To the Mayor & City Council Yembera
of Port Townsend
DearSirs: Cuilcene Post Y,3213, Veterans of Foreign C1ars, went on record as being opposed
to the installation of parking meters on the streets of Port Townsend; -That the streets are
public thoroughfares built and maintained by public taxation and assessment of property
owners, and therefore the public who built the streets should not be assessed a toll for
the use of their property.
That one hour parking would cause undue inconvenience to those who conduct business
with the doctors, dentists, lawyers, beauty parlor operators, bank or any business es-
tablishments in the city and that many would transfer their business to Sequim or other
places, rather than put up with the inconvenience of meters. This would create a hardship
and a loss in business to the merchants and others in Port Townsend.
Many stated that they had not found parking difficult in Port Townsend under present
conditions, and that they would rather walk a block or two rather than to use Parking
meter and thus run the risk of traffic violation slips and fines due to midjudging time or
to faulty meters.
7e believe that taxes are high enough in Port Townsend to care for its normal needs
and that the people of Jefferson County should not be assessed an additional tax of 'TIO.00
or more per family for the privilege of patronizing the merchants of Port Townsend, and
that f thisparking meter tar: is imposed on us, that we should endeavor to prevent Jefferso
Count,, aiding the city with county money or county equipment in improving or repairing the
city streets or for other purposes.
Sincerely yours,
