He reached his first major summit when he was 15 years old; he has since climbed many of the world's tallest mountains. A writer and a photographer, Leif's work has appeared in Powder, The Ski Journal, and Backcountry. Leif lives in Bellingham, Washington, and is a seasonal USFS climbing ranger on Mount Baker. Visit him online at leifwhittaker.com. City of Port Townsend Monthly Library Program Report March 2018 2018 About the Book: In 1963, the world followed the first American Mount Everest Expedition, and watched as "Big Jim" Whittaker became the first American to stand on top of the world. He returned home a hero. My Old Man and the Mountain is Leif Whittaker's engaging and humorous story of what it was like to "grow up Whittaker"―the youngest son of Jim Whittaker and Dianne Roberts, in an extended family of accomplished climbers. He shares glimpses of his upbringing and how the pressure to climb started early on. Readers learn of his first adventures with family in the Olympic Mountains and on Mount Rainier; his close, yet at times competitive, relationship with his brother Joss; his battle with a serious back injury; and his efforts to stand apart from his father's legacy. With wry honesty, he depicts being a recent college grad, still living in his parents' home, and trying to find a purpose in life―digging ditches, building houses, selling t- shirts to tourists―until a chance encounter leads to the opportunity to climb Everest, just like his father did. Leif heads to Nepal with all the excitement, irony, boredom, and trepidation that are part of high-altitude climbing. Well-known guides Dave Hahn and Melissa Arnot figure prominently in his story, as does "Big Jim." But Leif's story is not his father's story. It's a unique coming-of-age tale on the steep slopes of Everest (Tibetan name, Chomolungma) , and a climbing adventure that lights the imagination and fills an emotional human endeavor with universal meaning. "Whittaker writes as he climbs mountains, with courage, grace, and a dash of humility. The result is an utterly compelling tale of a young man who bravely tackles two great challenges-- one made of rock and ice and one made of doubts and fears. It's a great read." --Daniel James Brown, author of The Boys in the Boat Presenter: Leif Whittaker, Jim Whittaker & Dianne Roberts, Melody Sky Eisler, Janette Force, Mayor Stinson, Shelly Randal, Bev Moore, Christian Coxen, Nathan Barnes, Hilary Verheggen, Danny Milholland. Press coverage/pictures / feedback My introduction to the Meet the Author Event, captured the spirit of the most successful Community Read the library has had in the last four years. The staff have told me it is one of the best in our 13 years of planning Community Reads. From my introductory remarks on 3-29-18: This month the City of Port Townsend Public Library has encouraged our community to come together through the shared experience of reading Leif Whittaker’s wonderful memoir My Old Man and the Mountain and honored hometown heroes. When I told Leif that his book selected he was thrilled and hoped his book would help “leave no child inside” and inspire love of the wild and the library has help inspire that this year. When Leif visited the library, he made us tear up as he expressed how honored and humbled he has been to have his community reading My Old Man and the Mountain. From people sharing with us their own mountain climbing adventures to sharing how they once babysit Leif we could not have planned a better book for this year Read. Community members are still thanking the library for choosing a book that had such a wide appeal, celebrated our own hometown hero, is inspiring and above all else a great read. The library is so grateful to our amazing supporters and partners. It literally takes a village to put together the Community Read and the Friends of the Library and the Library Foundation’s generous support make this program possible. Thank you! Leif Whittaker wrote the following thank you to the library: “Wanted to say one final thanks for a wonderful visit to Port Townsend! As I mentioned in my talk, all the community support was incredibly inspiring and motivating to me. Not to mention it was just a really fun time! You are excellent at what you do. Keep up the good work.” City of Port Townsend Monthly Library Program Report March 2018 2018 Quotes from a couple of emails about the Community Read: “ …kudos on an inspiring event tonight. Every little adversity was well handled. I'm so glad I took my son; he loved the film. Jim and Dianne were charming. So were you!...” “Thanks for your leadership in selecting Leif’s book, and for helping facilitate the connection with the schools. I enjoyed the film and talk… ” Links to press coverage: Books and Beyond debut article in the Leader: http://www.ptleader.com/arts/community-read-kicks-off-feb/article_d4876f72-1bfd-11e8-b1f5- 53a4ae3a618c.html Christian Coxen in the Leader http://www.ptleader.com/arts/capturing-true-grit-in-nature/article_fe3c0d82-2706-11e8-88ed- af7ca3bc3eab.html Community Read in the PDN: http://www.peninsuladailynews.com/news/port-townsend-native-tells-of-mountain-climbing- in-memoir-chosen-as-2018-community-read/ Melody and Hilary pose with the Whittakers City of Port Townsend Monthly Library Program Report March 2018 2018 Kickoff film event 2-28-18 City of Port Townsend Monthly Library Program Report March 2018 2018 Meet the Author event at the Port Townsend High School 3-29-18 City of Port Townsend Monthly Library Program Report March 2018 2018 Courage to Climb Exbibit and Juror’s Talk at Northwind Arts Center City of Port Townsend Monthly Library Program Report March 2018 2018 Program name: Book Lovers’ Café : My Old Man and the Mountain Date: 1st Monday Presenter: Melody E.
