March 2020 Monthly Program Report
March Monthly Programs
Month in Review
The following letter sent by Library Director Melody Sky Eisler best sums up March 2020. As COVID-19
brought about closures and cancelations and a postponement of the Community Read.
Mar 12, 2020
Dear Library Patrons,
With heavy hearts, we announce the Port Townsend Public Library’s Community Read events will be
rescheduled for Fall 2020. We are rescheduling in the best interest of public health and the safety and
wellbeing of our library staff, volunteers, authors, and community. We carefully made this decision
through the guidance and recommendations of the State and local health departments. We are so
thankful to author John Larison’s flexibility. The good news is that this gives our community more
time to read Whiskey When We Are Dry as all the copies flew off the shelf. During this time, we could
all use good stories and Larison has woven an elaborate Western. In the meantime, please do visit
Northwind Arts Center this month to see the Community Read art exhibit “Just Passing
Through” https://northwindarts.org/event/just-passing-through/
Also, our Friends of the Library are canceling their March 21st Book Sale and look forward to a
wonderful Book Sale in June. Please consider supporting them online as their sales fund the majority
of our Library programs https://www.friendsofptlibrary.org/
As a gathering place for our community, we are monitoring the ongoing coronavirus situation and the
updates from public health officials closely. The health and safety of all patrons, staff, volunteers, and
community is of the utmost importance. The City is following multiple sources of up-to-date health
information, including the Centers for Disease Control, Washington State Department of Health, and
Jefferson County Public Health. We are also working closely with the Jefferson County Library, public
libraries across the state, and the Washington State Library.
City of Port Townsend’s COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Update
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention COVID-19 information
Jefferson Public Health COVID-19 information
The City and its Library are following the guidance of public health officials and staying open for our
regular business hours. During a time of worry and stress, the City Library hopes to be a place of
respite, solace, and safe connections for the community. The City and all its departments to have a
tiered plan in place to address the rapidly changing environment of the COVID-19 virus.
How the Library is adapting during the COVID-19 outbreak:

About the Book
“A thunderclap of originality, here is a fresh voice and fresh take on one of the oldest stories we tell
about ourselves as Americans and Westerners. It’s riveting in all the right ways – a damn good read
Port Townsend Public Library
March 2020 Monthly Program Report
that stayed with me long after closing the covers.”
— Timothy Egan, New York Times bestselling author of The Worst Hard Time
In the spring of 1885, finding herself alone, seventeen-year-old Jessilyn Harney sets out to find her
runaway brother, Noah. But it’s dangerous to be a young woman travelling in the West. Without
options, she cuts off her hair, binds her chest, saddles her beloved mare, Ingrid, and sets off across
the mountains. Written in Larison’s lush prose that brings the wild landscape to life, Whiskey When
We’re Dry is a brutal, heartbreaking tale of bravery, loss, and identity in the American West.
Growing up, Jessilyn learned sharpshooting from her father. Now known as Jesse, her skills catch the
eye of the territory’s violent, capricious Governor, who offers her employment. But Noah is now an
outlaw, and the very men Jesse travels with are trying to hunt him down. The journey is long, bitter,
and violent, and Jess finds herself committing acts that take her further and further away from the girl
she
once was.
Told in Jess’s unforgettable voice, Whiskey When We’re Dry is an epic as expansive as America itself—
and weaves together the complex web of stories and characters that contributed to its formation.

April Monthly Programs
Month in Review
April was a month of rapid adaption and innovation as the PT librarians rapidly shifted
how services were delivered in the midst of the building being closed due to COVID-
19. In April the Library shifted programs to be offered online from storytimes, crafting
session, tech help, virtual hosting of book clubs, and author talks. Digital services
were heavily promoted and added to such as adding an option to sign up for a library
card online and adding a three-month free trial of Flipster a digital magazine service.
Staff began working at home and the librarians ran the Library from home answering
reference questions via phone and email Mondays-Fridays from 10am-5pm.
The City took proactive measures given financial forecasts and furloughed all City
part-time including all the part-time Library staff. That meant that Melody, Keith and
Hilary provided virtual Library services from April to mid-June.
With book returns suspend the Department of Emergency Management asked the
CLEO Libraries to utilize the closed book drops as community mask donations. So,
the Food Co-op book drop and the Friends donation drop became part of the mask
program. It has been a successful program for the community.

discover the ways our spaces subliminally affect us. A personal,
accessible, and literary exploration of the psychology of
architecture, as well as a loving tribute to the connections we forge
with the homes we care for and live in, this book is designed for
anyone who’s ever fallen head over heels for a house. It is also a

deep into your heart. Discover what happens when a house has its
own lessons to teach in this moving and insightful memoir that

June 2020 Monthly Program Report
Month in Review
June was an exciting month for the Library. The Governor’s Office issued Phase 2
Guidance for Public Libraries allowing libraries to begin taking back materials and
offering curbside pickup of holds. Working closely with the Jefferson County Library,
our CLEO partner, both libraries reopened their book drops on June 15th to start
welcoming back the 24,000 items checked out county wide. Then on June 23 the
libraries started offering curbside pickup of holds. The first day at PTPL was excitingly
busy as we helped 110 patrons check out 365 items from 12pm-3pm. The patrons
have been so thankful for the services. Patrons sent thank you flowers and cards.

Amidst many shifts due to COVID-19,Hilary Verheggen and Scott Bahlmann from
Jefferson County Library planned an entirely virtual summer reading program with the
theme of “Imagine Your Story.” This year our partnership with the County Library was
even more important as we worked to provide quality programming with limited
staffing. The libraries shared in the cost for a prize t-shirt design by commissioning
local artist Faith Pray. We also shared the cost of the READSquared online Summer
Reading Platform. This allowed patrons of both
libraries to seamlessly log hours and earn prizes.
Kids, teens, and adults who logged reading were
eligible to win prizes to local bookstores and the
Food Co-op. Kids and Teens got a beautiful shirt
designed when they read 50 hours. Adults earned a
shirt for reading 100 hours. This summer the library
offered several children’s and teen programs, as
well as all ages programs for the whole family.
Although Summer Reading 2020 did not see the
same community engagement that it has in previous
years, it was a testament as to how we could shift
goals during unprecedented times and scenarios.
We could not have done it without the generous
support and work of the Friends of the Library!
THANK YOU!
