This project will repair the pavement on Tyler Street between Lawrence and Jefferson Street and will install areas of new sidewalk and wheelchair ramps along the corridor, removing barriers to access businesses, the Community Center, and the Farmers Market in Uptown. This project is partially funded by the Transportation Benefit District (TBD), which has been utilizing sales tax is available to the public to learn about projects completed in 2024, and preview what is funded for 2025. Tyler Street between Lawrence and Jefferson Street was initially slated to be repaved in 2024 when it was combined with a multi-modal accessibility project along Lawrence Street. However, when the project did not receive any bids, the two projects were separated. The Lawrence Street Accessibility Project was completed at the end of 2024, also partially funded by grant match from the TBD, and the Tyler Street scope will begin this year. Similar to Lawrence Street, the pavement on Tyler Street is rapidly deteriorating and this is an opportunity to prevent complete pavement failure, which is more costly to address later. Additionally, new wheelchair ramps and areas of new sidewalk will be installed so that a fully accessible route from Downtown to Uptown can facilitate safer pedestrian access for those using assistive devices like wheelchairs and walkers. The City will create a new ADA accessible parking stall in the block between Lawrence Street and Clay Street, and additional parking modifications will occur at the end of the project. In April 2024, City Council approved head out (back in) angled parking on Tyler Street to replace the angled parking currently present. Head out parking is much safer for bikes and pedestrians using this busy section of Uptown. The projects in the Lawrence and Tyler Street business corridor in Uptown are possible and have been successful through support of new TBD funds, significant state grant funding, the PT Main Street Program, Disability Awareness Starts Here (DASH), the Jefferson County Farmers Market, Local 2020 Transportation Lab, and Jefferson County Transit. # # # For project updates visit the Lawrence & Tyler Street webpage: https://cityofpt.us/engagept/page/lawrence-tyler-street-projects To read the 2024 Transportation Benefit District Annual Report, visit: https://cityofpt.us/tbdfacts
