
600
01:50:12.370 --> 01:50:20.949
Council Chambers: He's a Berkeley guy, a Berkeley College of Music,
teaching, melodies. Cool.
601
01:50:21.420 --> 01:50:24.760
Council Chambers: I mean, otherwise, we just have recording clients at
the studio.
602
01:50:25.020 --> 01:50:29.680
Council Chambers: And, a show here on January the 28th, taking any candy.
603
01:50:30.170 --> 01:50:33.330
Council Chambers: It's a new song out of Nashville, really unique.
604
01:50:33.890 --> 01:50:41.179
Council Chambers: I'm personally working on an album, which is coming out
this spring, and heading to tour.
605
01:50:41.610 --> 01:50:47.230
Council Chambers: If, it still exists in Greenland in March.
606
01:50:47.620 --> 01:51:03.509
Council Chambers: No, I'm from Greenland, so this is very much on my
mind. Yeah, I bet. And, yeah, so that's… that's kind of…
607
01:51:05.310 --> 01:51:17.560
Council Chambers: That's it for me. Yeah, I got a journal and a wallet
corner off my website this last week. I would like to yield the rest of
my time to give a shout out to my friend Max Grover, who had his
608
01:51:17.560 --> 01:51:42.500
Council Chambers: annual birthday party at the Rose this week. He hires
the old place out, finds all of his friends, and this year's film was
Vertigo, and he announced that because it's filmed in San Francisco, and
he used to live there, he's got a retrospective at his gallery over here
from his days in San Francisco from decades ago. So, head on over to the
Grover Gallery.
609
01:51:42.500 --> 01:51:45.080
Council Chambers: Check it out. Okay.
610
01:51:45.080 --> 01:52:02.849
Council Chambers: I don't really know. I'm taking a class on Saturday. At
Fit River. With brushed glass. Okay.
611
01:52:03.030 --> 01:52:09.860
Council Chambers: I've traveled a lot over the holidays.
612
01:52:09.980 --> 01:52:27.050
Council Chambers: It's been dark, it's dark, right?
613
01:52:27.050 --> 01:52:50.210
Council Chambers: Northwind Art has a bunch of new classes listed that
are under $100, so there's a lot more affordable options cropping up,
which is exciting. The Port Housing Writers Conference registration is
now open, if anyone would like to join me in the summer, let me know. I'm
a regular attendee. If you're curious about the Writers' Conference, I'm
a good person to ask about what the experience is like.
614
01:52:50.210 --> 01:52:58.110
Council Chambers: Especially the experience as a local, because it's
different than the general experience. Many people travel in for it.
