Adrianne Harun's powerful novel inspired our community to connect, walk over 5,000 miles on their own "Big Walks" thanks to a partnership with Jefferson County Public Health, and to feel the magic of reading in community. The library received excellent press coverage and plentiful comments of deep appreciation from the community for a book that had strong local ties. Watching the Wizard of Oz at The Rose was an enchanting way to kick off Reading Month. The book club discussions were some of the most dynamic we have had for a Community Read. Harun was gracious in her support and helped lead five community book clubs, spoke with nearly 40 high school students, and ended the month with a riveting conversation with Erica Bauermeister for the Meet the Author event for over 100 attendees. Adriene said that this experience has been "revelatory" for her. This program was such a success thanks to the Friends of the Library and community partners' wonderful support! a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library March 2024 Monthly Program Report Community Read 2024 Program Statistics Program Attendance Date House Call Book Club Discussions - 2 clubs 20 2/26/2024 & 3/25/24 Wizard of Oz PTFF Kickoff Film 130 3/2/2024 Book Lovers' Cafe 18 3/4/2024 Peninsula Trails 85 3/6/2024 Nest Book Discussion 7 3/13/2024 Deadly Wind 65 3/14/2024 Marina Cafe Book Discussion 30 3/26/2024 Meet the Author 105 3/30/2024 StoryWalk 500* 3/1/2024- 3/31/2024 Big Walk 500* 3/1/2024- 3/31/2024 PT HS Talk 40 3/20/2024 Adrianne led 5 community book clubs 50 Throughout March *best estimates Total attendance: 1550 (ufation titstic y Books, audiobooks, digital library checkouts total 173 Read and Release circulating through community* 500+ Book Club Kits 2 *these books are read and reread many times- it is hard to know how many. Perfect! Kennedy decides to throw down the gauntlet to "today's Marines," but before he knows it, he's sparked a wild fad. The entire country has answered the call, it seems, and for a few crazed winter weeks, masses of Americans will embark on their own arduous Big Walks —the "JFK 50-Milers." Yet in tiny Humdtown—an isolated mill town in the Pacific Northwest —not everyone who shows up for a hastily organized Big Walk is motivated by patriotism. Splendidly imagined, with prose that sings on the page, On the Way to the End of the World is an adventure story riven with secrets, a national fairy tale twisted into a whodunit. Adrianne Harun is the author of two short story collections, The King of Limbo, a Washington State Book Award finalist, and Catch, Release, winner of the Eric Hoffer Award. Stories from her collections have been listed as Notable in both Best American Short Stories and Best American Mystery Stories. Her first novel, A Man Came Out of a Door in the Mountain, was long -listed for the International Dublin Literary Award, a finalist for both the Pacific Northwest Booksellers' Award and the Washington State Book Award and winner of a Pinckley Prize for Debut Crime Fiction. Her new novel, On the Way to the End of the World, was published in September, 2023. A longtime resident of Port Townsend, Washington, Adrianne ran a garage, Motorsport, with her late husband, the legendary Alistair Scovil, and has also worked as a teacher and an editor for many years. Comments On the evening of March 12th, I assisted with the Literacy Night at Salish Coast Elementary. This event was a huge success, and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to join in! I set up a table in the Salish Coast library with early learning backpacks, a selection of our new MP3 readalongs, and information about programs and events at the public library. This was a wonderful opportunity to connect with kids and families at the school, many of whom spent a long time in the library playing with the STEM toys that we had set out, checking out library books, and talking with the staff. They are hoping to make this an annual event and I am excited to attend again next year! a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library March 2024 Monthly Program Report a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library March 2024 Monthly Program Report a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library March 2024 Monthly Program Report Date: 3/11 /2024 Presenter: Emily Bufford Intended Age: 6-12 Attendance 10 Location: Pink House Meeting Room Sponsored By: FOL Description: Join other LEGO enthusiasts to build from your imagination and work with friends to construct simple or elaborate LEGO creations. It was so much fun to see the different groups and age demographics that showed up each month. The first month we exclusively had teens in attendance. Meanwhile, in February and March we had an equal number of teens and adults show up. It always brings me joy when we can offer cross- generational programming that brings adults and young people together. The overdose crisis is escalating, access to addiction treatment is limited, and people are still sent to prison for simple possession. Even as we shift toward the legal use of some drugs, other drugs remain deeply stigmatized and criminalized. Yet proven solutions are out there —so what's not working? In a talk that incorporates both scientific