Mr. Davies of the District Office of the U. S. Engineers, Scattic, Ytashington,
that the City of Port Townsend probably possesses the original of the permit
advised
authorizing the pipe line crossing at the Oak 3 y Canal. A copy of the p;rmit could
not be located in the files at the District Office. If the original is held by the City
of Port Townsend, this off ice would be interested in obtaining the details thereof, no as
to aboid violating any of th:: stipulations in the permit d u•in^, the installation of the
proposed pipe line.
In consideration of present plans 1t is felt that 60,000 gallons daily will be
an ample supply but is }ins been recommended by our engineers that authorization for a
maximum supply of 100,000 gallons Deily be obtained to provide for e mew[*.enc penis not
prc:ently contemplated.
Your curly consideration of this manor :rill be of great assistance inasmuch na
the water problem at Fort Floglev is of vital current importance. Your cooperation in this

Form St. John's Hospital, to -writ:
ST. :IOHT S HOSPITAL
Port Townsend, ;7ashington
;lay 5, 1941
To the Honorable Harry Anderson,
Mayor of Port Townsend, 71ashington
Dear Sir: -
Your attention is respectfully drawn to tho importaat sums this hospital is
paying for water; according to the season our bills amo}int to from $30.00 (thirty dollars)
to eight -five dollars per month. Luring the recent .Tinter months when there was no garden
sprinkling we paid as much as fifty dollars (:p50.00)
It might be claimed with apparent ,justice that St. John's hospital uses large
quantities of v:;ter; compared with what a family finds sufficient, that is undoubtedly :rue,
but there are s everal other considerations vr'iich with your permission, we mould like to set
forth:
First, the w',ter rates in Port Townsend are higher than In many other places.
Secondly, our hospit 1 is thought by many to be a distinct advantage to the
people of t:ais community:
(a) v^_ry few if any towns of thin size in the nation possess such a large and
well equipped hospital.
(b) there is an advantage to both the patient and the patient's family in having
a nearby institution of t:.is kind.
( a ) cost of hospitalization is less and nayrnents for care are made easier than
would be nossibe worn the afflicted obliged to go to nearby cities.
(d) vie have no wealthy patirnxts, no high'.feos hospitalization slid many of our
patients pay only a part of what their care costs the institutlon.
(e) in no year since the hospital was founded in 1890 has paynient for care
totaled enough to balance expenditures: thus it follows that each year, without exception
vie have had to obtain financial help from outside ,your community in order to pay our bills.
Thirdly, The Sisters of Providence maintain hospitals in several other cities
in this State and in some cases the local ;Iunlciplaity has so valued their service that
®
water has been furnished z:ithout any cost ",hatsoever.
If could be not only a material assistance in our work but n most welcome moral
encouragesierct ns well if' the City of Port Townsend could see its way clear to relieve us of
this considerable item of enpcnse.
To thin and ^e beg, Your Honor, to be o r advocate in thin -to -us very important
®
matter.
Should the above sag^cation s::em impracticable at the: present time may we not at
least obtain a substantial rt:ductfon in our prsont rates?
Assuring ;you of our gratltutc for whatever you may be able to do in our behalf,
e are
Respecfully Yours,
Tire Sisters of St. John's Hospital,
