Attendance 37 Location: Children's Room Sponsored By: Friends Description: Join us for a special storytime celebrating Lunar New Year! Children's book author Lily LaMotte will be reading her new picture book Chloe's Lunar New Year. This delightful picture book introduces children to the Taiwanese tradition of reunion dinner on Lunar New Year's Eve. Activities and snacks will be provided following storytime. Families will have the opportunity to enter a raffle and win a signed copy of Chloe's Lunar New Year. Comments: Our Lunar New Year Storytime was a joyful and heartwarming event. Lily LaMotte and her husband Lucien were incredibly generous with their energy and time. Lily helped to plan out activities and snacks, and Lucien played traditional Taiwanese songs on his guitar throughout the event. Additionally, Lily waived her honorarium, allowing us to purchase 5 copies of her picture a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library January 2023 Monthly Program Report book which we gave out during the event. It was beautiful watching our community come together, learning, and celebrating Taiwanese traditions for the Lunar New Year. The room was full of movement and energy, so it was especially moving to see how attentively everyone listened when Lily sat down to read Chloe's Lunar New Year and Lucien played music on his guitar. We decorated the Children's Room with red paper lanterns, and Paige created beautiful decorations featuring yellow apricot blossoms and mandarin oranges. Our Teen Volunteer, Piper, spent several hours helping to cut these out and adding ribbon so that we could hang them on our tree. I'm so grateful that I was able to be a part of this event and I hope to make it an annual tradition. I also greatly appreciated the generosity of Michelle Lee, the illustrator of Chloe's Lunar New Year, for allowing us to use her illustrations for our marketing materials and the craft. We were able to print out decorative coloring pages that featured Lee's illustrations, and families enjoyed drawing and coloring together during the event. "In Every Little Thing: Small Breakthroughs, Big Mistakes, Endless Lessons, Sanelli proves that a narrative essay can be wise and vulnerable and nail what matters most in our lives, all in the same breath. No one tells -truth with more heart, humor, and accountability. With a voice that speaks of life as it is everyday lived—with joy, calm, worry, and alarm—Sanelli manages to write lyrically in warm, accessible language. One can learn so much from a writer who, wherever she goes she takes her readers along with her, her experiences becoming theirs, as well. These writings will make you miss the Northwest even if you've never been there. Gliding on sentences smooth as stone with the brightness of the author's enthusiasm, this book will delight, challenge, reassure, and steer any reader toward a higher capacity to expand life's smallest moments into our arandest triumbhs. Monique Gray Smith's loving young adult adaption of Robin Wall Kimmerer's Braiding Sweetgrass helped bring comfort, joy, hope, gratitude, kindness, connections, and new uplifting perspectives for our community which was needed after three years of being in a pandemic. The library received excellent press coverage and plentiful comments of deep appreciation from the community for a book for teens that also spoke to adults. Offering books that appealed to kids, teens, and adults helped bring everyone together. Monique Gray Smith presented to schools and many students were able to read the books. The students deeply connected with her and we consider her talks to be the most successful we have had at the schools in recent memory. The library was able to partner with the Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe and offer a special meet and great for tribal elders and at the Dungeness River Nature Center. Many copies of the book were also given to Jamestown S'Klallam Tribe to be shared with teens through the tribal library. This was our first year to have the Meet the Author talk at the Northwest Maritime Center and the venue was perfect. The Port Gamble Tribe came and gave Monique's talk a special blessing and welcome that Monique said was, "good medicine." With over 1330 attendees the program had more attendance than some past in person Community Reads, which is incredibly gratifying. This year we had nearly 1000 books circulating through the community as well. Having a special PTFF Indigenous animation film screening at The Rose Theatre, community based art in the library with Northwind Art, and a permanent StoryWalk all added to wonderful in person programs. This program was such a success thanks to the Friends of the Library and Library Foundation! a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library March 2023 Monthly Program Report Drawing from her experiences as an Indigenous scientist, botanist Robin Wall Kimmerer demonstrated how all living things --from strawberries and witch hazel to water lilies and lichen --provide us with gifts and lessons every day in her best-selling book Braiding Sweetgrass. Adapted for young adults by Monique Gray Smith, this new edition reinforces how wider ecological understanding stems from listening to the earth's oldest teachers: the plants around us. With informative sidebars, reflection questions, and art from illustrator Nicole Neidhardt, Braiding Sweetgrass for Young Adults brings Indigenous wisdom, scientific knowledge, and the lessons of plant life to a new generation. Monique Gray Smith is an award winning, bestselling author, and professional consultant. She has written eight books including Speaking our Truth: A Journey of Reconciliation, My Heart Fills with Happiness, You Hold Me Up, Lucy and Lola, Tilly: A Story of Hope and Resilience, and When We Are Kind. Monique's most recent novel, Tilly and the Crazy Eights, was long listed for Canada Reads 2021. Monique is Cree, Lakota, and Scottish. She lives in British Columbia, Canada, with her teenage twins. Robin Wall Kimmerer is a mother, scientist, decorated professor, and enrolled member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation. Her first book, Gathering Moss, was awarded the John Burroughs Medal for outstanding nature writing. Her writings have appeared in Orion, Whole Terrain, and numerous scientific journals. She lives in Syracuse, New York, where she is a SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor of Environmental Biology and the founder and director of the Center for Native Peoples and the Environment. Nicole Neidhardt is a Dine (Navajo) artist of Kiiyaa'aanii clan. She received her MFA from OCAD University in Toronto, Ontario, and a bachelor of fine arts with a business minor from the University of Victoria. She is the cofounder of the Innovative Young Indigenous Leaders Symposium, alongside Gina Mowatt, and is the cofounder of Groundswell Climate Collective, a group that is fighting the climate crisis through resiliency and artwork. The celebration emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Dia is a nationally recognized initiative that emphasizes the