®
Gentlemen:
On Hew Yearfs Day, 1944, I resolved to writer "thank you" letter
to your honorable body, but I somehow postponed it. Today, I write
to thank the Council, each separate department of it, for the prompt
attention which has always been riven to library requests: in January,
1943, when our drinking fountain froze up, and, in thawing flooded
our books, who dug in the snow and found .he water shut-off; the
City Water Department. In this connection, we hope that Mr.Lockhavt
remembers his offer to nut a water shut-off inside the building.
Later, when our fire extinguisher proved to be empty, who took it
array to refill it for us, and who helped us comply with the dim -
out regulation; our City Fire Department. Who, also, when we had
lowered the flag pole to repaint it was able to come to our rescue
to raise it; the City Street Department. And, more recently, when a
thirty -year -old vine had the building in its grasp, who came to unloose
its hold and repair its ravages; 'our City Street Departma:t. In this
connection, are hope T1r. Stahl remembers his promise about tarring
the roof.
I feel that we owe a special "thank you" to the Council for their
generosity to us in the apportionr:.ent of the State Aid Fund. With it
we were able to replace all our damaged books and to change the
storm entrance.
I close with a personal "thank you" to the Mayor and to the City Clerk,
whose regular duties give background and meaning to the routine business
of the City Library.
