Cunningham Fort Worden, Washington Mayor Harry L. Hirtzler June 19, 1939 Port Townsend, Washington Dear Mayor Hirtzler: From personal experience I can state the need for a good sidewalk from Fort Worden downtown to Port Townsend. At the present time it is a long, dusty and rocky walk and I wish there was some way that a sidewalk could be built. Could you not consider the use of WPA funds for this purpose, since I have observed a sidewalk already being built into town from the other end, where, I am sure, fewer people will use it than a sidewalk to Fort Slorden. Yours truly, James H. Cunningham, Colonel, 14th C.A., Commanding Mayor Hirtzler instructed the City Clerk to inform Colonel Cunningham that at present no YlPA funds were available for this work as suggested, and that furthermore, the installa and upkeep of side walks were the responsibility of the owners of abutting property. 2' t yam'` Port 'Townsend, Washington July 11, 1939 To the Honorable Mayor and City Council Port Townsend, Washington Gentlemen: It is the wish of the Park Board that the condition of the drain from the intersection of Blaine and Jackson Streets be brought before -the Council as a whole. This drain, which runs through the Park, has rotted and fallen in, in placed, so as to stop all flow, thereby causing seepage Within the park and an unsatisfactory condition at the intersection named. The Street Department, and the Street Committee of the City Council are thoroughly acquainted With the condition existing, and will proceed with the necessary measures as soon as it is reasonably convenient, with the approval of the Council. The cost, under the plan advanced at present, would be negligible as the main item of labor could be taken care of through the W.P.A., it is believed. Vie solicit your Wholehearted approval and cooperation in the matter, in order to main- tain the Park to the best advantage. Yours very truly, City Park Board By -Joe Kirkpatrick City Clerk, C. F. Christian, stated in regard to this letter that no action need be taken by the Council as all concerned were well acquainted with the full situation, but that the Park Board took this means to make the situation a matter of record.