importance of literacy for all children from all backgrounds. It is a daily commitment to linking children and their families to diverse books, languages and cultures. The common goals of all Dia programming are to: • Celebrate children and connect them to the world of learning through books, stories and libraries. • Nurture cognitive and literacy development in ways that honor and embrace a child's home language and culture. • Introduce families to community resources that provide opportunities for learning through multiple literacies. • Recognize and respect culture, heritage and language as powerful tools for strengthening families and communities. Comments: I want to begin by expressing my gratitude to all the staff members at JCIRA. Natalia, Libby, and Miriam all played an essential role in helping to create this program and turn it into such a joyous event. I feel incredibly privileged to have been a part of this event, and I look forward to partnering with JCIRA again in the future. The event started out with opportunities for community members to connect and tour the new JCIRA Multicultural Center. There were snacks and activities for kids and families including facepainting and letter writing. The second part of the event was structured after a library story. Natalia talked about the importance of coming together and honoring the different identities and cultures found in our community and the role literacy plays in this process. I led us through our welcome song, and taught some basic ASL signs including "hello," "friend," "time" and "say." We talked about how the song incorporated two separated languages: English and ASL. Then Natalia and I read Book Fiesta!: Celebrate Children's Day/Book Day, Celebremos EI dia de los ninos/EI dia de los libros by Pat Mora in Spanish and English. After that various community members took turns reading in different languages. A mom and her son read together with the son reading in Japanese and the mom translating to English. One of my favorite moments was the 86 year old grandmother who read a story about the Chinese zodiacs in Chinese and asked me to read the English translation. She started a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library April 2023 Monthly Program Report out by telling the children more about culture and talked about the importance of reading together. We also built in time for singing and music. Natalia wrote a Spanish translation of "You Are My Sunshine" and sang it with her daughter and Libby. We also passed out egg shakers and Natalia played the guitar. All in all, this was a wonderful and impactful event. I look forward to doing it again next year! Emily worked closely with Joy Wentzel to identify forms of outreach that would have the highest level of impact at each school. Outreach included school assemblies, class visits, field trips to the library. Emily attended two school assemblies at Salish Coast Elementary, reaching over 500 students. During these school assemblies she shared a short video featuring footage of students answering questions about the library. Students responded to the following questions "What do you like most about the library?" "What are some of your favorite books?" "What are you most excited for this Summer?" Students enjoyed seeing their classmates featured in the video, and were very excited to hear about upcoming programs at the library. Additionally, over the course of a week, Emily reached over 300 students through class visits at Blue Herron Middle School. She also met with students participating in the OCEAN program. Finally, she coordinated with Joy Wentzel and Virginia Grace in organizing a field trip and tour of the public library for 5 classes of high school students. Over a 150 high schoolers enjoyed hearing about upcoming teen programs and learning about new areas of the collection including Nintendo Switch games, comic books, and the Unusual Items Collection. Corky Parker will lead a book reading and discussion in person, about her book La Finca; which is the 2022 Nancy Pearl Award Winner for Memoir. "La Finca is the story of my inn, on Puerto Rico's Vieques Island, a special little corner of the world, and how much it taught me over 20 -odd Years. " a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library May 2023 Monthly Program Report Corky Parker will discuss her experiences as an author, her life in Puerto Rico, the line between artist and author, and following your dreams. Corky Parker grew up in Northern California; Sonoma County and Berkeley in the 60's. And although she never went to a traditional high school, she was given a scholarship to Bennington College, where she studied environmental economics and served on its Board of Trustees after graduating in 1977. For much of Parker's career she was creative director for a small creative team she started in Seattle, writing and designing environmental public awareness and corporate marketing films. In 1996 she started La Finca Caribe, an offbeat, "eco -inn" on Puerto Rico's Vieques Island, which she and her family ran for nearly 25 years. Around that She has also been on air public radio announcer, helping KSKA, the public radio station in Anchorage, Done corporate sustainability work in the online retail world, had a small gelato shop in Fremont and owned a small organic sheep farm on Marrowstone. But, Writing and creative design has been integrated into all of her work, which (whether in film, corporate carbon footprint reduction programs or eco -hospitality) has received accolades in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Seattle Times, Outside, Lonely Planet, Gourmet and China's People's Daily, and won various national and international awards. her website is corkyparker.com Her book, La Finca is a lively graphic memoir about a woman creating a new life amid countless challenges, including hurricanes that led her to reconsider everything. It is a story about trusting oneself, self-discovery, accepting disappointment and loss, and falling in love with a place. At age forty, Parker surrendered to her Swept Away meets Swiss Family Robinson fantasy of running an inn far from her home on Vashon Island . For the next twenty -plus years Corky lived out her dreams of running La Finca Caribe, — an eco -lodge in Vieques, Puerto Rico. What started as a rough-and-tumble dream grew into a destination enjoyed by guests from around the world. a 4'a7r dirumura "" Port Townsend Public Library May 2023 Monthly Program Report Sketchbook in hand, Parker chronicled her daily adventures living with the land. Daniel Deardorff's The Other Within: The Genius of Deformity in Myth, Culture and Psyche is an initiatory journey through ancient myths, wisdom literature, and personal revelation. Having survived disabling polio as an infant, Deardorff knew well the oppressions of exclusion, outsiderhood, and the betrayals endured by all who are ifothered." His book guides us to discover our own true identity and honor the "other" that lives within each of us and within society, the exiled part that carries wisdom so desperately needed for ourselves and the culture at large.
