Library All Staff Day 9-26-18
Group photo of the Library Staff at the Water Treatment Facility
The library staff enjoyed their third annual day of training, team building, and learning more about their community
in September. Carol Baker lead a tour of the McCurdy Library, and then the staff explored the Northwest Maritime
Center. City Staff Michael Spears and Ian Jablonski showed the staff the Water Treatment Facility. Fort Worden
Servery was a lovely location for lunch. The day concluded with staff training at the kitchen shelter on the beach,
with opportunities for exploring nature and creative project to close out another great Staff Day. The weather was
outstanding, and it was a wonderful day to explore, connect, and be inspired.
Staff comments from the evaluations include:
“It was a lovely day, well-planned and enjoyable. Each part was successful and fun.”
“I really enjoyed our time together at the Fort. The weather was glorious! I loved touring the Martime Center and
the McCurdy Library. What a treasure!”
“Enjoyed learning about the H2O Treatment Plant. Something that effects all of us.”
“Thanks for planning such a warm, welcoming, informative all staff day!”

Book Lovers’ Café: The Night Child by Anna Quinn
Date:
1st Monday
Presenter: Melody E.
age group Adults
Attendance: 30
Location: Pink House
Sponsored by: Anna Quinn- she donated the book club kit
Description
Nora Brown teaches high school English and lives a quiet life
in Seattle with her husband and six-year-old daughter. But
one November day, moments after dismissing her class, a
girl's face appears above the students' desks -- ''a wild
numinous face with startling blue eyes, a face floating on top
of shapeless drapes of purples and blues where arms and legs
should have been. Terror rushes through Nora's body -- the
kind of raw terror you feel when there's no way out, when
every cell in your body, your entire body, is on fire -- when
you think you might die.''
This breathtaking debut novel examines the impact of traumatic childhood
experiences and the fragile line between past and present. Exquisitely nuanced and
profoundly intimate, The Night Child is a story of resilience, hope, and the capacity of
the mind, body, and spirit to save itself despite all odds.

Coverage
Anna Quinn was our special guest as well as an AAUW book club.
One attendee emailed the following praise about the program:
“I must admit. The book discussion was even better than I expected. Melody
Eisler, PT Library director, hosted the wide-ranging discussion adroitly covering
The Night Child's impact, content, and evolution over time. It was wonderful that
everyone was listened to and encouraged to ask questions. There was even some
very personal information that was shared because there was safety and
acceptance fostered during the discussion. Anna's determination to bring sexual
abuse into the light through her writing and advocacy is very important to us all,
especially in this country, at this time. We are grateful for our community, our
libraries, and book stores. Hooray for books and ideas and conversation and
learning, I say! ”

Description: Sing-A-Ling gets toddlers, preschoolers, families and the greater community into
our bodies and singing together.
Part story time, part sing-along and fully loaded with laughs, the select songs and
rhyming stories in this show combine finger play, movement, picture books,
uplifting acoustic music and an engaging, highly-interactive banter between
audience and presenter.
In this early literacy-infused program children (and their grownups) will create
original rhymes and lyrics to traditional American folk songs, raise their voices to
play with the alphabet’s many amusing sounds, and sing along to the words of
favorite children’s books.
