This is much more than previous months and was a great and sweeping success! Jefferson County Historical Society Exhibition From March 23, 2023 (day after JCHS signed award contract) to date, we've had over 1,650 visitors at the Jefferson Museum (a 7.5% increase in visitation from the same period in 2022) ... Funding from the Port Townsend Arts Commission helped offset expenses associated with this public program as well as the cost of printing and mailing the postcard associated with our Under Water Street exhibition that opened in April. Saltfire Theatre Early support from PTAC was the seed that made this successful production possible. Knowing we would be able to cover royalty costs gave us the confidence to choose a well nfidence in our vision of expanding local community theatre opportunities was quite literally the wind beneath our wings. Thank you, PTAC, for your critical role in making All In the Timing a success. a collection of 5 short plays performed as a set. We had much higher than anticipated community participation the show can be performed with only 5 actors, and we were hoping for 10-12 people auditioning. As it turned out, 25 people auditioned, and we ended up casting 13 local actors. The cast ranged in age from 13 to 72. Five other people were involved in behind-the-scenes efforts (stage management, box office, props and costumes, lighting and sound, etc.) Eight of the 18 people in the cast and technical team were under 30, a demographic rarely well represented in Port Townsend activities. As part of our company ethos of sharing the results of our success with the cast and crew, all 18 cast and technical crew were paid a $200 stipend in recognition of their professional with the physical load-in/load out work was paid a $100 stipend in recognition of his efforts." Butoh "Our performances were a wonderful success and were very well-received by the public. Our August 15th performance took place on the Tyler Street Staircase & the Water Fountain next to Alchemy Bistro. Our performance celebrated and highlighted the beautiful Landscapes of historic Port Townsend, and featured participation from Jefferson County musicians and dancers. Our August 18th performance took place at North Beach County Park and celebrated the Salish Sea. These events th were very well-attended and exceeded our own expectations." "The August 15 performance featuring 30 dancers & 3 musicians had an audience attendance ... $1,000 stipend for guest artist Eugenia Vargas who served as director and choregropaher of the performances $300 artist stipend for musicians of over 95 people, most of them from the City of PT and Chimacum areas. The August 18th performance had nearly 50 audience members in attendance." Black Lives Matter podcast We produced 10 episodes of a podcast that features local people of the global majority (pGM aka BIPOC) that will air on Spotify weekly beginning 9122123. Podcast guests included educators, artists, and cultural ictivist. Music for the podcast was provided entirely by artists in Port Townsend and Chimacum. Finally, the podcast was produced anO co-nosted by a multigenerational team of Port Townsend PGM residen\[SIC\] Poetry on the Salish Sea We are very grateful to the Port Townsend Arts Commission members and staff for their generous financial help and staff support. Thank you especially to Lonnie Mickle for walking us through the contractual and reporting steps of the grant. Thanks to all the committee members who took a chance on a new literary arts project. Hope to see you at some of the readings next year. Poetry on the Salish Sea (formerly Wilderbee Farm Poetry Series) was a six-part, monthly poetry series at Wilderbee Farm in Port Townsend. The series exceeded our expectations in four ways: 1) our audiences averaged 75 poetry lovers over the course of the series; we were expecting somewhere in the range of 25 - 50, 2) the poets who read were uniformly pleased and enthusiastic about their experience and are helping us identify poets for a second possible second season, 3) the series started with only one volunteer (Kathryn Hunt) but has unexpectedly attracted a loyal, capable cadre of six - ten volunteers, and 4) we are exploring the possibility of a second season, which we didn't envision when we submitted a PTAC grant proposal. All pleasant, exciting, and unanticipated outcomes. Film Festival This season, we hosted 903 unique customers/attendees at the festival, with a dramatic increase of ticket sales (4 Festival, was a big success. Our five-day in- person event welcomed 50+ films and nearly 40 special guests, including the Indigo Girls (iconic folk rock duo), Lindsay Wagner (known for her Emmy-winning performance of attendees Port Townsend Summer Band Attendance at the Venues in the American Legion Hall were at capacity with standing room only. Attendance at the other venues was at least as high if not higher than 2022. Typical attenance was in the range of 250 to 300 persons. 