Description
This deeply moving and authentic debut set in 1970s Alaska is for fans of Rainbow
Rowell, Louise Erdrich, Sherman Alexie, and Benjamin Alire Saenz. Intertwining
stories of love, tragedy, wild luck, and salvation on the edge of America’s Last
Frontier introduce a writer of rare talent.
Ruth has a secret that she can’t hide forever. Dora wonders if she can ever truly
escape where she comes from, even when good luck strikes. Alyce is trying to
reconcile her desire to dance, with the life she’s always known on her family’s
fishing boat. Hank and his brothers decide it’s safer to run away than to stay
home—until one of them ends up in terrible danger.
Four very different lives are about to become entangled. This unforgettable
William C. Morris Award finalist is about people who try to save each other—and
how sometimes, when they least expect it, they succeed.

Description City library staff, PT school librarians, and Imprint Bookstore
staff all learned about Nancy’s philosophies on why people
read, and how to connect people with books they will like
based off her story quadrant: story/plot, character, setting,
language. Many staff commented on how much they learned
from the training and have started creating displays from
Nancy’s suggestions.
Nancy was so honored to be in the Carnegie that she posted
this to her Twitter account: Restored Carnegie reading room at
the Port Townsend Public Library. Happy this is the setting for
my Reader’s Advisory training this morning.

Description
Nancy Pearl is “America’s librarian.” She regularly speaks about the value of
reading at libraries and library conferences, and for literacy organizations and
community groups. Nancy can be found on KUOW in Seattle, KWGS in Tulsa,
Oklahoma, and Wisconsin Public Radio talking about books and reading. Her
monthly television show, Book Lust with Nancy Pearl, on the Seattle Channel
features interviews with authors, poets, and other literary figures.
Among her many honors are the 2011 Librarian of the Year Award from Library
Journal and the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award from the PNW Booksellers
Association. Nancy is the creator of the internationally recognized program If All
of Seattle Read the Same Book, and was the inspiration for the Archee McPhee
"Librarian Action Figure". If the library world has a rock star - Nancy Pearl is it.
Nancy is a best-selling author, librarian, literary critic, as well as a radio and
television personality, but first and foremost, she is a reader and has spent her
life promoting reading as one of the most beneficial and joyful experiences

Nancy’s talk was beloved by the community- so much so that we had to get a
bigger venue to accommodate the interest. Many patrons have thanked the
library for bringing her.

Humanities Washington
Description
It feels like not a day goes by without a story in the news that
relates to some water issue. Whether it’s lead in schools,
drought in California, or dwindling snowpack in Washington,
water scarcity is a challenge that needs our attention—now. In
this talk, participants learn about water scarcity and its effects
both globally and at local levels here in Washington State.
Participants are challenged to consider how they value water
in its different uses, and explore whether taking an ethical
approach to water issues changes how we manage and govern
water on our increasingly thirsty and crowded planet.
