To the Mayor and City Council Uctober 18, 1949 of Port Townsend, Washington Gentlemen: In behalf of the members of "Port Townsend Old Age Pension Union". we wish to appeal to you on account of an ousting order by the Chief of Police about three weeks ago. We have been using the City Hall for our meetings for a little over a year. This by virtuesof a permit granted us by the Mayor, Mr. h, L. Anderson. ';a appreciate this courtesy and wish to extend our thanks. The reason for the ousting, as given,to us, is the charge that we are Communists. This allegation we wish to emphatically deny. As far as we know none of the members of the Port Townsend Union are Communists, never have been and don't intend to be. We hope we have not inconvenienced the City Council during period of our meeting in the hall. 'Ne only meet once per month, and then only for transaction of business pertinent to the "cause" of the "Old Age Pension" idea. We will of course got another meeting place just as soon as we find a suitable place as to room and what our meager finances will allow. UNFINISHED AND NEW BUSINESS Street Lease granted Port Townsend Flying CRub A lease form providing for the lease of that part of Lawrence Street between Kearney Street and 'Thayer Dtreet to the Port Townsend Flying Club, Inc., which had been prepared and submitted by the Flying Club as directed by the City Council at a previous session, was presented for consideration at this time. upon approval by the City Attorney it was moved by Councilman Gleason, and seconded by Councilman Lueller that the lease, as presente be approved upon the basis of an annual fee of One Dollar ($1.00) and that the Mayor and City Clerk be authorized to execute such lease on behalf of the city. Upon roll call vote all six Councilmen present voted in the affirmative and motion was declared carried. Mayor announces invitation received. Mayor Anderson advised those present that an invitation had been extended by the Parent -Teachers Association to all city officials to attend a session to be held at the Presbyterian Church on October 21 at which the principal speaker would deliver an address relative to tax sources and the tax structure in the State of Washington. Use of City Hall restricted. Referring to the matter presented in the letter from "the uld Age Pension Union", Councilman Sullivan stated that permission to use the Council Uhambers as a meeting place had been denied to several groups in the past and he felt that it would be well to set a definite policy with respect to the use of the Uity Hall, It w•as'thereupon moved by Councilman Sullivan, and seconded by Uouncilman Steele that in the future no portion of the City Hall be used as a meeting place by any group other than a tax supported governmental unit. Motion carried. ADJOURNMENT There being no further business appearing before the Council for their consideration at this time, it was moved by Councilman Mueller, and seconded by Councilman Sullivan that the Ueuncil do now adjourn. Motion carried.
