From J. J. Lafferty - Fi:•e Chief
A letter from Fire "hief, J. J. Lafferty, addressed to the mayor and Council, was
presented and read, together with an attached letter from Mr. Floyd Rayton, representative
of Howard -Cooper Corporation, as follows:
Honorable _Ca;;or and City Co':ncil,
City of Port Townsend.
Gentlemen:
Due to the increase of ponulation in the city and ne'a hones and the increase in the pro-
spective building of dwellings, it appears necessary that the City of Port 'Townsend
Durchase a light rig for fire fighting.
There is a sum of money in the budget for "Repairs and Replacements" in the Tire Depart-
ment budget, :^ich can be used for the purpose of purchasing a chassis, at least in
aiding therein. If this is insufficient, 'the valance can be borrowed from the Volunteer
Fire Departnent and repaid during the next year or two.
I am convinced that the purchase of a light rig, grill aid in a reduction of fire insurance
rates, and will extend the life of the !,hack '=ruck for at lr,ast ten years.
Very truly .yours,
J. J. Lafferty

L:inutes of Regular Session for December 17, 1940, continued
From James H. Cunningham, to -wit:
Fort !lorden, Vlashington
December 13, 1940
the Mayor and City Council,
Port 'Townsend, ;lashington.
Dear Sirs:
It is requested that early consideration be given by the Port Townsend authorities to the
following: -
a. Removal or improvement of the blind curve at the foot of the hill gong
from Fort 'orden to Port '1ownsend by the Coast Guard Station.
b. Improvement or resurfacing of the road down the hill into Fort 71orden by
the Cherry Street gate. I ar:. informed that there has already been a
serious accident there several years ago and there will surely be an
accident on the blind curve near the Coast Guard Station, unless some-
t'.ing is done to straighten out the road.
11ith the prospective increase in the garrison at Fort ilorden the automobile traffic over
the above roads will be heavily increased beginning early in 1941 and neither of the above
named roads are in condition to care for increased traffic. I hope that immediate action
will be possible.
Yours sincerely,
JAI.IES H. CU]•i_;IHGHAM
