COMMUNICATIONS Alderbrook Farm R.R.2, From E.H. Peterson to -wit: Duncan, (V.I.) B.C. The Hohourable, the Lord Mayor, of the City of Port Tovrnsend, Wash. It is now 50 years since I left the torn of'my birth, and I have one serious grievance that I would like to air. About 55 years ago I was arrested by Officer Finn, one rainy spring evening, my bicycle was impounded, and I was charged with the henious crime of riding on the sidewalk. The event took place near the Court House, Just opposite Schantz Marble Works. It would really take quite a stretch of the imagination to call it a sidewalk, it bore a greater resemblance to a pile of old boards: The next day I had to go to the City Hall and pay Judge Oliver $5.00 and $2.00 costs, to redeem my bicycle. Thert, Era no charge laid against me, no oppor- tunity was given me to get legal counedl, no trial by a jury of my peers. Altogether, I think it was a very high-handed proceedure, and one that reflected no credit on your fair city. I believe the fine was exorbitant, the equivalent of three weeks pay in those days, or equal to about $300.00 today: I am now a respectable old stump -rancher, with one leg in the grave, a pen- sioner of the first war, and when one of my flock of large and rapidly increasing grand -children climb up on my knee and look me in the eye and say" you were a good boy, werent you grandpa", what can I say with this terrible crime on my sheet? I feel that in all justice to myself, and to the fair city of my birth, this case should be reviewed, and that it should be erased from the records and that I should have a full pardon, even if it i" necessary to go to Gov. Rogers or even President McKinley. For character reference, when I worked for the Western Union in the late 90's and at the turn of the century I would mention a few well known citizens, starting:', with Prof. Grant, Prof. Hitt, Prof.Aubert, Prof McClinton, Miss Bray, Old Maid Smith, Miss Anderson of the school staff; Among the business and professional people Z would refer you to Col. F.D. Huestis, Ed Huestis, Hy Blackwood, A.F. Learned, Col. Hill, Col. Landes, N.C. Strong, Judge McClinton, Judge Hatch, Judge Coleman, Judge S.A.
