This behavior causes confusion, sows doubt, and allows officials to maintain control and avoid accountability. 61 Examples of government gaslighting • Contradicting court rulings: In one instance, after a judge granted new rights to homeless people, city r employees were accused of spreading Mmisinformation to the w. homelessmormunNty that the court order was untrue.`ihe flyers being distributed were authored by lawyers from the ACLU, the group that won the case, confirming the legitimacy of he information -4- , LA, w, . 0 Blaming and punishingi " i Instead of addressing systemic causes of poverty housing , .` g shortages, g governments often criminalize homelessness through ordinances that restrict where unhoused people can exist or fine them excessively. Critics call this a punishment bureaucracy that is expensive and ineffective. • Mismanaging funds: Accusations have been made against officials regarding the masnmrig and waste of billions of dollars intended for homeless services. For example, a federal investigation in Los Angeles County sought to account for millions of dollars that had allegedly disappeared from homeless spending budgets. Overstating successful outcomes: Following encampment crackdowns in California, reports emerged that billions of dollars were spent to move tens of thousands of people, yet housed only a handful. When officials frame such actions as successes, it can be seen as gaslighting, especially to those directly impacted. • Using compassionate words to justify harmful policies: Governments can frame tough new policies as being in the best interest of unhoused individuals. An example is the rhetoric used around new laws that make it easier to forcibly remove or institutionalize homeless people, even though critics argue these are ineffective and ignore the high cost of housing.
