September 2020 Monthly Program Report
Month in Review
September was a month of community engagement to support the Library’s strategic
planning process. The Library Strategic Plan is featured as one of the ten initiatives in the
City’s new Engage PT- an exciting initiative to encourage greater participation from the
community in City government. A library survey was available online and in paper, a flyer for
the survey was mailed out to early 5,000 households via the City’s Utility Newsletter, Melody
joined John Mauro’s Brewocracy program to talk
about the Library’s efforts to be responsive now and
to plan for the future. The Library held a Public
Visioning Workshop and had over 25 attendees give
feedback in an interactive Zoom meeting. Pictured
below is a snapshot from the dynamic visioning
workshop and pictured to the right is City Manager
John Mauro helping with Library Curbside with Kathi
Johnson and Shilah Gould in September.

Month in Review
October was an exciting month for the Library to explore creative outdoor
programming and engagement activities. The chalk kits provided a fun and safe way
for kids and families to envision their dreams for the future of Port Townsend and
offered a way for kids to get involved with Engage PT. Even though the day of the
Chalk event was rainy and windy many families
came out to share their creativity and messages of
hope, love, and democracy as pictured below. The
third Storywalk provided a great day to walk a trail
and read Ada Twist: Scientist.
The Governor issued updated guidance for Library
services under the Safe Start Plan that allowed
libraries to offer limited in- person library services.
The staff immediately began to plan in
collaboration with Jefferson County Library and
CLEO partners how to slowly and safely reopen.
Libraries through the Olympic Peninsula are looking towards the middle of November
for limited in-person services and reopening the buildings.

The show must go on is the theme of this year’s Community Read. Author John Larison’s talk
was rescheduled from March to November in hopes that we could meet in person. We
quickly pivoted to an online program with him and Adrienne Harun in conversation. The
program was a wonderful success with over 75 attendees and received fantastic praise.
Special kudos to Keith Darrock for planning such an incredible program this year. City
Manager John Mauro introduced the authors and shared his own love of the book. The 15th
annual Community Read Whisky When We’re Dry finished on a high note for 2020. The
program was recorded and is available on the Library’s Community Read webpage. At the
conclusion of the program the 2021 Community Read was announced, House Lessons:
Renovating a Life by renowned local author Erica Bauermeister. It will be all online as well and
a wonderful celebration of families, home, and Port Townsend history.

“A thunderclap of
originality, here is a fresh
voice and fresh take on
one of the oldest stories we tell about ourselves as Americans and
Westerners. It’s riveting in all the right ways – a damn good read
that stayed with me long after closing the covers.”
— Timothy Egan, New York Times bestselling author of The Worst
Hard Time
In the spring of 1885, finding herself alone, seventeen-year-
old Jessilyn Harney sets out to find her runaway brother, Noah. But
it’s dangerous to be a young woman travelling in the West. Without
options, she cuts off her hair, binds her chest, saddles her beloved
mare, Ingrid, and sets off across the mountains. Written
in Larison’s lush prose that brings the wild landscape to life,
Whiskey When We’re Dry is a brutal, heartbreaking tale of bravery,
loss, and identity in the American West.
Growing up, Jessilyn learned sharpshooting from her father. Now
known as Jesse, her skills catch the eye of the territory’s violent,
capricious Governor, who offers her employment. But Noah is now

an outlaw, and the very men Jesse travels with are trying to hunt
him down. The journey is long, bitter, and violent, and Jess finds
herself committing acts that take her further and further away from
the girl she
once was.
Told in Jess’s unforgettable voice, Whiskey When We’re Dry is an
epic as expansive as America itself—and weaves together the
complex web of stories and characters that contributed to its
formation.
