Librarian's Report The report of the librarian, giving a summary of the activities of the Public Library, was presented and read as follows: To the Chairman and Members of the Library Board, I liereby submit a summary of the work of the library for 1939. Miss Jeannette Rutledge who had served as librarian since August, 1937, resigned at the end'i of August to accept a position as cataloger in the State Library at Olympia. Her loss is felt by all members of the community who are in contact with the public library. Because of her formal library training and experience Miss Rutledge saw and carried out many changes which have increased greatly the usefulness and convenience of -the library. It is to be hoped that funds can be provided to furnish a part time assistant to the lib- rarian, as the increased circulation and service make it impossible for one person to adequately do all the work necessary for increased development of the library. Application has been made for an N.Y.A. assistant, but no assurance of help has been received. The N.Y.A. School here has made the library a new bookcase and magazine rack from material furnished by the library. This has helped greatly to care for the over -crowded condition of the shelves. The Port Townsend Leader has continued to be very liberal with space given to the library for :also and the weekly bood notices for which our patrons have learned to look. They are also binding back numbers of the Leader for the library. Other members of the community are very generous with gifts of books and magazines, supplementing our book funds. The total circulation for 1939 was 29,344, as follows: Juvenile non-fiction 2;158 Adult non-fiction 8;081 Juvenile fiction 55693 Adult fiction 13 412 This is an increase of 4,822 over 1938. During 1939, 361 adult and 10B juvenile borrowers were either registered or re -registered. The total number of borrowers registered on the three-year basis is 1,181 adult and 429 Juvenile, a total of 1616. In addition there were 25 non-resident borrowers registered for the year. There were also 87 temporary cards issued, most of these being to N.Y.A. boys who have proved themselves very trustworthy and appreciative patrons. Inventory is now under way, but as it is not completed the following circulation figures ari based on the inventory taken in December, 1937.
