DRAFT FOR DISCUSSION
City of Port Townsend Arts Commission Mission Statement
The Arts Commission's mission as an appointed City Commission is to facilitate public arts
programs that enhance the cultural life of community residents.
Overview
This document is a flexible summary of the annual approach to PTAC meetings in 2025 and the
st
development of the PTAC budget. PTAC meets on 1 Thursdays, from 3:00-5:00PM. The development of
the PTAC budget is part of the development of the City of Port Townsend budget, and resides in the
General Fund, as approved by City Council each year. This process begins nearly six months before the
start of the subsequent year and includes state-mandated statutory milestones and deadlines.
1. January – Program Planning Part 1: Grant Criteria and Poet Laureate
Discussion of grant program specifics, including application, criteria, and any marketing or public
education opportunities. Discussion of Poet Laureate Program and jury process for 2026-2027.
2. February – Program Planning Part 2: Annual Arts Awards and Public Art
Discussion of Arts Awards with roles and deadlines. Discussion of agency partners and arts
connections, including Creative District and Arts & Culture Plan, and Public Art maintenance
planning and coordination with City staff. Invitation to Public Works Director to discuss possible
1% eligible projects in 6-year Capital Facilities Plan.
3. March – Quarterly Grant Funding
4. April – Communications and Poet Laureate Jury.
PTAC engages in a discussion of City communications and how to participate in covering funded
events, updating the website, and promoting the work of PTAC. Finalize Poet Laureate jury
selection and RFP for Poet Laureate nominations.
5. May – Workplan Strategic Session.
PTAC receives a call from Mayor/City Manager to PTAC (and all City advisory boards) for
workplan items and preliminary budget request. PTAC reviews progress on the 2025 workplan,
strategizes on multi-year initiatives and the 2026 workplan, and considers priorities for next
fiscal year in order to suggest a preliminary PTAC workplan.
6. June – Quarterly Grant Funding
7. July – Mid Year Review and Budget Strategic Session
PTAC discusses all 2025 programs and makes mid-year assessments. Discussion on budget to
pair with workplan and submits a recommendation to staff and City Council in advance of a
decision on the preliminary City budget. (City Council may choose to approve/incorporate or
may send the recommendation back to PTAC for further discussion). Poet Laureate jury process
and selection occurs in this time frame.
8. August – TBD
9. September – Quarterly Grant Funding
10. October – TBD
11. November – TBD
12. December – Annual Review. PTAC reviews the 2025 workplan, reviews 2025 granting data and
budget expenditures, plans annual meeting schedule and 2026 grant deadlines, and ties up
loose ends in discussion.

indoor and outdoor productions is no longer viable due to the administrative changes there.)

th
Our summer 2025 production, Saltfire’s 4 summer outdoor show, will be Ken Ludwig’s Sherwood, The
Adventures of Robin Hood. The informal, picnic-on-the-lawn outdoor setting makes live theatre very
accessible and amplifies the excitement of the swashbuckling nature of this script. Fridays, Saturdays,
and Sundays, Aug. 8-10 and 15-17 are confirmed for Finn River Farm and Cidery. For the final weekend
of performances, Saltfire is in negotiations with both Port Townsend’s Camas Prairie Park, which has
expressed an interest in hosting a show with Saltfire, and with Fort Worden State Park for Littlefield
Green. Both venues offer ADA accessible restrooms near the potential performance areas.
Saltfire Theatre PTAC Grant Application 1
May 20, 2025
From Sherwood’s director, Erik Van Beuzekom, the former co-artistic director at the paradise theater
school (Chimacum); a certified member of Dueling Arts International, a stage fighting society; and the
fight choreographer for Saltfire’s production of Macbeth in January-February 2025:
“Sherwood is a tale that has been told many times. Our take is a comedic version that
encompasses ages from 12-80, teaching archery, broadsword, quarterstaff, and unarmed
combat that is a two hour thrill ride of laughs, wit and sparring that audiences of all ages will
love. We aim to tell a story about standing up to bullying, and how love and community are
worth fighting for. These are messages all the more critical today: working together,
recognizing and acting upon convictions, bullying leads to oppression, and love is a bond that
lifts people up and transcends time.”
