Organization Name Chimacum Music & Dance
Primary Contact Kelsey Nelsen

Email chimacummusicanddance@gmail.com
Project or Event Name First Fridays Community Dances
Event Location Chimacum Grange
Date(s) of Event February 2, 2023, March 1, 2023
Amount Requested $1000
Admission Charge Suggested Donation $10-$30 (No one turned away for lack of funds)
Donations Accepted? Yes
Is there at least one free or "pay what you wish" performance? Yes
Total Budget? $2096
Please attach the proposed budget for this event chimcaum_music_and_dance_2024_budget.pdf
Has the venue for the event(s) been assessed as ADA accessible? Yes
If yes, please attach a copy of the assessment report or complete the Venue Accessibility
Statement below.
Venue Accessibility Statement
Park near venue in a handicapped parking space?
Enter the building without assistance? (i.e. no stairs or barriers to entry, door(s) able to be
opened with closed fist and not too heavily weighted)
Enjoy and participate in the event as fully as a temporarily able-bodied person? (i.e.,
wheelchair seating, elevator or lift if more than one floor)
Are the restroom facilities accessible? (i.e., toilet at least 17" high, grab bars)
Describe how your project will benefit and consider the diverse population of the greater Port
Townsend community:
We're excited to bring inter-generational community dancing back to Chimacum. Out goal is to
have a variety of types of accessible community dances that don't require bringing a partner to
participate - square, Cajun, swing, contra and more - with a different traditional dance style each
month. There will be an introductory lesson at the beginning of each dance so beginners are
welcome. Our hope is that rotating styles will reach the most diverse group of dancers and
encourage them to try new styles, broadening community connection overall.
Explain how the City’s funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City
funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project:
First and foremost we want to pay musicians a fair wage without limiting accessibility by charging
a higher ticket price. With the city's funding we'll be able to do that, market the events effectively,
and give some additional money from ticket sales back to support the Grange. The events could
be produced without the city's funding but the quality and scope would be greatly diminished,
relying on musicians who are willing to volunteer to play and no marketing budget. We are asking
for financial support for the February and March scheduled dances.
Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event
is designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors:
We'll mainly target locals with posters, KPTZ, and social media marketing, but we will also spread
the word to regional dance communities in Seattle, Tacoma, Olympia, Bellingham, and Port
Angeles. With this additional funding, we hope to hire musicians that are beloved and will draw
from the wider region. Indoor dances can be a popular destination event in the colder wetter
months.
If this event has received Arts Commission funding in the past, please explain any proposed
changes to the event and any change in the requested funding amount. N/A

Venue (Fort Worden JFK Building) is an historic building with front steps; barrier-free ADA ramp
access has been retrofitted to create an accessible side entrance. Restrooms are barrier-free on
same level as performance space. ADA parking is available outside the venue.
Describe how your project will benefit and take into consideration the diverse population of the
greater Port Townsend community:
As a relatively new community-based theatre company, our core mission is to offer
opportunities for local non-professional actors, designers and directors to create meaningful,
relevant, and engaging live theatre for local audiences.
Our young company has now held three highly successful productions; the most recent two
supported in part by PTAC grant funding:
As You Like It - August 2022 Cast ranged in age from 16 to 72; over 30 Jefferson County
actors, designers and volunteers were directly involved in the production. Entire cast and
production team were locals (one actor commuted from Bainbridge).
Saltfire Theatre PTAC Grant 1
December 2023
All In the Timing -May 2023 Made possible in part by a grant from PTAC this production
further broadened our local audience appeal, with a contemporary ensemble cast play
performed in an intimate setting, as a contrast to our large summer outdoor Shakespeare
productions. The cast all Jefferson County residents - also had a broad age range (13-72),
and eight of the 18 people in the cast and technical team were under 30, a demographic
rarely well-represented in Port Townsend arts activities. All shows sold out with standing-
room crowds for this highly acclaimed production.
Taming of the Shrew August 2023 This was our most ambitious show yet, with a cast of 20
local actors (ages 13-73, half of them under 30), and over 15 other local designers,
technicians and volunteers involved in creating the show. The production was struck by
tragedy when our original director, Consuelo Aduviso Brennan, suffered a catastrophic
stroke in July, and passing away in early August, just after the show opened. Wanting to
honor Consuelos vision and her lifelong commitment to arts education, particularly her
work with children and teens, we went ahead with the production, dedicating the show to
her each night.
Our planned production of Shakespeares Twelfth Night brings the spark of live theatre into the
deep darkness of January a time normally underserved by local and regional entertainment.
Our use of the historic JFK Building at Fort Worden is the result of a collaborative partnership
with Fort Worden Hospitality, deepening their commitment to local community engagement.
The venue is small, and the production will be performed in the round with the actors up close
to the audience, creating a very connected, personal experience of the play.
For all three previous productions, Saltfire has been able to provide cast, crew and designers
with modest stipend payments out of the proceeds from ticket sales after expenses are paid.
Our goal is to be able to do this again, as part of recognizing the contributions of the working
artists that create community theatre.
funding will support the project. If the project can still be done without City
funding, show how the requested funds will improve the project:
Receiving funding from the Port Townsend Arts Commission will enable Saltfire to cover venue
rental for the production of Twelfth Night. Small theater companies often suffer from cash flow
issues early on in the production process, with revenue not coming till the last third with ticket
sales from performances.
We have worked hard to make theater more affordable and accessible to local audiences, and
for an intimate-setting show with a small hall (60), production costs are higher relative to ticket
revenues than for larger-venue outdoor productions. Receiving this grant from PTAC will allow
us to finish this January
our planned Spring and Summer 2024 productions, and not end in the hole coming out of
Twelfth Night. Receiving funding also allows us more flexibility in choosing contemporary shows
for future productions which need royalty payments up front, letting us reach local audiences
wanting a wider range of theatrical experiences.
Saltfire Theatre PTAC Grant 2
December 2023
Explain how the project will either target Port Townsend/East Jefferson residents or, if the event is
designed to bring in visitors from the area, how you will advertise to those visitors?
The project audience will be primarily Port Townsend & East Jefferson County Residents.
Marketing and outreach will be local, using local community outreach resources such as
newsletters, FaceBook, community bulletin boards and the BareBoards calendar email lists. Fort
Worden Hospitality will also be promoting the event to their guests, expanding our visibility to
visitors to the area.
Saltfire has received two PTAC grants previously: the first in March 2023, which helped fund our
May 2023 production of All In the Timing, and the second in June 2023, which contributed to
our August 2023 production of Taming of the Shrew. As a new local arts organization (we just
celebrated our first year as a legal entity!), early grant funding support for a new organization
helps us continue to survive and thrive as we grow and expand our offerings.

protected from discrimination "in the enjoyment of any right, privilege, advantage, or

arts events funded (wholly or in part) through the Port Townsend Arts Commission, any
event receiving funding must be held in an accessible venue, and accessibility and any
inaccessible aspects of a venue be noted in the publicity for each event.

well as from others active in the arts. Nominations could emphasize either work done in
2022-2023 or long-term accomplishments. Since numerous deserving nominees from
past Angel of the Arts searches continue to work with little recognition, the PTAC
encourages their re-nomination (Angels honored in past years are not eligible for