data and examples from popular culture, professor Ingrid Walker shows that our perceptions about "drugs" depend on who is taking which drugs. Why are we stuck in the same failed approaches? Could it be that the answer is as basic as questioning and changing our cultural stories about drugs and their users? Ingrid Walker is associate professor emerita of American studies at the University of Washington, Tacoma. Her interdisciplinary research explores how social perceptions of drug use in the United States inform everything from popular culture to policy. In her book, High: Drugs, Desire, and a Nation of Users, she examines the cultural norms and conflicted thinking that reinforce our drug problems. Walker also works with the Drug Policy Alliance to influence social change. a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library MONTH 2O24 Monthly Program Report Comments: Port Townsend Public Library MONTH 2024 Monthly Program Report The Friends hosted their annual Volunteer Appreciation PahxdoinQNaUona|\/o|unteer Month. We received quite a few compliments on how much people are enjoying these live poetry events and how moved they were by hearing the poetry and the poets speak about their own process and craft. The other picture is a bit of wonderful serendipity. These three moms attended the poetry event and afterwards all went to the children's room to reminisce about their children being in storytime together as babies. They all noticed that their children were all pictured on our 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten Hall of Fame Wall. This program encourages caregivers to read 1,000 books to their children before they reach kindergarten, children who complete this big challenge receive a prize book provided by the Friends of the Library. I snapped a picture of this lovely moment and smiled on the way home thinking about how public libraries build these deep and lasting relationships in our community that we do not always know about or see, and it is really nice when we do get to see the impacts that are made. a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library May 2024 Monthly Program Report Date: May 31 Presenter: Chris Spinney and Kathleen Hawn Intended Age: Adults Attendance 15+ Location: Port Townsend Library Sponsored By: Library Description: Viking Knitting Demonstration — view a Viking Knitting demonstration and learn about the kit available. The whole event was an absolute joy. I was so impressed by Lydia, Julia, and their herd of "odd -balls and outcasts." We had a huge turnout with over 150 people and the goats were so patient with all of the kids who wanted to pet them, feed them, and dress a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library June 2024 Monthly Program Report them up in colorful costumes. It felt like something out of a children's book. I was also super impressed by the craft tables that Lydia and Julia set out with hand made block print stamps. I would love to have them back to do an art program with us someday! As I was walking into the library at the end of the night, I heard a parent say to their kids, "Don't we have the best library?" That moment brought so much joy to my heart. I have the best job! a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library June 2024 Monthly Program Report a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library June 2024 Monthly Program Report 1111NIMMENNIM Date: 6/28/2024 Presenter: Pheobe Wahl and Emily Bufford Intended 7-12 Age: Attendance 100 Location: Children's Room Sponsored Friends of the Port Townsend Library B: Description Help us transform our library pathway into a magical fairy garden! Enjoy an afternoon of storytelling and fairy exploration with Children's Book Author, Pheobe Wahl. We will be reading her book Backyard Fairies and then using natural and upcycled materials to construct fairy houses. Materials may include bark, twigs, shells, feathers, flowers, leaves, buds, and berries. Ages 7-12. Comments: What an absolutely magical day! This was one of our most anticipated programs of the Summer. Leading up to the program, several parents told me that they were so excited to meet Pheobe Wahl and build fairy houses with their kiddos. The Children's Room was packed for Pheobe's presentation. We could not have fit another person into the room. Families traveled from all the way from Whidbey Island to meet her and listen to her read Backyard Fairies and Little Witch Hazel. Pheobe was an absolute delight. She brought the gnome house that she originally created for Little Witch Hazel. It was so delightful watching the kids interact with Pheobe and ask questions about the house and her stories. After the presentation, Phoebe stayed in the Children's Room to answer questions and sign books. Meanwhile, we started the fairy house building activity. Kids and their families chose supplies from the shells, sticks, moss, bark, flowers, and leaves from the four stations that I set up. We had families set up along every pathway around the library. Fairy houses started appearing under benches, in the nooks of trees, and along the garden walls. It was so delightful to see all the different fairy houses at the end of the program. I hope to do this program again next year!