Sherwood offers about 30 roles, or a minimum of eight actors with double casting. Typically all actors
are Jefferson County residents, with a production team of ten or more artists collaborating behind the
scenes to bring the production to life. Recent casts for Saltfire shows have ranged in age from 10 to 90.
For each production, about half of the team is new to Saltfire in the past year. Auditions for this
production will be held May 28-30, so the final mix of ages and new team members will not be known
until after those dates.
We offer Pay-what-you-wish tickets for every performance, and hold open auditions for every show.
Saltfire Theatre, a relatively new community-based company, encourages diversity and community in all
shows. We want the process of creating and experiencing theatre to provide joy for not only the
audience but also the people involved in the show and for the entire community. “Joyful and inspired
actors equate to a good show and a rewarding experience for the audience. I felt this as a fight
choreographer for Macbeth and as an actor in An Empty Plate at the Cafe du Grande Boeuf. The
audience can feel the community being built and Saltfire does this with panache on every show,” says
director Erik Van Beuzekom.
Sherwood will be a somewhat new focus for Saltfire, appealing to family audiences of all ages, as
opposed to past productions of Shakespeare and contemporary scripts intended for more mature
viewers. The community has expressed a desire for more age-inclusive productions, and this one
responds to those requests.
Additionally, as part of its mission to serve the community at large, Saltfire has recently secured
rehearsal space at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds through an agreement that offsets the $9000 rental
fee by doing in-kind work to improve the space to make it more usable for the community at large, and
potential future productions at that location. Finding partnerships and opportunities like the one with
Jefferson County Fairgrounds creates community partnerships that expand performance opportunities
for the entire community as well as offset rental costs that have been an on-going burden for a company
constantly seeking new performance and rehearsal spaces.
Saltfire’s core mission is to offer opportunities for local non-professional actors, designers and directors
to create meaningful, relevant, and engaging live theatre for local audiences. Previous summer outdoor
shows have been very popular, with 60-100 attendees for each performance. Our productions have
involved actors and designers with a broad range of experience, from former professionals to first

speaking roles. Our audiences are similarly diverse – the majority of our audiences are local residents,
but that’s been changing as we develop a regional reputation. We strongly believe that live theatre
should be accessible to everyone, and work hard to keep our shows affordable and accessible.
In just over three years, our growing theatre company has now held seven highly successful productions.
th
This will be our 8 show.
As You Like It - August 2022 Cast ranged in age from 16 to 72; over 30 Jefferson County
actors, designers and volunteers were directly involved in the production. Entire cast and
production team were locals (one actor commuted from Bainbridge).
All In the Timing -May 2023 Made possible in part by a grant from PTAC this production
expanded our local audience appeal, with a contemporary ensemble cast play performed in
an intimate setting, as a contrast to our large summer outdoor Shakespeare productions.
The cast – all Jefferson County residents - also had a broad age range (13-72), and eight of
the 18 people in the cast and technical team were under 30, a demographic rarely well-
represented in Port Townsend arts activities. All shows sold out with standing-room crowds
for this highly acclaimed production.
Taming of the Shrew – August 2023 This was a very ambitious production, with a cast of 20
local actors (ages 13-73, half of them under 30), and over 15 other local designers,
technicians and volunteers involved in creating the show. The production was struck by
tragedy when our original director, Consuelo Aduviso Brennan, suffered a catastrophic
stroke in July, passing away in early August, just after the show opened. Wanting to honor
Consuelo’s vision and her lifelong commitment to arts education, particularly her work with
children and teens, we went ahead with the production, dedicating the show to her each
night.
Twelfth Night - January 2024 brought the spark of live theatre into the deep darkness of
January – a time normally underserved by local and regional entertainment. Our use of the
historic JFK Building at Fort Worden was the result of collaborative partnerships with both
Centrum and Fort Worden Hospitality. The production was performed “in the round” with
the actors up close to the audience, creating a very connected, personal experience of the
play. We sold out every show, and added a third weekend to accommodate demand.
Chekhov’s The Sneeze – August 2024 Saltfire’s returned to both Finnriver and Fort Worden
venues, with a delightful romp through Chekhov’s short comedies. The cast had the widest
age range yet for a Saltfire show, with 16 actors ranging in age from 14 to 90. Despite
persistently rainy weather, shows were well attended, particularly on our closing weekend
at Fort Worden.
