'i Communication from Bear and Cunningham, engineers, with maps and field notes attached, was presented
and read, as followst
Portland, Oregon, December 18th, 1930.
IMr. C. r'. Christian,
(City Clerk,
Port Townsend, Washington.
Dear Mr. Christian:- '
We are enclosing herewith a copy of the application for a right of -way through the Olympic
National Forest filed with the General Land Office. This for your information and files. .It has taken us a
(long time to get this out but it seemed an almost endless job to onloulate, copy and check the field notes as
soquired by the Land Office, but since there is no definite time limit in which ppplioation has to be made, we
fiave not attempted to rush it.
In your letter of the 26th you request two blueprints of the large profile map of the sea -
ion covered by Contract No.2. Under separate cover we are sending you today two copies of the profile for
this section; also, two blueprints of the condensed profile for the entire line. The first profile represents
he original design. The condensed profile ohms principally the location of the appurtenances as they were
otually installed. We trust that these blueprints are what you want. If, however, you should have had ro-
erence to the map itself, we will be glad to furnish you the blueprints of it. As you may knew, the map show
Ithe alignment of the pipe line with respect to legal subdivisions. The profile chews the elevation of the pip
Vino above sea level at any given point so the term "profile map" is confusing.

With respect to a copy of the field notes for your file, they comprise some thirty books and I am
muro that you would not be interested in a complete copy of them because the bulk of these represent records
:f surveys made during construction which are of no interest after the line is completed. I son having my
nffice check over our reoordc to see whether we can furnish you an office copy of the final alignment. Also,
wench marks, which represents the information usually preserved after the construction period. These notes
together with the final maps and profiles constitute as competent and comprehensive record as anyone can have,
You understand of course that we have preserved all of our field notes end data and they are at
your disposal at any time and without any cost to you. We are keeping them hero principally because we have
a safe place to keep them and know what information in important and what is not. Our field books contain
nothing but thin particular job and there are of course a great number of loose leafrmemos. So long as these
records are in our hands, we feel responsible for them but we could clearly not continue to be responsible
after they have left bur custody. We will of source if the City wishes, gladly turn these records over to
you, but we want to remind you that the records of other work performed in your city have been lost and if
any of these should be lost there would be no way of duplicating them. Anyone not familiar with the records
would have small chance in finding what he is looking for and they are only valuable so long as they are kept
in the ardor in which they are now. It is unfortunate but nevertheless true that every so often someone in
an office not familiar with the records there, fools the urge for a housecleaning and throws away almost in-
valuable records and this almost invariably happens in change of administration. A new City Engineer or
a new Water Superintendent coming into an office and finding a lot of papers that are and always will be
meaningless to him, thrown them away rather than have them clutter up his office. As a consequence every Cit.
that I have ever found finds itself without the proper records of important work done. The City of Port Town
sand is particularly unfortunate in that it has not a proper place to keep valuable records, so we are only
too glad to keep them in our custody for at least a year or so anyway, with the understanding that any or all
of it is subject to call by the City at no expense other than perhaps shipping it up there.
We have ordered a negative of the tracings filed with the General Land office as a precaution in
cane the original should be lost in the mail or blueprints should be required by you later on. The blueprint
of the filing maps and the blueprints of the profiles were ordered from the Portland Blueprint Co. We have
Okayed their bill and asked them to forward it to you.
Wishing you a Very Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year, we are
JOB/EC Very truly yours,
.. BAAR AND CUNNINGHAM,
BY J. 0. SAAR
Said matters were all ordered filed.
