Month in Review: Continued Reopening
April saw an increase in the library’s slow and safe reopening. Library in-person hours
expanded to Tuesdays- Saturdays 10am-5pm and welcomed up to 20 visitors for up to 20-
minute grab-and-go visits. The gratitude from patrons for being able to come back in the
library and browse has been so very joyful.
The library is committed to being anti-racist and promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion
(EDI) and has had some continuing education opportunities for staff this month. Melody
attended a workshop for Washington libraries titled The Journey to Becoming an Anti-Racist
Organization and Keith and Hilary started a Library Journal course on equity, diversity, and
inclusion for library collections.

Live streamed performance, followed by commentary and Q & A.
Prim and proper Emma Smith DeVoe and outrageous, flamboyant
May Arkwright Hutton worked side by side -- but seldom eye to eye
-- to win the vote for women in Washington State in 1910.
Suddenly May is gone, and Emma can’t get her out of her mind!
On Thursday, April 15th the Port Townsend and Jefferson County
Libraries will present May’s Vote, a play by Toni Douglass about
the two women who led the campaign that won the vote for women
in Washington in November 1910. The program is being presented
in honor of that anniversary and of the 2020 centennial of the 19th
Amendment.
Join us online for this play about these two fascinating women from
Washington’s past. The actors will give a brief live introduction

Commission and the Washington State Historical Society through
the Votes for Women Centennial Grant Program.

Monthly Program Report
Month in Review
May is a slow program month as the school year winds down and staff prepare for
Summer Reading. Good news is the library will host in-person outside storytimes this
summer. Our first in-person programs since March 2020. We are hoping to resume
adult programs in- person in the fall.
Reopening
The Carnegie Reading Room reopened as well as computer use. Up to 30 people
were invited in the library for 30-minute visits. Patrons have appreciated the longer
browsing time, access to public computers, and being in the beautiful Carnegie Room
again.
Mill Series
The successful series concluded with an artist talk on May 27th via Zoom. This
collaboration has set an exciting precedent for future collaborative programing.

Dana Weir from Swan School for a talk about their art installations
and student art for the Paper Mill Art Installation as part of the
series The Port Townsend Paper Mill – Past, Present, and
Future. A question and answer period will follow the artists’ talks.
Comments:
An excellent artists’ talk that will be posted online. JCHS and the
library noticed that as the weather gets nicer and the State opens
more that Zoom program attendance is lowering.
