The team traveled to the newly built Silverdale Library, a branch of Kitsap Regional Library (KRL). A KRL librarian provided a full tour of the facilities including behind the scenes. The new library is a renovated school space and demonstrates a strong collaboration between KRL and the Central Kitsap School District. Karin Peabody presented an in-depth StrengthsFinder asset based trained for staff. This provided an excellent opportunity for everyone to focus on their strengths and for the team to get to know one another better all through the lens of diversity and inclusion. The team enjoyed lunch from Monica's Waterfront Caf6- a beloved local farm to table bakery. Everyone appreciated being able to gather in person again and to see the newest library in our region. Staff comments below about their favorite parts of the day from their evaluations- • Karin's a gem • Training on StrengthsFinder with Karin • Library tour was fun and inspiring! • Karin's presentation had great content • Learning about others (teammates). Lunch was fabulous. Nice to get out of the usual digs & be together. • Learning about each person strengths and how the relate to each other, themselves, and the world. It felt like a safe place to talk about ourselves and those we work with. • The opportunity to self -reflect in community with others. • Learned a lot about other coworkers & dynamics- helpful to know others' strengths. • Fun to see everyone, talk, and connect. I was challenged to think about myself in a way I'm not use to. I /eft with my brain "full!" Always a good thing! • Both the library visit and training were great. A lot of content to think about. • The library tour. Coming away with a much richer sense and a greater appreciation of how varied, thoughtful, interesting, and complex my coworkers are. I loved that we were given language to talk about personality traits. This new book is a work of literary nonfiction about the power of letter -writing — and of expressing love and hope in the darkest times. Readers are calling it inspirational and romantic — and the best part is that it's a true love story, set in Europe and on the Olympic Peninsula. Comments- Diane has been an incredible library supporter for years with her articles about the library in the PDN. It was an honor to host an author talk for her first book. Description - Port Townsend Public Library September 2022 Monthly Program Report Five Tuesdays, 4-30-6PM, Sept 27 -Oct 25, in person at the Port Townsend Public Library's Pink House Optional Race Amity Walk on Sunday, Oct 9 COURSE DESCRIPTION Race Amity is a vitally important idea for America's future. The five- part class keys off the documentary project, "An American Story: Race Amity and The Other Tradition." It seeks to move the public discourse on race from the "blame/grievance/rejection" cycle to a view from a different lens, the lens of "amity/collaboration/access and equity." The moral counterweight of friendship and collaboration, which have always been present in our history, represents "the other tradition." After a half-hour video episode, we will hear relevant local stories of people overcoming racial prejudice through association, amity, and collaboration. This "other tradition" is a source of inspiration and celebrates unknown legacies to be absorbed and emulated. Discussion follows! Let us learn from each other. Participants will also be invited to join The Race Amity Walk on the afternoon of Sunday, Oct. 9, beginning in Chetzemoka Park with community activities. Together, they form a powerful enclave of the Mexican diaspora in Point Reyes, California. With photography as their medium, the participants in this project carve a path in a community that years ago was foreign to most immigrant This film encourages the viewer to think about questions like: How can we use art to challenge equalities? How do the arts facilitate the integration of different groups? How are public spaces and projects accessed by immigrants or other underrepresented groups? The work created by the photographers offers an intimate glimpse into their lives. Stories about their families, jobs, and experiences on the ranches come into focus and encourage the larger community to come together and share food, music, and dance at traditional celebrations of Latinx culture. We read seasonal stories around gratitude during our weekly storytimes, and families helped to decorate our gratitude tree in the Children's Room. Community members wrote down messages of gratitude and thanks on colorful leaves and hung them up on the tree. We saw a wide range of responses from "electricity," to "food." One child wrote: "school and getting to pretend to drive the car." Many community members wrote that they were thankful for family and friends.
