JOB SUMMARY
Under general supervision to perform custodial maintenance duties and general cleanliness
procedures. As a member of the Facilities team, the custodian is responsible for maintaining the
sanitation of City facilities, public restrooms, and offices. The City of Port Townsend strives to provide

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provides essential services as a front-line worker.
• Works well in a team.

• Performs general, routine custodial duties including but not limited to dusting, mopping, trash
removal, sanitizing, cleaning of windows, buffing of floors, vacuuming, shampooing carpets,
litter pickup, cleaning restrooms, and restocking paper and soap supplies.
• Performs routine maintenance to custodial equipment and supplies.
• May be required to work weekends or holiday shifts.
• Understands and follows SDS manuals and guidelines.
• Empties trash receptacles, disposes trash into compactors and/or dumpsters, and bags trash
for proper disposal.
• Unlocks doors, ensuring doors are locked after cleaning areas.
• Reports needs and concerns to appropriate staff, which may include submitting or
recommending work orders and checking supply levels.
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes
continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
• Assists in on-the-job training of seasonals on routine procedures.
• Performs cleaning functions specific to the assigned facilities and/or based on
seasonal/project requirements.
• May assist or perform snow removal activities as needed.
• Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
• Maintains basic record keeping of purchases and work activities.
• Performs interior and exterior window cleaning duties.
• Uses ladders and extension poles for cleaning.
• Assists with development and implementation of safety programs.
• Inspects facilities and grounds for safety and security; identifies and reports hazardous
conditions and facility maintenance needs to supervisors.
• May assist and coordinate cleanup operations associated with illegal or abandoned camp
sites.
• Inspects rental facilities before and after events.
• Completes proper pre- and post-rental checklists.
• If desired employee has the option to be added to the on-call rotation.

QUALIFICATIONS
Required
• High school diploma or GED.
• Valid Washington State driver's license and driving record acceptable to the City’s insurance
carrier.
• First Aid/CPR certification or the ability to obtain within the first 12 months in this position.
• Complete Bloodborne Pathogens training within the first 12 months in this position.
• Must be able to pass an FBI fingerprint criminal history background check and successfully
complete CJIS Security Awareness training before working in the secured portions of the
City’s police department.
Preferred
• Experience working with basic janitorial equipment and hand tools.
• Experience using a maintenance management software program.
• Current First Aid/CPR/AED Certification.
• Current Bloodborne Pathogens Certification.
WORKING CONDITIONS
This position requires being onsite working indoors and outdoors during all types of weather; repeated
walking, bending, stooping, and lifting; standing for long periods of time; the ability to occasionally lift up
to 60 lbs.; vision and hearing at level required to perform essential functions (may be corrected); and a
full range of motor skills.
