November 2020 Monthly Program Report
Month in Review
The show must go on is the theme of this year’s Community Read. Author John Larison’s talk
was rescheduled from March to November in hopes that we could meet in person. We
quickly pivoted to an online program with him and Adrienne Harun in conversation. The
program was a wonderful success with over 75 attendees and received fantastic praise.
Special kudos to Keith Darrock for planning such an incredible program this year. City
Manager John Mauro introduced the authors and shared his own love of the book. The 15th
annual Community Read Whisky When We’re Dry finished on a high note for 2020. The
program was recorded and is available on the Library’s Community Read webpage. At the
conclusion of the program the 2021 Community Read was announced, House Lessons:
Renovating a Life by renowned local author Erica Bauermeister. It will be all online as well and
a wonderful celebration of families, home, and Port Townsend history.

“A thunderclap of
originality, here is a fresh
voice and fresh take on
one of the oldest stories we tell about ourselves as Americans and
Westerners. It’s riveting in all the right ways – a damn good read
that stayed with me long after closing the covers.”
— Timothy Egan, New York Times bestselling author of The Worst
Hard Time
In the spring of 1885, finding herself alone, seventeen-year-
old Jessilyn Harney sets out to find her runaway brother, Noah. But
it’s dangerous to be a young woman travelling in the West. Without
options, she cuts off her hair, binds her chest, saddles her beloved
mare, Ingrid, and sets off across the mountains. Written
in Larison’s lush prose that brings the wild landscape to life,
Whiskey When We’re Dry is a brutal, heartbreaking tale of bravery,
loss, and identity in the American West.
Growing up, Jessilyn learned sharpshooting from her father. Now
known as Jesse, her skills catch the eye of the territory’s violent,
capricious Governor, who offers her employment. But Noah is now

an outlaw, and the very men Jesse travels with are trying to hunt
him down. The journey is long, bitter, and violent, and Jess finds
herself committing acts that take her further and further away from
the girl she
once was.
Told in Jess’s unforgettable voice, Whiskey When We’re Dry is an
epic as expansive as America itself—and weaves together the
complex web of stories and characters that contributed to its
formation.

December 2020 Monthly Program Report
Month in Review
December was a month focused on wellbeing. The Library and City Staff attended a Self-Care
and Compassion Fatigue training from Karin Peabody. Then, the Library offered an
Introduction to Mindfulness with Ellen Falconer. This past year has been stressful for a
myriad of reasons and the Library wanted to offer tools to help our staff and community
manage stress and focus on wellbeing. The training and programs were both incredibly well
received, and we will look at bringing them back in 2021. Both books pictured below have
been added to the collection as well as the “Poetry of Presence” mentioned in the
Mindfulness training. Cheers to health and wellness in 2021!
