Chief of Police.
The monthly report of the Chief of Police, fol. the month of June, 1945, was presented
nd outlined, and ordered filed.
City Engineer.
A written report of the City Engineer upon the surfacing propram, recently completed,
as presented and read, as follows:
TO THE
HONORABLE MAYOR & CITY COUNCIL
of Port Townsend.
Preliminary Report on Light Bituminous paving and Non -Skid Seal Coat on certain city
treats of Port Townsend for 1945.
Estimate based on contract costs for similar construction in 1944 was $9,184.77.
While exact cost gigures are not yet available due to the fact that some bills have not
s yet been submitted, the final cost will be about $7600:00.
There were various factors influencing the costs which were not anticipated at the time
he estimate was submitted. Example: Rock cost 25� more per cubic yard thah last year but
us to more careful spreading 25% was not used and will be available for neat year.
Freight charges on RC-5 was $3.80 per ton less than last year but demurrage on cars was
igher this year, alloying only 24 hours free time and $11.00 per day after that.
Equipment rental was not charged on either Jefferson County or City of Port Townsendquipment used on the work.
Some preliminary patching and other work was done by the City which was not charged to
construction.
Seven (7) tons more MC-2 was used than estimated.
A good job was done by Clallam County men and equipment and at quite a saving in com-
parison with previous contract work.

Councilman Carroll gave it as his opinion that Mr.. Lay should be congfatulated upon
the fast and efficient completion of a first class surfacing job. Councilman Mueller stated
that he was convinced that the completed surfacing was the best job that had been done for
the city in some years.
REPORTS OF STANDING COMMITTEES.
Finance & Claims.
The report of the committee on Finance & Claims, to whom was referred thelmatter of the
Treasurerts report for the month of May, 1945, was presented and read and DDdered filed.
BUILDING PERMITS.
Regilests for building permits were presented and read, as follows:

Honorable Mayor and City Council
Port Townsend, Washington.
Gentlemen: Permission is requested to remodel the store front at the location
commonly known as Hirtzler's Store (Heath's Store); at an estimated cost of approx-
imately $300.00 for materials.

Enclosed you will find renewal of our agreement to furnish your Liquid
Chlorine requirements for the coming twelve months. This contract is identical
in all respects with the agreement you now have with us. ;
We greatly appreciate the business which you have given us and if the
attached meets with your approval will you kindly sign both copies and return
the duplicate copy to us.
Your kind consideration of the new contract will be greably appreciated.

An AMA Washington News Letter, asserviee of the Association of Washington Cities, was
acknowledged received and ordered filed for reference in the office of the City Clerk.

A letter providing an estimate for a concrete sidewalk around the "USO Building",as
same is under consideration by the council, was presented and read, as follows:

Dear Sir:
Our estimate for building a sidewalk, 290 Lin. Feet, 6 feet wide, 4 SnEhes
thick, 6 sacks of cement to a cubic yard, around the U. S. 0. Building, in Port
Townsend, is five hundred and thirty seven dollars and fifty cents ($537.50).
The City of Port Townsend is to furnish the sand and gravel and haul
away excess excavated material.

Councilman Mueller reported that Mr. William Nagel had been contacted for an estimate
of cost to install a pre -mix bituminous sidewalk at the location under discussion, and that
Mr. Nagel had stated that he was no longer able to procure this material from Port Angeles
but was making arrangements to get it in Seattle, and would quote a price for this work as
soon as he was able to determine costs.