2023 was a very good season. The Band was able to play its full schedule at its normal venues, with very good attendnce by members of the local community and visitors. Attendees often expressed appreciation for the Band's concerts and the quality of the performances. We are pleased to have member volunteers from the high school level through seniors. One high school student was awarded a small scholarship, provided by one of our donors. KCPT we were able to extend additional family discounts at other performance times. This gave families more flexibility for attending during the hectic holiday/cold and flu season and was greatly appreciated. Individual patrons who contributed to the Art4All campaign did so knowing they were joining PTAC and the City of Port Townsend in paying it forward to other families in order to increase their ability to enjoy live theater for the holidays. These donations were added when individuals purchased tickets to our three fall/winter shows in 2023. This donation revenue made up for the shortfall in the projected ticket sales budget due to health cancellations. In total, an additional $1,316 was raised and allocated for these access efforts. "Thanks to sponsorship from PTAC, KCPT also offered two scheduled family show performances (Dec 17th evening & Dec 21st matinee, 2023) for the project as well as accommodating family show discounted pricing for some who were unable to attend on the designated performance times. KCPT leveraged the PTAC grant support for these holiday show access initiatives by inviting individual ticket buyers to join PTAC by adding an Art4All roundup donation to support our Family Show pricing, Pay What You Wish preview and ASL interpreted performances, as well as an additional 180 Pay What You Wish seats available throughout all performances of What the Dickens?!. Most importantly, the themes of the show resonated with patrons of all ages. Our joyful production provided our community a humorous and festive live theater experience during this holiday season. The Port Townsend Arts Commission and City of Port Townsend were acknowledged for their grant support of Free Student Tickets and discounted Family Shows on posters distributed throughout Jefferson County, Flyers distributed to students in all Jefferson County school districts, digital lobby display, printed and virtual show program, newspaper ads, and the KCPT website. Key City Public Theatre (KCPT) welcomed numerous families and area students from K-12th grade to our holiday production. A world premiere play, What the Dickens?! played a successful run from November 30 December 23, 2023 in downtown Port Townsend. Thanks to support from the Port Townsend Arts Commission (PTAC), two matinee performances (Dec 8 & Dec 14, 2023) were dedicated to school shows hosting Port Townsend and Quilcene School District classrooms with K- 5th graders, and middle/high school students. These young audience members universally enjoyed the play and post-performance discussions were held in which students could ask questions of the artists/cast and further explore themes of the play. To deepen student experiences this year two other post-performance activities were added: for Port Townsend OPEPO students, cast members and production artists visited one classroom the day after their performance for a one-hour in depth session with Q&A and artist demos with students having been led in a visual art exercise by teachers in which they drew images from the play to recall favorite moments, and shared those with the visiting artists; for Quilcene students (elementary high school) KCPT rented a space for students and teachers to enjoy a post-show brown bag lunch and one-hour discussion, Q&A and artist demo. A total of 1606 patrons attended What the Dickens?! during the Nov 30 Dec 23 performance run. Of those attendees, 219 were Jefferson County students using FREE student tickets and another 94 students attended the show at discounted family pricing. 107 patrons were family members attending discounted Family Show performances with students. Additionally, 254 patrons attended with Pay What You Wish pricing ranging from $2 - $35 with an average ticket price of $17.23. Attendance was strong despite a high percentage of patrons cancelling tickets throughout the run due to Covid symptoms and positive tests. That being said, we reached our access attendance goals for students, and Family Show attendees and met our Pay What You Wish admission goals, with 75% more patrons gaining access through this initiative. Overall attendance was at 95% after health cancellations." (i.e., wheelchair seating, elevator or lift if more than one floor) Are the restroom facilities accessible? (i.e., toilet at least 17" high, grab bars) Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port Townsend community: In the fall and winter, following the busy summer tourist season, JCHS focuses on reconnecting with our local community by offering free, all-ages, and accessible public programs—one of our top priorities. Another ongoing priority is involving and supporting local artists in our museum programming. Our request aims to fund the annual JCHS + KPTZ Holiday Extravaganza, an event designed to benefit local residents and artists while also welcoming visitors. The Holiday Extravaganza, a free event open to the public, will take place on Saturday, December 14th, from 12 PM to 4 PM. Attendees can join in person at the museum or tune in via 91.9 FM or online at kptz.org. The event will feature musical performances, interviews, and trivia, showcasing local artists for our local audience. At JCHS, eliminating barriers to engagement and supporting the local creative workforce are key responsibilities. These efforts are particularly important now as we undergo a transformative period, including costly ADA upgrades to our building and other community-centered changes. To keep this event free, we are requesting funding specifically to pay honoraria for the musicians and sound technician. Offering free or pay-what-you-wish programs is crucial for expanding access to local arts, and compensating artists fairly is essential for maintaining a thriving creative workforce. Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project: The grant from the Port Townsend Arts Commission will directly fund $100 honoraria for each of the five musicians performing in this free, all-ages arts program, along with a $350 honorarium for the sound engineer managing the broadcast. Phil Andrus of KPTZ will host and produce the event, and the lineup, as of July 2024, includes talented artists like Julian Catford (solo guitar), Paisani Norte (Italian music), and Roger and Kristen Ferguson (a father-daughter bluegrass duo). Without this grant, the event faces significant challenges. We would be forced to either forgo paying the musicians and sound engineer, charge admission, or cancel the event altogether. Currently, our budget does not allow for the payment of honoraria, and we are reluctant to proceed without compensating these artists fairly. Paying honoraria aligns with our commitment to supporting working artists, who should not be expected to perform for free. Additionally, charging admission would contradict our goal of providing free arts programming to the local community. Therefore, the city's funding is essential not only to ensure the event takes place but also to maintain its accessibility and fairness to the artists involved. Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors: Our free programming is one of the vital ways we connect Port Townsend and Jefferson County residents to local arts; the Holiday Extravaganza will provide an additional opportunity for residents (along with friends and family) to visit the museum near the holidays, free of charge. Overall, our public program participation tends to be majority local attendees, particularly in the fall and winter months; last year, approximately 70% of Holiday Extravaganza attendees were Jefferson County residents. This event will be hosted in our Ferguson Gallery, but attendees will be free to roam the rest of the museum during this event as well, so this programming also serves to give our community a free opportunity to experience three exhibitions that are on view through the end of the year: • Suzanne Lamon: Paintbox Cornucopia. A mid-career retrospective of a local artist, featuring large-scale, colorful oil paintings imbued with the artist's personal iconography. • Jeremy Johnson: Stem to Stern: The Craft and Culture of a Maritime Community. Black + White photography capturing the essence and challenges of Port Townsend's maritime culture, emphasizing community, craftsmanship, and continuity against modernity's relentless pace. • Jail Exhibition: We will have updated interpretation of our historic jail space based on new research. The Holiday Extravaganza will be promoted via our website, social media, our JCHS newsletter, online publications, and printed fliers, with additional promotional support from KPTZ. If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount. This year, we are making several key changes to the Holiday Extravaganza event. First, we are relocating the event from our historic Fire Hall to the Ferguson Gallery, as the Fire Hall will be closed for renovation. Despite the change in location, the Ferguson Gallery can accommodate a similar number of attendees, ensuring that the event remains as accessible and welcoming as in previous years. Another change is the adjustment of the event time. We are moving the event from its previous hours of 1 pm to 5 pm to an earlier time of 12PM to 4PM. This change is intended to provide attendees who are driving more daylight, enhancing safety and comfort, especially during the winter months when daylight hours are limited. (i.e., toilet at least 17" high, grab bars) Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port Townsend community: PT Artscape facilitates creativity for all ages and abilities at our booth. The public has opportunities to come and create small art projects with us at or acquire a 'take away' art kit with enclosed instructions. Our projects may be quite simple or a little more complex and time consuming, depending upon our guests' preference of which ones to create with. Example is our semi prepared weaving projects involving yarn and cd's. People may choose to weave on one side of the cd, both sides, or take their supplies for finishing later. Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project: The City's funding will support the project through funding of art supplies which make up our art kits and art activities at our booth. The breadth of the project will likely be smaller if we do not have City funding. And we would be spending time asking for support elsewhere, in order to purchase art activity supplies. Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors: This project takes place in Port Townsend where people visit friends and family to enjoy winter festivals. In the past we have learned that our visitors come from at least 5 surrounding counties, and various countries! Our audience is attracted mainly through the advertising done by PTMainstreet, though we also advertise on our Instagram social media page. If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount. The only change in the event is that we need more materials. At last year's Tree Lighting Festival we ran out of kits! Venue Accessibility Statement Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port Townsend community: This showcase and venue foster a creative and experimental container in the rural Jefferson county. Not only do they provide a safe space for new performers but they also offer an opportunity to explore more fridge topics. As an audience member, you are witness to something that is truly unique to this area and those who live here. Most of the performers make their own costumes and props and the venue stage is tucked in the woods, held by alders and cedars.