An Empty Plate in the Café du Grand Boeuf – November 2024. Last fall’s production of
Empty Plate was a critically acclaimed success, with all shows sold out, and favorable
reviews in the Leader and in regional theatre publications. This was Saltfire’s first venture
into performing a less well-known play with a small cast, and it was a smash hit. Our return
to the small, intimate venue of Vintage was a perfect pairing for a play that takes place
entirely in a French Café.
Saltfire Theatre PTAC Grant Application 3
May 20, 2025
Macbeth – January/February 2025. Sellout crowds and favorable reviews marked our
winter production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth at Fort Worden’s JFK building. A cast 0f 22
actors played 30 characters, with a production team of 9 working behind the scenes. Our
youngest cast member was 10, the oldest was 73. This was our most technically demanding
and largest scale production to date.
For all seven of our prior productions, Saltfire has been able to provide cast, crew and designers with
modest stipend payments out of the proceeds from ticket sales after expenses are paid. Our goal is to
be able to do this again, as part of recognizing the contributions of the working artists that make
creating community theatre possible.
Saltfire works hard to make theatre affordable and accessible to local audiences and artists. Receiving
this grant from the Port Townsend Arts Commission will offset some of Saltfire’s venue rental costs,
which are significant for a small company with no permanent home. Offsetting venue rental fees will
help Saltfire to maintain a modest cash reserve as seed money for future productions. Such a cash
reserve allows Saltfire flexibility in considering contemporary scripts for future productions, as those
works require royalty payments up front, and will aid Saltfire in responding to local audiences’ desire for
a wider range of theatrical experiences.
Based on data from previous shows, our projected audience will be mainly Port Townsend & East
Jefferson County Residents. Marketing and outreach will be mostly local, using local community
outreach resources such as e-newsletters, FaceBook, community bulletin boards and online event
calendars, and the BareBoards calendar email list. Recent glowing reviews for An Empty Plate and
Macbeth in the regional theatre press has further raised our visibility for regional audiences.
If this event has received Arts Commission Funding in the past….
Saltfire has received three PTAC grants previously: the first in March 2023, which helped fund our May
2023 production of All In the Timing, the second in June 2023, which contributed to our August 2023
production of Taming of the Shrew, and the third supporting our January 2024 production of Twelfth
Night. Saltfire applied for PTAC funding for the August 2024 production of The Sneeze, but did not
receive it. As a relatively new local arts organization (we recently celebrated our third year as a legal
entity!), PTAC grant funding support helps us continue to survive and thrive as we grow and expand our
offerings.

Venue Accessibility Statement
It is important to the City of Port Townsend that publicly funded events are available to many
diverse audiences. Thank you for ensuring people with various backgrounds and accessibility
needs feel welcome and can be accommodated as part of your project or event.
Has the venue for the public project or event been assessed as ADA accessible?
If yes, please attach a copy of the assessment report to your application, or complete the Venue
Accessibility Statement below and attach this document.
Venue Accessibility Statement
Please check each question below.
Is there a handicapped parking space nearby?
5
Can participants enter the building without assistance? (i.e. no stairs or barriers to entry,
5
door(s) able to be opened with closed fist and not too heavily weighted)
Can participants njoy and participate in the event as fully as a temporarily able-bodied person?
5
(i.e., wheelchair seating, elevator or lift if more than one floor)
Are the restroom facilities accessible? (i.e., toilet at least 17" high, grab bars)
5
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1992, individuals with disabilities are
protected from discrimination "in the enjoyment of any right, privilege, advantage, or opportunity
enjoyed by others in the services, programs, or activities provided or made available \[funded\] by
local governments, their instrumentalities or agencies.”
Any event receiving funding must be held in an accessible venue, and accessibility and any
inaccessible aspects of a venue be noted in the publicity for each event. "Accessible" means that
anyone in a wheelchair, scooter, walker, or on crutches or cane(s) can gain access and entry to
and participate in the event being held, as can anyone who is temporarily able-bodied. This
includes access to restroom facilities. If you are not sure, DASH (Disability Awareness Starts Here)
may be able to provide resources or assess your venue.
