STORAGE OF FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS A communication from the Washington Surveying and Rating Bureau, addressed to the Chief of the Fire Department, was presented and road, as follows: April 1, 1931, Seattle, Wash. 130JECT: STORAGE OF FLAMMABLE LIQUIDS. TO THE CHIEF OF THE FIRE DEPARTMENT, Dear Sir: We wish to call your attention to the fact that a large number of unapproved retail and private gasoline storage facilities are being installed in localities where the prevailing highly competitive condi- tion in the oil industry has resulted in a temporary low price on gasoline. In some instances those install- ations arc being permitted in violation of existing municipal ordinances. Substandard Installations introduce a very severe hazard to life and property and will necessarily result in increased fire insurance rates on property directly involved, and also adversely affect the grad- ing of the fire protection facilities of the municipality as a whole. Every effort should be made by your department to control the situation in your jurisdiction by strict enforcement of your municipal regulations or if there are no local ordinances specifically governing this particular hazard, we urge the iimmodiato adoption and enforcement of the ordinance recommended by the National Board of Fire Underwriters, which is accepted by this Bureau as standard. May we ask your full cooperation in this important matter. Kindly advise if we can be of assistance to you. Very truly yours, J. K. WOOLLEY, Manager. By DAVE J.
