Mayor Leighton informed the Council that their has been quite a bit of controversy on the
bus problem and would like to have some views of the council.
Cuncilmsn Sullivan snid lie would like to ask Councilman Lafferty why he could not use hi
own nlaee of business for a bus station for there was a nice office and rest rooms there and
that the bus would be off the street and Councilman Lafferty could drive his bus. either from
wsshington street or Adams `'t.
Councilman Lafferty replied that the greyhound and himself each paid 10% for rontal it
was not a question of a place but a question of keeping it open. 'ie said he could not move
it over to his place for it would cost around 700.00 of 800.00 to keep it open and could not.
of Ord to hire hel; to take care of it. He said that the lest place he was at was very
ur_sotiffactory and that every one was beefing because they could not get their express.
iie said that he was told by the powers of B that it was ok to move to the Delmonico but zinc
the powers of B had denied it, so i:e moved the bus rack to the old spot which was very
`unsatisfactory.
Councilman ;dueller said that the public had been complaining of no adequate bus terminal for
years and could see no bebtar place then the Dolmonico for it was open 18 hours a day.
Councilman Siebenbaum asked Councilman Laffety how long the bus would be parked in front of
the Delmonich, and the reply was that the bus would not be there no more than 30 minutes ear"
tr1p, and the rest of the tine would be out of the business area.
Mayor Leighton said it is important to have the bus ][cap coming to Port Townsend, she said
the objections to the Do monico as she saw it were ones of safety and finance. Two meters
would have to be removed which would mean a loss to the city of $30.00 per meter a month
to the City.
City Attorney Abraham Minted out that this is not a street matter, but a police matter, as
traffic control and parking come under police jurisdiction. :Any change in the present
situation would have to be made by the police if it is to be none now. Any action the count'
might take would have to be by city ordinance modifying the police control in this case.
Police Chief George 1Villestoft said in order to get the bus '.nto the tus z&ne in fromt of
the Delmonico you have to drive it halfway across Taylor Street and then back it into place.
I also Fisk]: y,u how are we going to keep the bus zone open for the half hour the bus would u:
it if we dont take out the meters.
Councilman Swinhoe said that we seem to be Ding about this thing, the wrong way, the cart
before the horse, so.to speak. l7e all agree that wee need the bus service so it appears
it behooves us us to provide an adequate place for it.
Mayor Leighton asked the Police Committee, City Attorney, Police Chief and herself to meet
land come up with a decision by Sat.
